Abstract

A method for modifying the surface chemistry of an elastomeric substrate and articles embodying the substrate is described. The method involves pre-treating the substrate surface to create active oxygen groups on the substrate for immobilizing securely an antimicrobial agent to the substrate. The active oxygen groups can react and bind with functional groups of the antimicrobial molecules according to predetermined orientation to enhance biocide reactivity.

Claims

1. A method for immobilizing anti-microbial compounds onto an elastomeric surface, the method comprises:

a) providing substrate having a surface with either polar or non-polar functionality;

b) providing at least a layer of molecules, said molecules having at least bi-functional polar character selected from hydroxyl, amine, amides, imine, imide, carbonyl, carboxyl, ester, aldehyde, or ether groups, in which at least one portion of said molecules has a reactive oxygen or nitrogen group exposed, and applying to said layer an anti-microbial agent having a functional group reactive with said exposed oxygen group.

2. The method according to claim 1, wherein the substrate is either a natural or synthetic latex, or vinyl material.

3. The method according to claim 1, wherein said layer of molecules is adapted to be a covalent linker agent for immobilizing said anti-microbial agent to said elastomeric surface.

4. The method according to claim 1, wherein said layer of molecules either a) forms part of an intermediate tying coating between said substrate and said anti-microbial agent, or b) is integrated into said substrate surface.

5. The method according to claim 1, wherein said anti-microbial compound is non-leaching, remaining substantially bonded to said substrate.

6. The method according to claim 1, wherein said anti-microbial compound has a R-group with a hydrocarbon chain of at least 6 carbon units as an active anti-microbial moiety.

7. The method according to claim 1, wherein said anti-microbial compound includes a quaternary ammonium compound, biguanide, or an alkylsulfosuccinate compound.

8. The method according to claim 6, wherein said layer of molecules orients said active anti-microbial moiety of said anti-microbial compound substantially away from said substrate surface.

9. The method according to claim 8, wherein said layer of molecules includes at least one of the following:

polyvinyl alcohol, carboxyl-methyl cellulose, hydroxy-propyl cellulose, poly(diallyl-dimethyl-ammonium chloride) (PDADMAC), or epihalohydrin-amine polymers.

10. An elastomeric article having a surface with an anti-microbial coating, said article comprises:

a substrate with polar functionalities, upon which is at least a coating of molecules;

said molecules having at least bi-functional polar character selected from hydroxyl, amine, amides, imine, imide, carbonyl, carboxyl, ester, aldehyde, or ether groups, in which at least one portion of said molecules has a reactive oxygen group exposed; and

, an anti-microbial compound having a functional group reactive with said oxygen group in said coating.

11. The elastomeric article according to claim 10, wherein said article has at an outer surface of said substrate a greater concentration of molecules having at least bi-functional polar characteristics than within said substrate.

12. The elastomeric article according to claim 10, wherein said article has a differentiated concentration gradient of molecules having at least bi-functional polar characteristics from inside to outside of said substrate, or from an inner surface to an outer surface.

13. The elastomeric article according to claim 10, wherein the substrate forms part of an article formed according to a dip-forming process.

14. The elastomeric article according to claim 10, wherein said substrate forms part of a protective or medical device.

15. The elastomeric article according to claim 10, wherein said substrate forms part of a glove, condom, catheter, or balloon.

16. A method for preparing an substrate for immobilizing an antimicrobial agent, the method comprises:

providing an elastomeric substrate having at least a first surface;

preparing said substrate surface to create a layer of exposed oxygen groups; and

applying to said layer an anti-microbial agent having a functional group reactive with said exposed oxygen groups.

17. The method according to claim 16, wherein said anti-microbial agent includes a silicon atom that forms a covalent bond with said oxygen groups on said surface.

18. The method according to claim 16, wherein when preparing said layer of exposed oxygen groups, either a plasma or corona treatment is applied to said substrate.

19. A method for preventing transmission of microbes in a healthcare or work environment, the method comprises:

a) providing an article with an elastomeric substrate having at least a first surface;

preparing said substrate surface with a chemical agent to create a layer of exposed oxygen groups;

b) applying to said layer an antimicrobial agent having a functional group reactive with said exposed oxygen groups; and

c) configuring said article to be an article useable in either a healthcare or work environment.

20. The method according to claim 19, wherein said article is either a glove, work suit, gown, or drape.

21. A method for providing an elastomeric article that can prevent transmission of microbes, the method comprises:

a) providing an elastomeric article having a surface treated with a chemical agent, which can generate reactive oxygen groups on said surface, and to which is applied in a stablely associated fashion an antimicrobial agent having at least a functional group that is reactive with said reactive oxygen groups, and b) providing a user instruction on how to use said elastomeric article.

The method according to claim 21, wherein said treated surface has either polar or non-polar functionality and at least a layer of molecules, said molecules having at least bi-functional polar character selected from hydroxyl, amine, amides, imine, imide, carbonyl, carboxyl, ester, aldehyde, or ether groups, in which at least one portion of said molecules has a reactive oxygen or nitrogen group exposed.
