Abstract

Methods and systems that provide enhanced personal video recorder (“PVR”) and interactive television program guide (“IPG”) functionality are provided. An interactive television application (“application”) may be implemented to provide such functionality. The application may be used to display a list of PVR recordings, to schedule recordings to a PVR, to configure recordings, to view a list of scheduled recordings, to configure recording settings, or to select delete priority settings for recordings. The application may integrate pay-per-view and PVR functionality. The application may send user notifications for changes that are to be made to the recording content of a PVR. Live programming may be buffered by the application using a straight buffers that are created for each new program. Parallel buffers for concurrent programs may be implemented using multiple tuners. Straight buffers may be used in managing or controlling the flow of programming. Television content may be automatically paused when a user is engaged in using the application. Multiple IPGs for different users of a PVR may be implemented. Other PVR related features are also provided.

Claims

1. A method for recording series programming, comprising:

receiving a user input of a selection of at least one series;

determining which programs in the selected series have been viewed by the user; and

recording the programs of the selected series that have not been viewed by the user.

2. The method of claim 1 further comprising scheduling to record the programs of the selected series that have not been viewed by the user.

3. The method of claim 1 further comprising retrieving from a database programs of the selected series for recording that have not been viewed by the user.

4. The method of claim 1 further comprising preventing the recording of a program that has not been viewed by the user if that program is already recorded.

5. The method of claim 1 further displaying a listing of at least one recorded program of the selected series that has not been viewed by the user.

6. The method of claim 1, further comprising:

receiving a user selection of a recorded program; and

playing back the selected recorded program.

7. The method of claim 1, wherein recording comprises storing the programs of the selected series that have not been viewed by the user on a video recorder.

8. The method of claim 1, wherein the user is a first user, the method further comprising:

receiving a user input of a selection of at least one series from a second user;

determining which programs in the selected series have been viewed by the second user; and

recording the programs of the selected series that have not been viewed by the second user.

9. The method of claim 1 further comprising:

monitoring user interactions with an interactive television program guide; and

storing in a database an indication of which programs have been viewed based on the monitored user interactions.

10. A system for recording series programming, comprising:

user equipment comprising a video recorder, the user equipment operative to;

receive a user input of a selection of at least one series;

determine which programs in the selected series have been viewed by the user; and

record the programs of the selected series that have not been viewed by the user on the video recorder.

11. The system of claim 10, wherein the user equipment is operative to record the programs of the selected series that have not been viewed by the user.

12. The system of claim 10, wherein the user equipment is operative to retrieve programs from a database of the selected series for recording that have not been viewed by the user.

13. The system of claim 10, wherein the user equipment is operative to prevent the recording of a program that has not been viewed by the user if that program is already recorded.

14. The system of claim 10, wherein the user equipment is operative to display a listing of at least one recorded program of the selected series that has not been viewed by the user.

15. The system of claim 10, wherein the user equipment is operative to:

receive a user selection of a recorded program; and

play back the selected recorded program.

16. The system of claim 10, wherein the user is a first user, the user equipment is operative to:

receive a user input of a selection of at least one series from a second user;

determine which programs in the selected series have been viewed by the second user; and

record the programs of the selected series that have not been viewed by the second user on the video recorder.

17. The system of claim 10, wherein the user equipment is operative to:

monitor user interactions with an interactive television program guide being implemented on the user equipment; and

store in a database an indication of which programs have been viewed based on the monitored user interactions.
