Abstract

The present invention relates to a system and method for safely transfusing blood to a patient in a computerized healthcare environment is provided. A blood product to be administered to a patient is identified and the patient is identified. A database containing a plurality of blood compatibility test results is accessed and it is determined whether the database contains a blood compatibility test result for the identified blood product and identified patient. If so, it is determined whether the test result indicates that the identified blood product is compatible for the identified patient.

Claims

1. A method for safely transfusing blood to a patient in a computerized healthcare environment, the method comprising:

identifying a blood product to be administered to a patient;

identifying the patient;

accessing a database containing a plurality of blood compatibility test results;

determining whether the database contains a blood compatibility test result for the identified blood product and identified patient;

if so, determining whether the test result indicates that the identified blood product is compatible for the identified patient.

2. The method of claim 1, wherein if the identified blood product is compatible for the identified patient, notifying a user that the blood product unit is safe to administer to the identified patient.

3. The method of claim 1, wherein if the identified blood product is not compatible for the identified patient, notifying a healthcare user that the blood product is not safe to administer to the identified patient.

4. The method of claim 1, wherein the patient is identified by a patient identification number.

5. The method of claim 4, wherein the patient identification number is a bar code on a patient identification bracelet that may be scanned.

6. The method of claim 1, wherein the blood product is identified by a blood product identification number assigned by the blood product supplier.

7. The method of claim 6, wherein the blood product identification number is a bar code on the blood product packaging that may be scanned.

8. The method of claim 1, wherein if the database contains a blood compatibility test result for the identified blood product and identified patient, determining whether the compatibility testing for the patient has expired.

9. The method of claim 8, wherein if the compatibility testing has expired, notifying a user of the expiration compatibility testing.

10. The method of claim 1, further comprising:

accessing the database to determine whether the identified blood product has expired.

11. The method of claim 10, wherein if the identified blood product has expired, notifying a user of the expiration of the blood product.

12. The method of claim 1, wherein if the identified blood product has not been tested for compatibility with the identified patient, determining if any other blood products have been tested for the identified patient and are compatible for the identified patient.

13. The method of claim 12, wherein if it is determined that no other units have been tested for the identified patient and are compatible for the identified patient, determining if the identified blood product is a compatible blood type for the identified patient.

14. The method of claim 13, further comprising:

comparing the blood type of the identified patient with the blood type of the identified blood product to determine if it safe to be administered to the identified patient.

15. The method of claim 12, wherein if any other blood products have been tested for the identified patient and are compatible for the identified patient, notifying a user of the other compatible blood products.

16. A computer readable medium comprising the method of claim 1.

22. The system of claim 1, wherein the blood product is identified by a blood product identification number assigned by the blood product supplier.

23. The system of claim 22, wherein the blood product identification number is a bar code on the blood product packaging that may be scanned.

17. A system for safely transfusing blood to a patient in a computerized healthcare environment, the system comprising:

a first identifying component for identifying a blood product to be administered to a patient;

a second identifying component for identifying the patient;

an accessing component for accessing a database containing a plurality of blood compatibility test results;

a first determining component for determining whether the database contains a blood compatibility test result for the identified blood product and identified patient; and

a second determining component for determining whether the test result indicates that the identified blood product is compatible for the identified patient if the database contains a blood compatibility test result for the identified blood product and identified patient.

18. The system of claim 17, further comprising:

a notifying component for notifying a user that the blood product unit is safe to administer to the identified patient if the blood product is compatible for the identified patient.

19. The system of claim 17, further comprising:

a notifying component for notifying a healthcare user that the blood product is not safe to administer to the identified patient if the blood product is not compatible for the identified patient.

20. The system of claim 17, wherein the patient is identified by a patient identification number.

21. The system of claim 20, wherein the patient identification number is a bar code on a patient identification bracelet that may be scanned.

24. The system of claim 17, further comprising:

a third determining component for determining whether the compatibility testing for the patient has expired.

25. The system of claim 24, further comprising:

a notifying component notifying a user of the expiration compatibility testing.

26. The system of claim 17, further comprising:

a second accessing component for accessing the database to determine whether the identified blood product has expired.

27. The system of claim 26, further comprising:

a notifying component for notifying a user of the expiration of the blood product.

28. The system of claim 17, further comprising:

a third determining component for determining if any other blood products have been tested for the identified patient and are compatible for the identified patient if the identified blood product has not been tested for compatibility with the identified patient.

29. The system of claim 28, further comprising:

a fourth determining component for determining if the identified blood product is a compatible blood type for the identified patient if it is determined that no other units have been tested and are compatible for the identified patient.

30. The system of claim 29, further comprising:

a comparing component for comparing the blood type of the identified patient with the blood type of the identified blood product to determine if it safe to be administered to the patient.

31. The system of claim 30, further comprising:

a notifying component for notifying a user of the other compatible blood products if any other blood products have been tested and are compatible for the identified patient.

32. A system for safely transfusing blood to a patient in a computerized healthcare environment, the system comprising:

means for identifying a blood product to be administered to a patient;

means for identifying the patient;

means for accessing a database containing a plurality of blood compatibility test results;

means for determining whether the database contains a blood compatibility test result for the identified blood product and identified patient; and

means for determining whether the test result indicates that the identified blood product is compatible for the identified patient if the database contains a blood compatibility test result for the identified product and identified patient.

33. The system of claim 32, further comprising:

means for notifying a user that the blood product unit is safe to administer to the identified patient.

34. The system of claim 32, further comprising:

means for notifying a healthcare user that the blood product is not safe to administer to the identified patient.

35. The system of claim 32, further comprising:

means for determining whether the compatibility testing for the identified patient has expired.

36. The system of claim 32, further comprising:

means for accessing the database to determine whether the identified blood product has expired.
