Abstract

The invention relates to a method for arranging transaction control in a device management system. A required transaction control operation is defined in a managing device for arranging transaction control of a management task for a managed device. At least one device management command is defined for the transaction control operation. The at least one device management command is transmitted to the managed device. A required transaction control operation is specified in the managed device on the basis of one or more received device management commands, and transaction control for a management task is carried out on the basis of the defined transaction control operation.

Claims

1. A data processing device for a device management system:

comprising;

device management means for defining device management commands,

means for defining a required transaction control operation for arranging transaction control of a management task for a managed device,

means for defining at least one device management command for the transaction control operation, and

means for transmitting at least one device management command to the managed device.

2. The data processing device according to claim 1, wherein the data processing device is configured to define a transaction control primitive, and

the data processing device is configured to define a corresponding at least one device management command for the transaction control primitive.

3. The data processing device according to claim 1, wherein the data processing device is configured to receive transaction control information from the managed device,

the data processing device is configured to determine if management commands associated with the management task were successfully carried out on the basis of the received transaction control information,

the data processing device is configured to define for the managed device a transaction control primitive for closing the transaction if the management commands were successfully carried out, or

the data processing device is configured to define for the managed device a transaction control primitive for returning to an initial state preceding the transaction of the management task if at least one management command was not successfully carried out.

4. The data processing device according to claim 1, wherein the data processing device is configured to address the device management command to a specific storage location in a management structure of the managed device for the transaction control operation.

5. The data processing device according to claim 1, wherein the data processing device is configured to define a specific transaction control device management command for carrying out the transaction control operation.

The data processing device according to claim 1, wherein the data processing device comprises a service management manager for issuing service management commands to the managed device and a device management manager configured to transmit the at least one device management command to the managed device, and

the data processing device is configured to specify the transaction control operation for arranging transaction control of a plurality of device management commands defined on the basis of a service management primitive or command.

7. The data processing device according to claim 6, wherein the service management manager is configured to define mapping between the transaction control operation and the at least one device management command.

8. The data processing device according to claim 1, wherein the data processing device is configured to receive transaction control information from the managed device,

the data processing device is configured to determine if initial management commands associated with the management task were successfully carried out on the basis of the received transaction control information,

the data processing device is configured to replace at least some of the initial management commands by one or more replacing commands for carrying out the management task if at least one initial management command was not successfully carried out, and

the data processing device is configured to transmit at least the replacing management commands to the managed device.

9. A data processing device for a device management system, the data processing device comprising:

a device management agent for carrying out received device management commands,

means for receiving device management commands from a managing device,

means for specifying a required transaction control operation for a management task on the basis of one or more received device management commands, and

means for carrying out a transaction control specific function on the basis of the defined transaction control operation.

10. The data processing device according to claim 9 wherein the data processing device is configured to specify a transaction control primitive on the basis of one or more received device management commands, and

the data processing device is configured to carry out a transaction control specific function on the basis of the transaction control primitive.

11. The data processing device according to claim 9, wherein the data processing device comprises a transaction control agent configured to carry out the transaction control specific function on the basis of the defined transaction control operation.

12. The data processing device according to claim 11, wherein the transaction control agent is configured to maintain a transaction log comprising entries of management commands of the management task.

13. The data processing device according to claim 9, wherein the data processing device is configured to transmit to the managing device transaction control information indicating whether one or more management commands associated with the management task were successfully carried out.

14. The data processing device according to claim 9, wherein the data processing device comprises a management structure comprising at least one node for the transaction control operation, and

the data processing device is configured to initiate the transaction control operation associated with the node in response to a device management command addressed to the node.

The data processing device according to claim 9, wherein the data processing device is configured to specify the transaction control operation corresponding to the one or more device management commands on the basis of predetermined mapping instructions specifying mapping between the at least one device management command and the transaction control operation.

16. The data processing device according to claim 9, wherein the data processing device is configured to carry out transaction control for a management task associated with a service management level deployment component.

17. The data processing device according to claim 9, wherein the management structure is OMA DM management tree and the device management commands are OMA DM management commands.

18. A method for arranging transaction control in a device management system, the method comprising:

defining a required transaction control operation for arranging transaction control of a management task for a managed device,

defining at least one device management command for the transaction control operation,

transmitting at least one device management command to the managed device,

specifying a required transaction control operation on the basis of one or more received device management commands, and

carrying out a transaction control specific function on the basis of the defined transaction control operation.

A computer program product that is downloadable into the memory of a data processing device for a service management system, the computer program product comprising a computer program code which, when executed in the processor of the data processing device, causes the data processing device to:

define a required transaction control operation for arranging transaction control of a management task for a managed device, and

define at least one device management command to be transmitted to the managed device for the transaction control operation.

20. A computer program product that is downloadable into the memory of a data processing device for a service management system, the computer program product comprising a computer program code which, when executed in the processor of the data processing device, causes the data processing device to:

specify a required transaction control operation on the basis of one or more received device management commands, and

carry out a transaction control specific function on the basis of the defined transaction control operation.

21. A hardware module for a device management system, wherein the hardware module comprises:

connecting means for connecting the hardware module to a device for the device management system,

means for defining a required transaction control operation for arranging transaction control of a management task for a managed device, and

means for defining at least one device management command to be transmitted to the managed device for the transaction control operation.

22. A hardware module for a device management system, wherein the hardware module comprises:

connecting means for connecting the hardware module to a device for the device management system,

means for specifying a required transaction control operation on the basis of one or more received device management commands, and

means for carrying out a transaction control specific function on the basis of the defined transaction control operation.
