Abstract

A wireless communication device declares one of a plurality of extended instant messaging states and transmits the declared states to a presence information server. Declared extended instant messaging states for destination devices are received, and an enhanced instant message based on delared extended instant messaging states is generated.

Claims

1. A wireless communication device, comprising:

a processing subsystem, a memory subsystem, a display subsystem, a communication subsystem, and an input/output subsystem, the processing subsystem coupled to the memory subsystem, display subsystem, input/output subsystem and communication subsystem, and configured to store and retrieve data in the memory subsystem, to execute instructions stored in the memory subsystem, receive input data from the input/output subsystem, and to cause the communication subsystem to transmit and receive data over the communication network; and

program code comprising program instructions executable by the processing subsystem and stored in the memory subsystem and upon execution cause the wireless communication device to;

declare at least one extended instant messaging state for the wireless communication device;

transmit the declared extended instant messaging state to a presence information server;

receive another declared extended instant messaging state corresponding to a destination device; and

generate an enhanced instant message based on the declared instant messaging states.

2. The wireless communication device of claim 1, wherein:

the declared extended instant messaging states comprise proximity states.

3. The wireless communication device of claim 2, wherein:

the enhanced instant message comprises content automatically altered based on the location of the destination device.

4. The wireless communication device of claim 1, wherein:

the destination device comprises a wireless communication device.

5. The wireless communication device of claim 1, wherein:

the declared extended instant messaging state comprises an activity state that connotes a present activity interest of a user of the wireless communication device.

6. The wireless communication device of claim 1, wherein:

the declared extended instant messaging state comprises one of a broadband or narrow- band communication state.

7. The wireless communication device of claim 1, wherein:

the extended instant messaging states comprise instant states indicative of the current state of the wireless communication device; and

the program code comprises further program instructions executable by the processing subsystem and stored in the memory subsystem and upon execution cause the wireless communication device to;

declare an subsequent extended instant messaging state that is indicative of the current state of the wireless communication device upon the occurrence of a trigger event; and

transmit the subsequent extended instant messaging state to the presence information server.

8. The wireless communication device of claim 7, wherein:

the trigger event is an automatic trigger event.

9. The wireless communication device of claim 8, wherein:

the trigger event is a voluntary trigger event initiated by the user.

10. A method of wireless communication device communication, comprising:

declaring at least one extended instant messaging state for the wireless communication device;

transmitting the declared extended instant messaging state to a presence information server;

receiving another declared extended instant messaging state corresponding to a destination device; and

generating an enhanced instant message based on the declared instant messaging states.

11. The method of claim 10, wherein:

declaring at least one extended instant messaging state for the wireless communication device comprises declaring proximity states.

12. The method of claim 11, wherein:

generating an enhanced instant message based on the declared instant messaging states comprises automatically altering an instant message based on the location of the destination device.

13. The method of claim 12, wherein:

the destination device comprises a wireless communication device.

14. The method of claim 10, wherein:

the declared extended instant messaging state comprises an activity state that connotes a present activity interest of the user of the wireless communication device.

15. The method of claim 10, wherein:

the declared extended instant messaging state comprises one of a broadband or narrowband communication state.

16. The method of claim 10, wherein:

the extended instant messaging states comprise instant states indicative the current state of the wireless device.

17. The method of claim 16, further comprising:

monitoring for the occurrence of a trigger event;

declaring a subsequent extended instant messaging state that is indicative of the current state of the wireless communication device upon the occurrence of the trigger event; and

transmitting the subsequent extended instant messaging state to the presence information server.

18. The method of claim 17, wherein:

the trigger event is an automatic trigger event.

19. A wireless communication device, comprising:

means for declaring at least one extended instant messaging state for the wireless communication device;

means for transmitting the declared extended instant messaging state to a presence information server;

means for receiving another declared extended instant messaging state corresponding to a destination device; and

means for generating an enhanced instant message based on the declared instant messaging states.

20. The wireless communication device of claim 19, wherein:

the extended instant messaging states comprise instant states indicative the current state of the wireless device, and further comprising;

means for monitoring for the occurrence of a trigger event;

means for declaring a subsequent extended instant messaging state that is indicative of the current state of the wireless communication device upon the occurrence of the trigger event; and

means for transmitting the subsequent extended instant messaging state to the presence information server.
