Abstract

A hand-held electronic device having a remote control application user interface that functions to displays operational mode information to a user. The graphical user interface may be used, for example, to setup the remote control application to control appliances for one or more users in one or more rooms, to perform activities, and to access favorites. The remote control application is also adapted to be upgradeable. Furthermore, the remote control application provides for the sharing of operational mode information.

Claims

1. A readable media having instructions for displaying information to a user of a hand-held device, comprising:

displaying to the user a plurality of iconic representations to which are assigned a first set of actions whereby activation of an iconic representation causes the hand-held device to perform the action assigned to the activated iconic representation and wherein activation of at least some of the iconic representations causes the hand-held device to transmit command codes for controlling the operation of one or more home appliances;

accepting input for assigning a new action to at least one of the iconic representations;

storing a representation of the assignment of the first set of actions to the iconic representations; and

allowing the user to access the stored representation of the assignment of first set of actions to the iconic representations to restore the assignment of the first set of actions to the iconic representations.

2. The readable media as recited in claim 1, wherein the step of accepting input comprises downloading command codes to the hand-held device which are mapped to corresponding ones of the iconic representations.

3. The readable media as recited in claim 1, wherein the step of accepting input comprises the user defining a macro to be assigned to the at least one of the iconic representations.

4. The readable media as recited in claim 1, wherein the step of accepting input comprises the user setting up the remote control to control the operation of a specific type and brand of home appliance.

5. A readable media, comprising:

a first set of data fields containing data indicative of attributes of a hardware platform;

a second set of data fields containing data indicative of attributes of devices the hardware platform is configured to remotely control the operation of;

a third set of data fields containing data indicative of attributes of pages displayable by the hardware platform;

a fourth set of data fields containing data indicative of attributes of soft keys comprising at least a portion of the pages; and

a fifth set of data fields containing data indicative of attributes of functions performed by the hardware platform in response to activation of the soft keys.

6. The readable media as recited in claim 5, further comprising a sixth set of data fields containing data descriptive of resources for use in display of the soft keys.

7. The readable media as recited in claim 5, further comprising a sixth set of data fields containing data indicative of attributes of a user of the hardware platform.

8. The readable media as recited in claim 7, further comprising a seventh set of data fields containing data indicative of a room in which the devices are found.

9. The readable media as recited in claim 5, further comprising instructions which perform the steps of:

displaying to a user a plurality of iconic representations wherein each iconic representation is originally assigned at least one function selected from the attributes of functions within the fifth set of data fields whereby activation of an iconic representation causes the hardware platform to perform the assigned function;

storing a representation of the original assignments between the plurality of iconic representations and the at least one function selected from the attributes of functions within the fifth set of data fields;

accepting input for subsequently assigning at least one function selected from the attributes of functions within the fifth set of data fields to at least one of the iconic representations; and

allowing the user to access the stored representation of the original assignments between the plurality of iconic representations and the at least one function selected from the attributes of functions within the fifth set of data fields to replace the subsequent assignment with the original assignment between the iconic representation and the at least one function selected from the attributes of functions within the fifth set of data fields.

10. The readable media as recited in claim 9, wherein the step of accepting input comprises downloading command codes to the handware platform which are stored within the fifth set of data fields and assigned to corresponding ones of the iconic representations.

11. The readable media as recited in claim 9, wherein the step of accepting input comprises the user defining a macro to be assigned to the at least one of the iconic representations.

12. The readable media as recited in claim 9, wherein the step of accepting input comprises the user setting up the hardware platform control to control the operation of a specific type and brand of home appliance.
