Abstract

A liquid crystal display (LCD) apparatus is divided into a display area on which an image is displayed and a non-display area surrounding the display area. The LCD apparatus includes an organic insulating layer partially formed in the non-display area. A portion of the organic insulating layer is not formed, obtaining a vent space through which to exhaust air trapped when a first substrate is combined with a second substrate of the liquid crystal display apparatus. The LCD apparatus may rapidly and easily exhaust the trapped air from the display area and uniformly maintain the cell gap between the first and second substrates, improving display quality of the LCD apparatus.

Claims

1. A liquid crystal display apparatus comprising:

a first substrate divided into a first area displaying an image and a second area surrounding the first area, the first substrate including an organic insulating layer pattern in the second area;

a second substrate facing the first substrate;

a liquid crystal layer disposed in the first area between the first substrate and the second substrate; and

a first cell gap maintenance member formed in the second area on the organic insulating layer pattern to maintain a predetermined distance between the first substrate and the second substrate.

2. The liquid crystal display apparatus of claim 1, wherein the organic insulating layer pattern is spaced apart from each other by a predetermined distance.

3. The liquid crystal display apparatus of claim 1, further comprising a second cell gap maintenance member formed in the first area to maintain a predetermined distance between the first substrate and the second substrate.

4. The liquid crystal display apparatus of claim 3, wherein the first cell gap maintenance member has a width from about ten to about twenty times larger than that of the second cell gap maintenance member.

5. The liquid crystal display apparatus of claim 4, wherein the width of first cell gap maintenance member is from about 100 micrometers to about 200 micrometers.

The liquid crystal display apparatus of claim 4, wherein the first cell gap maintenance member adjacent to an edge of the first substrate has a first width, and the first cell gap maintenance member disposed between the first area and an adjacent first area has a second width smaller than the first width.

7. The liquid crystal display apparatus of claim 6, wherein the first width is about 200 micrometers.

8. The liquid crystal display apparatus of claim 6, wherein the second width is about 100 micrometers.

The liquid crystal display apparatus of claim 3, wherein the first cell gap maintenance member is spaced apart from an adjacent first cell gap maintenance member by a first distance, and the second cell gap maintenance member is spaced apart from an adjacent second cell gap maintenance member by a second distance, and the first distance is from about four times to about six times larger than the second distance.

The liquid crystal display apparatus of claim 3, wherein the first cell gap maintenance member is spaced apart from an adjacent first cell gap maintenance member by a third distance at an area adjacent to an edge of the first substrate, and the first cell gap maintenance member placed between the first area and an adjacent first area is spaced apart from an adjacent first cell gap maintenance member by a fourth distance smaller than the third distance.

11. The liquid crystal display apparatus of claim 3, wherein a shortest distance between an edge of the first substrate and the first cell gap maintenance member is about 5 millimeters.

12. The liquid crystal display apparatus of claim 1, further comprising a sealing member formed between the first substrate and the second substrate at the second area, and the sealing member combining the first substrate with the second substrate to seal the liquid crystal layer.

13. The liquid crystal display apparatus of claim 12, wherein the sealing member comprises a liquid crystal injection port to inject liquid crystal forming the liquid crystal layer.

14. The liquid crystal display apparatus of claim 13, wherein a portion of the first cell gap maintenance member is disposed at the liquid crystal injection port.

15. The liquid crystal display apparatus of claim 14, wherein the first cell gap maintenance member disposed at the liquid crystal injection port has a width substantially identical to that of the first cell gap maintenance placed between the first area and an adjacent first area.

The liquid crystal display apparatus of claim 15, wherein a distance between the first cell gap maintenance member and an adjacent first cell gap maintenance member at the liquid crystal injection port is substantially identical to a distance between the first cell gap maintenance member and an adjacent first cell gap maintenance member disposed between the first area and the adjacent first area.

17. A liquid crystal display apparatus comprising:

a first substrate divided into a first area displaying an image and a second area surrounding the first area;

a second substrate facing the first substrate;

a liquid crystal layer disposed in the first area between the first substrate and the second substrate;

a first cell gap maintenance member formed in the second area to maintain a predetermined distance between the first substrate and the second substrate; and

a second cell gap maintenance member formed in the first area to maintain a predetermined distance between the first substrate and the second substrate,

wherein the first cell gap maintenance member is spaced apart from an adjacent first cell gap maintenance member by a first distance, the second cell gap maintenance member is spaced apart from an adjacent second cell gap maintenance member by a second distance different from the first distance.

18. The liquid crystal display apparatus of claim 17, wherein the first distance is from about 4 times to about six times larger than the second distance.

19. The liquid crystal display apparatus of claim 18, wherein the first cell gap maintenance member is spaced apart from an adjacent first cell gap maintenance member by a third distance at an area adjacent to an edge of the first substrate, and the first cell gap maintenance member is spaced apart from an adjacent first cell gap maintenance member by a fourth distance smaller than the third distance between the first area and an adjacent first area.

20. The liquid crystal display apparatus of claim 17, wherein the first cell gap maintenance member has a width from about ten times to about twenty times larger than that of the second cell gap maintenance member.

21. The liquid crystal display apparatus of claim 20, wherein the first cell gap maintenance member adjacent to an edge of the first substrate has a first width, and the first cell gap maintenance member placed between the first area and an adjacent first area has a second width smaller than the first width.
