Abstract

In a system for monitoring multiple sensors (10), multiple source devices send source data to one or more servers (14) using a signaling protocol such as SIP. The servers (14) process the source data and send processed source data to one or more terminals (18) using XML or similar protocol. The servers (14) can provide processing capability for transforming the source data and controlling the interface, such that the terminals (18) can have a relatively low processing capability.

Claims

1. A system for providing information based on the outputs of a plurality of source devices, comprising:

one or more destination devices;

circuitry associated with each of the source devices for transmitting source data using a signaling protocol;

one or more servers for;

receiving the data from the plurality of sources;

processing the data;

generating information for output on one or more of the destination devices.

2. The system of claim 1 wherein the signaling protocol is SIP (Session Initiation Protocol).

3. The system of claim 1 wherein the at least one server passes at least some of the information using XML (extensible markup language) messaging.

4. The system of claim 1 wherein at least one server processes data from multiple source devices for output to a destination device.

5. The system of claim 1 wherein at least one server is coupled to external databases.

6. The system of claim 1, wherein the one or more servers provide a multi-modal interface to the destination devices.

7. The system of claim 1 wherein the one or more servers provide handwriting recognition to the destination devices.

8. The system of claim 1 wherein the one or more servers provide speech recognition to the destination devices.

9. The system of claim 1 wherein the one or more servers provide text to speech capabilities.

10. A method of providing information based on the outputs of a plurality of source devices, comprising the steps of:

transmitting source data from the source devices using a signaling protocol;

receiving the source data from the plurality of source devices at one or more servers;

processing the source data at the one or more servers;

outputting the processed source data to one or more of the destination devices.

11. The method of claim 10 the transmitting step comprises the step of transmitting source data from the source devices using SIP (Session Initiation Protocol).

12. The method of claim 10 wherein the outputting step comprises the step of outputting the processed source data to one or more of the destination devices using XML (extensible markup language) messaging.

13. The method of claim 10 wherein the processing step comprises processing data from multiple source devices for output to a destination device.

14. The method of claim 10 wherein the processing step comprises includes accessing information from external databases for combining with data from the source devices.

15. The method of claim 10 and further comprising the step of providing a multi-modal interface to the destination devices, wherein the processing is performed by the one or more servers.

16. The method of claim 10 wherein the step of providing a multi-modal interface includes providing handwriting recognition to the destination devices.

17. The method of claim 10 wherein the step of providing a multi-modal interface includes providing speech recognition to the destination devices.

18. The method of claim 10 wherein the step of providing a multi-modal interface includes providing text to speech capabilities.
