Abstract

A switch device is provided that selectively enables the utility of a processing device. In one example, the processing device is a microprocessor operating in a target device, such as a computer system, and the switch device is a radio frequency controller device that sets the switch responsive to an RF signal. The processing device only operates when: 1) the processing device is installed in the expected target device; and 2) the switch has been activated, for example, using the RF signal. The radio frequency controller device has a switch that is set to a defined state responsive to the RF signal. Conditional logic circuitry may use the RF signal to determine if the switch should be activated, and sets the state of the switch accordingly. The radio frequency controller device operates a data processing process only when the switch is activated. A processing device sends data to the radio frequency controller device, and if the switch is active, the processing device receives modified data in response. The processing device also generates expected data, and compares the expected data to the modified data. If the expected data matches the modified data, then the processing device is allowed to operate.

Claims

1. An RF controlled target, comprising:

a radio frequency controller device, further comprising;

a switch configured to selectively activate data processing logic, the data processing logic having a data input line and a processed data output line;

a demodulator/modulator connected to the switch;

an antenna connected to the demodulator/modulator; and

wherein the switch activates the data processing logic responsive to receiving an RF signal; and

a processor operating the steps comprising;

sending data to the data input line;

generating expected data using the sent data;

receiving modified data from the data output line;

comparing the modified data to the expected data; and

operating the processor responsive to the comparison.

2. The RF controlled target according to claim 1, wherein operating the processor comprises activating the processor'"'"'s full functionality when the modified data matches the expected data.

3. The RF controlled target according to claim 1, wherein operating the processor comprises activating less than the processor'"'"'s fill functionality when the modified data does not match the expected data.

4. The RF controlled target according to claim 1, wherein operating the processor comprises not activating any of the processor'"'"'s functionality when the modified data does not match the expected data.

5. The RF controlled target according to claim 1, wherein the data processing logic and the step of generating expected data cooperate to implement a symmetrical encryption process.

6. The RF controlled target according to claim 1, wherein the data processing logic and the step of generating expected data cooperate to implement a asymmetrical encryption process.

7. The RF controlled target according to claim 1, further including conditional circuitry operatively connected to the switch.

8. The RF controlled target according to claim 1, wherein the radio frequency controller device is constructed as an integrated circuit DIP, a surface mount package, or packaged as a silicon die.

9. The RF controlled target according to claim 1, wherein the switch is a change effecting device, and the change effecting device is a memory value, an electronic switch, an electrical switch, a mechanical switch, a fuse, an electromechanical device, a chemical change, a electro-optical filter, on optical emitter, an audible emitter, an EM emitter, or a power controller.

10. The RF controlled target according to claim 1, further comprising a memory storing a key for use by the conditional circuitry;

11. The RF controlled target according to claim 1, wherein the conditional circuitry is a logic circuit, a processor, a microprocessor, a microcontroller, or a comparison circuit.

12. The RF controlled target according to claim 1, wherein the processor is a microprocessor, microcontroller, digital signal processor, or embedded controller.

13. The RF controlled target according to claim 1, wherein the processor and the radio frequency controller device are installed in the target.

14. The RF controlled target according to claim 1, wherein the processor and the switch are installed in the target, and the antenna is external to the target.

15. A method for controlling a target, comprising:

activating a switch in the target responsive to receiving an RF signal;

operating a data processing process only if the switch is activated;

sending data from a device in the target to the data processing process;

generating, at the device, expected data;

receiving modified data from the data processing process;

comparing the modified data to the expected data; and

operating the device according to the comparison.

16. The method according to claim 15, wherein the activating step permanently sets the switch to the activate state.

17. The method according to claim 15, wherein the data processing process cooperates with the generating step to implement a symmetrical encryption process.

18. The method according to claim 15, wherein the data processing process cooperates with the generating step to implement an asymmetrical encryption process.

19. The method according to claim 15, wherein the device is a microprocessor, microcontroller, digital signal processor, or embedded controller.

20. The method according to claim 15, wherein operating the device comprises activating the device'"'"'s full functionality when the modified data matches the expected data.

21. The method according to claim 15, wherein operating the device comprises activating less than the device'"'"'s full functionality when the modified data does not match the expected data.

22. The method according to claim 15, further comprising:

generating, at the device, a set of expected data;

determining if any one of the set of expected data matches the modified data; and

operating the device according to a functionality associated with the matched expected data.

23. A system for controlling a processor, comprising:

a controller device;

a processor connected to the controller device and operating the steps comprising;

sending data to a data input line of the controller device;

receiving return data from a data output line of the controller device; and

operating the processor at a functional level according to the return data.

24. The system according to claim 23, wherein the processor further operates the step of comparing the return data to expected data, and if the return data does not match the expected data, operating the processor at a functional level that restricts the operation of the processor.

25. The system according to claim 23, wherein the processor further operates the step of comparing the return data to expected data, and if the return data does not match the expected data, operating the processor at a functional level that does not permit the processor to boot.

26. The system according to claim 23, wherein the processor further operates the step of comparing the return data to expected data, and if the return data matches the expected data, operating the processor at a functional level that allows the processor to fully function.

27. The system according to claim 23, wherein the controller device and the processor are inside the same target device.

28. The system according to claim 23, wherein the controller device and the processor are mounted on the same printed circuit board.

29. The system according to claim 23, wherein the controller device is a radio frequency controller device, and the radio controller device includes a switch that is set responsive to receiving an RF signal.

30. The system according to claim 23, wherein the controller device and the processor are mounted on different printed circuit boards.

31. The system according to claim 23, wherein the processor further operates the step of generating the return data.

32. The system according to claim 23, wherein the controller device operates a data processing process on the data to generate the return data.

33. The system according to claim 32, wherein the controller device includes a switch, and the data processing process is active only when the switch is activated.

34. The system according to claim 34, wherein the switch is activated responsive to the controller device receiving an RF signal.

35. The system according to claim 34, wherein the switch is permanently activated responsive to the controller device receiving the RF signal.
