Abstract

Disclosed is a method for enabling scalable progressive downloading of video signals. In the method, when a server transmits scalably encoded content data to a client, the server transmits some of the content data from a head of the content data to a tail of the content data according to transmission conditions, and transmits some of residual data of the content data having not been transmitted in the prior process. When scalably coded transmission content data is reproduced, the transmission content data are stored in a storage means as a file, the content data is read, decoded and output. Further, the recorded content data are read while an area having no recorded content data is skipped based on a specific code in the file.

Claims

1. A method for transmitting encoded content data, the method comprising:

a first step of transmitting some of the content data from a head of the content data to a tail of the content data according to transmission conditions, the transmitted data including information for identifying non-transmission portions of the content data; and

a second step of transmitting some of residual data of the content data having not been transmitted in the first step.

2. The method as claimed in claim 1, wherein the transmission conditions includes types of a sequence selected from a transmission-targeted terminal and/or an available transmission rate of a transmission channel.

3. The method as claimed in claim 1, wherein, in the second step, a process for partially transmitting the content data having not been transmitted in the first step from the head of the content data to the tail of the content data is performed more than twice.

4. The method as claimed in claim 1, wherein the content data have been encoded by a scalable scheme.

5. The method as claimed in claim 4, wherein said some of the content data having been transmitted in the first step corresponds to all or a portion of a sequence which can be presented by normal decoding even though picture or speech quality deteriorates.

6. The method as claimed in claim 1, wherein a status of a file having recoded the data received through the first step is distinguished from a status of a file having recoded the residual data received through the second step.

7. A method for reproducing scalably coded transmission content data, the method comprising steps of recording the transmission content data in a storage means as a file, reading the content data, decoding the read content data, and outputting the decoded content data,

wherein the recorded content data are read while an area having no recorded content data is skipped based on a specific code in the file.

8. The method as claimed in claim 7, wherein portions in the file from a portion having the recorded specific code to a portion before a data block starting without the specific code are skipped.

9. The method as claimed in claim 7, wherein portions in the file from a portion having the recorded specific code to a portion before a data block including a start code having a value different from the specific code are skipped.

The method as claimed in claim 7, wherein, when all of the content data are transmitted while a non-record area is generated in the file, the file is designated as a state distinguished from a state in which the file is initially generated and a state in which all of the content data are recorded in the file.

11. The method as claimed in claim 7, further comprising a step of recording residual data of the content data received through a transmission request to a server in a non-record area in the file.

12. The method as claimed in claim 11, further comprising a step of changing a status of the file after the data are completely recorded in the non-record area from a status in which the non-record area is not completely filled with the data.

13. The method as claimed in claim 7, further comprising a step of reducing a size of the file by filling the non-record area with content data recorded after the non-record area.

14. A method for reproducing scalably coded transmission content data, the method comprising steps of recording the content data in a file, simultaneously decoding the content data read from the file, and outputting the decoded the content data,

wherein the recorded content data are read while areas having no recorded content data are skipped based on a specific code in the file.

The method as claimed in claim 14, further comprising a step of, when the specific code appears during the decoding and a data block including the specific code is a block which may be truncated at random positions, recognizing that data of the corresponding block ends at a position at which the specific code has appeared, and continuing the decoding.
