Abstract

Disclosed is a method and apparatus for performing a procedure relative to a selected portion of the anatomy, for example, preparing a portion of a joint, such as a knee, for implantation of a prosthesis. The manner of preparing the selected portion of the anatomy can be assisted with the various apparatuses disclosed.

Claims

1. A system for performing a resection of a selected portion of an anatomy with a resection instrument, the system comprising:

a first member fixable to the selected portion of the anatomy;

a first movement defining portion defined by said first member;

a second member defining a second movement portion;

wherein said first movement portion defined by said first member and said second movement portion defined by said second member is operable to allow said second member to be moveable relative to said first member from a first position to a second position;

wherein the resection instrument is positionable relative to said second member in the first position and the second position to form a selected resection of the selected portion of the anatomy.

2. The system of claim 1, further comprising:

a third member movable relative to at least one of the first member, the second member, or combinations thereof;

wherein a movement of at least one of the second member, the third member, or combinations thereof contains the movement of the resection instrument relative to the selected portion of the anatomy.

3. The system of claim 1, further comprising;

a guide portion defined by said first member, including a passage defined through said first member.

4. The system of claim 1, wherein said second member defines a guide slot to guide the resection instrument.

5. The system of claim 1, further comprising:

a fixation member that extends from said first member and is operable to fix said first member relative to the selected portion of the anatomy.

6. The system of claim 5, further comprising:

a second fixation member moveable relative to said first member and positionable at an angle relative to said first fixation member.

7. The system of claim 1, wherein said first member defines a first dimension and a second dimension:

wherein said second dimension is less than said first dimension;

wherein the first movement portion defined by the first member is equal to or less than the second dimension.

8. The system of claim 7, wherein said first member defines a wall that is set at an angle relative to a longitudinal axis of said first member;

wherein the wall extends between said first dimension and said second dimension.

9. A system for resecting a distal femoral portion with a resection instrument, the system comprising:

a main guide portion;

a first dynamic connection portion operably interconnected with the main guide portion;

a first dynamic guide member;

a second dynamic connection portion operably interconnected with the first dynamic guide member;

a guide surface defined by at least one of the main guide portion, the first dynamic guide member, or combinations thereof;

wherein the guide surface is operable to guide the resection instrument during a substantial portion of the distal femoral resection.

10. The system of claim 9, wherein said second dynamic connection portion is complementary to the first dynamic connection portion to allow movement of said first dynamic guide number relative to said main guide portion.

11. The system of claim 9, wherein the guide surface defined by said main guide portion is operable to resect an anterior chamfer cut, a posterior chamfer cut, or combinations thereof.

12. The system of claim 9, wherein the guide surface defined by the main guide portion includes a fully contained passage.

13. The system of claim 9, wherein the guide surface includes a second guide surface defined by said first dynamic guide member.

14. The system of claim 9, further comprising:

a second dynamic guide member;

a third dynamic connection portion; and

a fourth dynamic connection portion defined by said main guide portion;

wherein said third dynamic connection portion and said fourth dynamic connection portion are operably interconnected.

16. The system of claim 9, wherein said main guide portion defines a first dimension substantially along a longitudinal axis of the main guide portion and a second dimension substantially parallel to said longitudinal axis, wherein said second dimension is less than said first dimension;

wherein a wall defined by said main guide portion substantially includes said second dimension.

17. The system of claim 16, wherein said main guide portion defines a second wall extending at an angle relative to said first wall to interconnect the first wall with a portion of the main guide portion defining said first dimension.

18. A method of using a resection assembly comprising:

providing a first member and a second member;

fixing the first member to a portion of the anatomy with a first fixation member;

guiding a first resection of a portion of the anatomy with the first member;

moving a second member relative to the first member; and

guiding a second resection of a portion of the anatomy with the second member while moving the second member.

15. The system of claim 18, wherein the guide surface includes a first guide surface defined by said main guide portion to form an anterior chamfer cut on the femur, a second guide surface defined by said main guide portion to form a posterior chamfer cut on the femur, a third guide surface defined by said first dynamic guide member to form an anterior resection, and a fourth guide surface defined by said second dynamic guide member to guide a resection instrument to form a posterior resection.

19. The method of claim 18 further comprising:

affixing the first member to the portion of the anatomy with a second fixation member;

wherein said second fixation member as can be positioned into the portion of the anatomy at an angle relative to said first fixation member.

20. The method of claim 18, further comprising:

providing a third member;

wherein the second member and the third member are provided on opposite sides of said first member.

21. The method of claim 20, further comprising;

guiding a third resection of the portion of the anatomy with the third member while moving the third member.

22. The method of claim 18, further comprising:

providing a distal femoral implant having a dimension;

wherein providing the first member includes providing the first member to have a dimension no greater than 75% of the dimension of the distal femoral prosthesis.

23. The method of claim 22,

wherein the first member includes a first dimension and a second dimension;

wherein the first dimension is the dimension that is no more than 75% of the dimension of the femoral implant and the second dimension is less than the first dimension.

24. The method of claim 18, further comprising:

positioning a femoral prosthesis relative to the portion of the anatomy resected during guiding a second resection of the portion of the anatomy.

25. A method of using a resection assembly, comprising:

providing a first member and a second member;

fixing the first member to a portion of the anatomy with a first fixation member;

moving a second member relative to the first member; and

guiding a second resection of the portion of the anatomy with the second member while moving the second member.

26. The method of claim 25 further comprising:

affixing the first member to the portion of the anatomy with a second fixation member;

wherein said second fixation member as can be positioned into the portion of the anatomy at an angle relative to said first fixation member.

27. The method of claim 25, further comprising;

guiding a second resection of the portion of the anatomy with the first member.

28. The method of claim 25, further comprising:

positioning a distal femoral implant relative to the portion of the anatomy resected, and

wherein the first member includes a first dimension and a second dimension;

wherein the first dimension is the dimension that is no more than 75% of the dimension of the femoral implant and the second dimension is less than the first dimension.
