Abstract

The invention relates to a substrate for use in a liquid crystal display of a CF-on-TFT structure in which a color filter is formed on the side of an array substrate in which a switching element is formed, and has an object to provide a substrate for use in a liquid crystal display, which enables simplification of a manufacturing process typified by a photolithography process and has high reliability. The substrate for use in the liquid crystal display is constructed to include external connection terminals which include first terminal electrodes electrically connected to gate bus lines led out from a plurality of pixel regions arranged on a glass substrate in a matrix form, second terminal electrodes formed of forming material of a pixel electrode and directly on the glass substrate, and electrode coupling regions for electrically connecting the first and the second terminal electrodes, and which electrically connect an external circuit and the gate bus lines.

Claims

1. A substrate for use in a liquid crystal display, comprising:

an insulating substrate cooperating with an oppositely arranged opposite substrate to hold a liquid crystal;

a display region including a plurality of pixel regions arranged on the insulating substrate in a matrix form, in each of which a switching element, a resin color filter layer, and a pixel electrode are formed in this order;

a frame region including a light shielding layer formed by laminating the resin color filter layer at an outer periphery of the display region; and

an overcoat layer made of an insulating resin material and formed between the resin color filter layer of the display region and the pixel electrode.

2. A substrate for use in a liquid crystal display, comprising:

an insulating substrate cooperating with an oppositely arranged opposite substrate to hold a liquid crystal;

a display region including a plurality of pixel regions arranged on the insulating substrate in a matrix form, in each of which a switching element, a silicon nitride film, a resin color filter layer, and a pixel electrode are formed in this order;

an overcoat layer made of an insulating resin material and formed between the resin color filter layer of the display region and the pixel electrode; and

contact holes opened over the switching element to satisfy a relation of an opening area in the resin color filter layer>

an opening area in the silicon nitride film>

an opening area in the overcoat layer.

4. A substrate for use in a liquid crystal display according to claim 2, wherein a shortest distance between an end of the contact hole and an end of the pixel region is 6 μ

m or more.

6. A substrate for use in a liquid crystal display according to claim 2, wherein a distance of a taper portion of the contact hole is 1.5 or more times as large as a film thickness of the overcoat layer or a taper angle is 45°

or less.

8. A substrate for use in a liquid crystal display according to claim 2, wherein a shortest distance between an end of the contact hole and an end of the pixel region is 2.5 or more times as large as a film thickness of the overcoat layer.

3. A substrate for use in a liquid crystal display, comprising:

an insulating substrate cooperating with an oppositely arranged opposite substrate to hold a liquid crystal;

a display region including a plurality of pixel regions arranged on the insulating substrate in a matrix form, in each of which a switching element, a silicon nitride film, a resin color filter layer, and a pixel electrode are formed in this order;

an overcoat layer made of an insulating resin material and formed between the resin color filter layer of the display region and the pixel electrode; and

contact holes opened over the switching element to satisfy a relation of an opening area in the overcoat layer>

an opening area in the resin color filter layer>

an opening area in the silicon nitride film.

5. A substrate for use in a liquid crystal display according to claim 3, wherein a shortest distance between an end of the contact hole and an end of the pixel region is 6 μ

m or more.

9. A substrate for use in a liquid crystal display according to claim 3, wherein a shortest distance between an end of the contact hole and an end of the pixel region is 2.5 or more times as large as a film thickness of the overcoat layer.

7. A substrate for use in a liquid crystal display according to claim 16, wherein a distance of a taper portion of the contact hole is 1.5 or more times as large as a film thickness of the overcoat layer or a taper angle is 45°

or less.

10. A substrate for use in a liquid crystal display, comprising:

an insulating substrate cooperating with an oppositely arranged opposite substrate to hold a liquid crystal;

a display region including a plurality of pixel regions arranged on the insulating substrate in a matrix form, in each of which a switching element, a resin color filter layer, and a pixel electrode are formed in this order; and

a frame region including a light shielding layer formed by laminating the resin color filter layer at an outer periphery of the display region and a protection film formed of the forming material of the pixel electrode and covering an upper layer of the color filter layer.

11. A substrate for use in a liquid crystal display according to claim 10, wherein the protective film is electrically connected to a common electrode arranged on the opposite substrate of the light shielding layer.

12. A substrate for use in a liquid crystal display according to claim 10, wherein the protection film is insulated from a storage capacitance wiring line forming a storage capacitance arranged at the pixel region or connected at high resistance.
