Abstract

A method and apparatus are provided to manage the assignment transmission resource of forward and reserve link that is assigned to transmitting entity for a period of time. An indication of a gap is provided whenever the transmitting entity is not transmitting actual data packets (e.g. whole or part of intended data or content), yet the transmitting entity is to maintain the assignment of the allocated resource. For example, an erasure signature packet comprising a first data pattern is transmitted on the assigned resource when there is no actual data to transmit on the assigned resource.

Claims

1. A method of managing an assignment of one or more resources in a scheduled data transmission system, the method comprising:

assigning a resource for undetermined duration and for transmitting a packet of data, wherein said resource continues to be available after transmission of a packet; and

transmitting said packet of data using said resource.

2. The method as claimed in claim 1, further comprising re-assigning said resource if determined that a packet error occurred while processing data on said resource.

3. The method as claimed in claim 1, further comprising transmitting one or more erasure signature packet using said resource if no other said packet of data is available to transmit.

4. The method as claimed in claim 3, further comprising expiring said assigned resource by not transmitting any said data packet and an erasure signature packet.

5. A method of managing assignment of resources in a communication system, the method comprising:

receiving an assignment notice indicating an assignment of resource and without transmitting an acknowledgement in response to the reception of the assignment notice; and

extracting data packets received over said assigned resource until a packet error occurs.

6. The method of claim 5, further comprising determining that said packet error occurred if at least one said data packet failed a predetermined test.

7. An apparatus configured to manage an assignment of one or more resources in a scheduled data transmission system, the apparatus comprising:

means for assigning a resource for undetermined duration and to transmit a packet of data, wherein said resource continues to be available after transmission of a packet; and

means for transmitting said packet of data using said resource.

8. The apparatus as claimed in claim 7, further comprising means for re-assigning said resource if determined that a packet error occurred while processing data on said resource.

9. The method as claimed in claim 7, further comprising transmitting one or more erasure signature packet using said resource if no other said packet of data is available to transmit.

10. The method as claimed in claim 9, further comprising expiring said assigned resource by not transmitting any said data packet and an erasure signature packet.

11. An apparatus configured to manage assignment of resources in a communication system, the apparatus comprising:

means for receiving an assignment notice indicating an assignment of resource and without transmitting an acknowledgement in response to the reception of the assignment notice; and

means for extracting data packets received over said assigned resource until a packet error occurs.

12. The method of claim 11, further comprising determining that said packet error occurred if at least one said data packet failed a predetermined test.

13. In a scheduled data transmission system, an apparatus comprising:

an electronic device configured to manage assignment of one or more resources;

configured to assign a resource for undetermined duration and for transmitting a packet of data, wherein said resource continues to be available after transmission of a packet; and

configured to transmit said packet of data using said resource.

14. The apparatus as claimed in claim 13, wherein said electronic device further configured to re-assign said resource if determined that a packet error occurred while processing data on said resource.

15. The apparatus as claimed in claim 13, wherein said electronic device further configured to transmit one or more erasure signature packet using said resource if no other said packet of data is available to transmit.

16. The apparatus as claimed in claim 15, wherein said electronic device further configured to expire said assigned resource by not transmitting any said data packet and an erasure signature packet.

17. In a scheduled data transmission system, an apparatus comprising:

an electronic device configured to manage assignment of one or more resources;

configured to receive an assignment notice indicating an assignment of resource and without transmitting an acknowledgement in response to the reception of the assignment notice; and

configured to extract data packets received over said assigned resource until a packet error occurs.

18. The apparatus as claimed in claim 18, wherein said electronic device further configured determine that said packet error occurred if at least one said data packet failed a predetermined test.

19. A machine-readable medium comprising instructions which, when executed by a machine, cause the machine to perform operations including:

assigning a resource for undetermined duration and for transmitting a packet of data, wherein said resource continues to be available after transmission of a packet; and

transmitting said packet of data using said resource.

20. A machine-readable medium comprising instructions which, when executed by a machine, cause the machine to perform operations including:

receiving an assignment notice indicating an assignment of a resource and without transmitting an acknowledgement in response to the reception of said assignment notice; and

extracting data packets received over said assigned resource until a packet error occurs.
