Abstract

A medical fluid delivery system for the use in the delivery of medical fluids. The medical fluid delivery system may include a pumping system, a disposable medical fluid line set and a valve operating system. The disposable tubing line set may include valves adapted to interface with the valve operating system. The valve operating system may be adapted to operate only selected valves using a single drive means. The pumping system may be operated over a wide range of medical fluid delivery rates by employing a bi-directional drive member and a transmission interfaced with the drive member and a pump.

Claims

1. A medical fluid delivery system for use in the delivery of one or more medical fluids, the medical fluid delivery system comprising:

a medical fluid line set comprising;

a first medical fluid delivery line for delivering a first medical fluid therethrough; and

,

a first valve adapted to interconnect with said first medical fluid delivery line, said first valve having a first interface adaptation; and

,

a first valve actuator having a second interface adaptation for interfacing with said first interface adaptation, wherein said valve actuator is positionable to at least a first position and a second position, wherein in said first position a portion of said medical fluid delivery line is pinched by said first valve thereby substantially occluding flow of medical fluids through said first medical fluid delivery line, and wherein in said second position medical fluid flow is at least partially non-occluded through said first medical fluid delivery line.

2. The medical fluid delivery system of claim 1, wherein said first interface adaptation and said second interface adaptation are sized to matably receive each other.

3. The medical fluid delivery system of claim 1, wherein in said second position said first interface adaptation and said second interface adaptation are matably engaged to open said first valve.

4. The medical fluid delivery system of claim 1, wherein one of said first interface adaptation and said second interface adaptation comprises an opening, wherein the other of said first interface adaptation and said second interface comprises a protrusion.

5. The medical fluid delivery system of claim 4, wherein said opening comprises at least one slot and wherein said protrusion comprises at least one pin.

6. The medical fluid delivery system of claim 5, wherein said at least one slot comprises:

a wide proximal end for matably receiving said first interface adaptation;

a narrow distal end; and

an arcuate path between said wide proximal end and said narrow distal end, wherein said first interface adaptation is sized to matably engage said at least one slot at a point along said arcuate path.

7. The medical fluid delivery system of claim 1, wherein said first valve is one of fixedly interconnected and slidably interconnected with said first medical fluid delivery line.

8. The medical fluid delivery system of claim 1, wherein said first valve comprises a biasing means for biasing said first valve in one of a normally-closed position and a normally-open position.

9. The medical fluid delivery system of claim 1, further comprising:

an actuator return member, wherein said actuator return member is adapted to automatically return said valve actuator from said second position to said first position.

10. The medical fluid delivery system of claim 9, wherein said actuator return member comprises a torsion spring operatively interfaced with said valve actuator.

11. The medical fluid delivery system of claim 1, further comprising:

a second medical fluid delivery line adapted for the delivery of a second medical fluid; and

a second valve adapted to interconnect with said second medical fluid delivery line, said second valve comprising at least one of said first interface adaptation and said second interface adaptation;

a second valve actuator for interfacing with said second valve, said second valve actuator comprising at least one of said first interface adaptation said second interface adaptation.

12. The medical fluid delivery system of claim 10, further comprising:

a valve controller adapted to mechanically impart motion to said first valve actuator and said second valve actuator, wherein a first motion output of said valve controller at least partially actuates said first valve actuator and wherein a second motion output of said valve controller at least partially actuates said second valve actuator.

13. The medical fluid delivery system of claim 11, wherein said first motion output and said second motion output are at least partially non-overlapping.

14. The medical fluid delivery system of claim 11, wherein said first motion output and said second motion output are non-overlapping.

15. The medical fluid delivery system of claim 10, wherein said first and second valve are one of fixedly interconnected and slidably interconnected to said first and second medical fluid delivery lines, respectively.

16. The medical fluid delivery system of claim 1, further comprising:

a bi-directional motor;

a transmission adapted to mechanically interface with said bi-directional motor; and

;

a pump drive member for providing a mechanical output in one direction, said pump drive member being adapted to mechanically interface with said transmission and said pump, wherein operation of said bi-directional motor in a first direction produces a first output that drives said pump drive member in said one direction in response thereto, and wherein operation of said bi-directional motor in a second direction produces a second output that drives pump drive member in said one direction in response thereto.

21. The method of claim 16, wherein the medical fluid line set further comprises:

a second medical fluid delivery line fluidly interconnected to a second medical fluid source and said medical output line; and

,

a second valve interconnected with said second medical fluid delivery line;

wherein the method further comprises;

interfacing a first interface adaptation of said second valve with a second interface adaptation of a second valve actuator, wherein said first and second interface adaptations of said second valve and second valve actuator, respectively, are interfaced for co-movement in at least one direction,

de-actuating said first valve actuator to return said first valve actuator to said first position;

second actuating said second valve actuator to move said second valve from a first position to a second position, wherein in said first position of said second valve actuator said second valve substantially occludes fluid flow through said second medical fluid delivery line, and in said second position of said second valve actuator said second valve permits fluid flow through said second medical fluid delivery line.

22. The method of claim 21, further comprising:

operating, during said second actuating step, said pump to deliver said second medical fluid.

23. The method of claim 21, wherein said first actuating step comprises:

first creating a first motion output of a valve controller mechanically interfaced with said first valve actuator;

wherein said second actuating step comprises;

second creating a second motion output of said valve controller, said valve controller being mechanically interfaced with said second valve actuator, wherein said first motion output and said second motion output are at least partially non-overlapping.

17. A method for use in the delivery of one or more medical fluids, the method comprising:

providing a medical fluid line set comprising;

a first medical fluid delivery line fluidly interconnected to a first medical fluid source;

a first valve interconnected with said first medical fluid delivery line; and

,

a medical fluid output line fluidly interconnected with said first medical fluid delivery line;

interconnecting a pump with said medical fluid output line;

interfacing a first interface adaptation of said first valve with a second interface adaptation of a first valve actuator, wherein said first and second interface adaptations are interfaced for co-movement in at least one direction,

actuating said valve actuator to move said valve from a first position to a second position, wherein in said first position said first valve occludes fluid flow through said first medical fluid delivery line and in said second position said first valve permits fluid flow through said first medical fluid delivery line.

operating, during said actuating step, said pump to deliver said first medical fluid.

18. The method of claim 17, further comprising:

automatically returning, after said actuating step, said valve actuator to said first position.

19. The method of claim 17, wherein, during said actuating step, said first interface adaptation and said second interface adaptation are matably engaged.

20. The method of claim 18, wherein one of said first interface adaptation and said second interface adaptation comprises an opening and the other of said first interface adaptation and said second interface adaptation comprises a protrusion, wherein said interfacing step comprises:

inserting said protrusion into said slot.

24. The method of claim 17, wherein said actuating comprises rotational movement of said first valve actuator.

25. The method of claim 24, wherein said first motion output corresponds to no more than 180 degrees of rotation of a portion of said valve controller.

26. The method of claim 17, wherein said first valve is one of fixedly interconnected and slidably interconnected with said first medical fluid delivery line.

27. The method of claim 17, wherein said operating said pump step comprises:

first moving a bi-directional drive member in a first direction to move a pump drive member in one direction; and

second moving said bi-direction drive member in a second direction to move said pump drive member in said one direction.

28. The method of claim 17, further comprising:

moving a component of said pump in linear response to an angular output of an angular element to enable placement of said medical fluid output line within said pump.

29. The method of claim 28, wherein said component of said pump is an anvil and said angular element is a cover.

30. The method of claim 28, wherein said angular output comprises rotational movement of said angular element from a first position to a second position.

31. A valve operating system for use in delivering a plurality of medical fluids, the valve operating system comprising:

first and second valve interface members comprising;

first and second valve actuators adapted to operatively interface with first and second medical fluid delivery line valves, respectively; and

,

a valve controller mechanically interfaced with said first and second valve interface members, wherein a first motion output of said valve controller at least partially actuates said first valve actuator and wherein a second motion output of said valve controller at least partially actuates said second valve actuator, wherein said first motion output and said second motion output are at least partially non-overlapping.

32. The valve actuator system of claim 31, wherein said first motion output and said second motion output are non-overlapping.

33. The valve operating system of claim 31, wherein said first and second motion outputs comprise circular rotation of at least a portion of the valve controller.

34. The valve operating system of claim 33, wherein said first motion output comprises first arcuate rotation of a first activation member and said second motion output comprises second arcuate rotation of a second activation member.

35. The valve operating system of claim 34, wherein said first arcuate rotation corresponds to rotation of said first activation member by no more than 180 degrees.

36. The valve operating system of claim 34, wherein said second arcuate rotation corresponds to rotation of said second activation member by no more than 180 degrees.

37. The valve operating system of claim 36, wherein said first and second arcuate rotations occur at least coincidentally.

38. The valve operating system of claim 31, wherein said valve controller comprises:

first and second activation members adapted to operatively interface with said first and second valve interface members, respectively.

39. The valve operating system of claim 38, wherein said first motion output corresponds to movement of said valve controller from a first controller position to a second controller position, and wherein said second motion output corresponds to movement of said valve controller from said second controller position to a third controller position.

40. The valve operating system of claim 39, wherein in said first controller position said first activation member is at least partially interfaced with said first valve interface member and said second activation member is at most partially interfaced with said second valve interface member.

41. The valve operating system of claim 40, wherein in said first controller position said second activation member is not interfaced with said second valve interface member.

42. The valve operating system of claim 39, wherein in said second controller position said first activation member is partially interfaced with said first valve interface member and said second activation member is partially interfaced with said second valve interface member.

43. The valve operating system of claim 39, wherein in said third controller position, said first activation member is at most partially interfaced with said first valve interface member and said second activation member is at least partially interfaced with said second valve interface member.

44. The valve operating system of claim 43, wherein in said third controller position, said first activation member is not interfaced with said first valve interface member.

45. The valve operating system of claim 38, wherein said valve controller comprises:

a central motion transfer member adapted to operatively interface with said first and second activation members.

46. The valve operating system of claim 45, wherein said central motion transfer member comprises a drive motor mechanically interfaced with a central drive gear.

47. The valve operating system of claim 45, wherein said first activation member comprises:

an upper section adapted to mechanically interface with said first valve interface member, said upper section comprising an active interface portion extending about a segment of the perimeter of said upper section of said first activation member; and

,

a lower section mechanically interfaced with said central motion transfer member, said lower section comprising a motion transfer mechanism about the perimeter of said lower section of said first activation member.

48. The valve operating system of claim 47, wherein said active interface portion is contiguous.

49. The valve operating system of claim 47, wherein said active interface portion comprises geared teeth for mechanically interfacing with said first valve interface member.

50. The valve operating system of claim 31, wherein said first valve actuator is adapted to automatically return to a starting position in the absence of said first motion output.

51. The valve operating system of claim 31, wherein said first valve actuator is biased with an actuator return member, wherein said actuator return member provides a motive force for automatically returning said first valve actuator to a starting position in the absence of said first motion output.

52. The valve operating system of claim 51, wherein said actuator return member comprises a torsion spring.

53. The valve operating system of claim 31, wherein said first medical fluid delivery valve is biased in one of a normally-closed and normally open position.

54. A method for delivering a plurality of medical fluids, the method comprising:

fluidly interconnecting at least first and second medical fluid delivery lines with one pump;

first operating, during said fluidly interconnecting, said one pump to deliver a first medical liquid through said first medical fluid delivery line;

second operating, during said fluidly interconnecting, said one pump to deliver a second medical liquid through said second medical fluid delivery line in at least non-overlapping relation to said first operating step.

55. The method of claim 54, wherein said fluidly interconnecting step comprises the steps of:

first interfacing a first valve interconnected with said first medical fluid delivery line with a first valve actuator;

second interfacing a second valve interconnected with said second medical fluid delivery line with a second valve actuator.

56. The method of claim 55, further comprising:

first positioning a valve controller from a first controller position to a second controller position to actuate said first valve actuator, wherein said second valve actuator remains in a non-actuated positioned during said first positioning.

57. The method of claim 56, further comprising:

second positioning a valve controller from said second controller position to a third controller position to actuate said second valve actuator.

58. The method of claim 56, further comprising:

automatically returning, after said first positioning step, said first valve actuator to a non-actuated position.

59. The method of claim 55 further comprising:

actuating said first valve actuator.

60. The method of claim 59, wherein said actuating step comprises:

first moving a valve controller in a first direction; and

driving, during said first moving step, said first valve actuator from a non-actuated position to an actuated position.

61. The method of claim 60, wherein said actuating step comprises:

second moving, prior to said first moving step, said valve controller in a second direction to position said valve controller for said first moving step.

62. The method of claim 61, wherein during said second moving step said second valve actuator is in a non-actuated position.

63. The method of claim 61, wherein during both said first moving and second moving steps said second valve actuator is in a non-actuated position.

64. The method of claim 59, wherein said actuating step occurs prior to said second operating step.

65. The method of claim 59, wherein said actuating said first valve controller step is a first actuating, the method further comprising:

second actuating said second valve actuator.

66. The method of claim 55, wherein said first interfacing step comprises:

relating said first valve to said first valve actuator by matching a color designation of said first valve to a color designation of said first valve actuator.

67. The method of claim 55, further comprising:

moving, prior to said fluidly interconnecting, a component of said one pump in linear response to an angular output of an angular element to enable placement of a medical fluid output line within said pump.

68. A pumping system for delivering medical fluids, the pumping system comprising:

a bi-directional drive member adapted for operation in a first direction to produce a first drive output and for operation in a second direction to produce a second drive output;

a pump drive member for providing a mechanical output in one direction;

a first motion transfer member mechanically interfaced with said bi-directional drive member and said pump drive member, said first motion transfer member being adapted to drive said pump drive member in said one direction in response to said first drive output;

a second motion transfer member mechanically interfaced with said bi-directional drive member and said pump drive member, said second motion transfer member being adapted to drive said pump drive member in said one direction in response to said second drive output; and

a pump for pumping medical fluids, said pump being mechanically interfaced with said pump drive member.

69. The pumping system of claim 68, wherein said bi-directional drive member comprises a bi-directional motor mechanically interfaced with a motor gear.

70. The pumping system of claim 68, wherein first motion transfer member comprises a first gear and a first one-way clutch, wherein said first gear is mechanically interfaced with said bi-directional drive member and said pump drive member.

71. The pumping system of claim 70, wherein said first one-way clutch slips in response to said second drive output.

72. The pumping system of claim 68, wherein said second motion transfer member comprises a second gear, a second one-way clutch and at least one additional gear, wherein said second gear is mechanically interfaced with said bi-directional drive member and said at least one additional gear, and wherein said at least one additional gear is mechanically interfaced with said pump drive member.

73. The pumping system of claim 72, wherein said second one-way clutch slips in response to said first drive output.

74. The pumping system of claim 73, further comprising:

a third motion transfer member mechanically interfaced with said pump drive member and said at least one additional gear, wherein said third motion transfer member slips in response to said first drive output.

75. The pumping system of claim 68, wherein at least a portion of said first motion transfer member slips in response to said second drive output.

76. The pumping system of claim 68, wherein said first motion transfer member does not drive said pump drive member in response to said second drive output.

77. The pumping system of claim 68, wherein at least a portion of said second motion transfer member slips in response to said first drive output.

78. The pumping system of claim 68, wherein said second motion transfer member does not drive said pump drive member in response to said first drive output.

79. The pumping system of claim 68, wherein said pump drive member moves in said one direction at a first speed in response to said first drive output, and wherein said pump drive member moves in said one direction at a second speed in response to said second drive output.

80. The pumping system of claim 79, wherein said first speed and said second speed are not identical.

81. The pumping system of claim 68, wherein said first drive output corresponds to a delivery rate of between 0.1 ml/hour and 1000 ml/hour of medical fluid.

82. The pumping system of claim 68, wherein said second drive output corresponds to a delivery rate of between 0.1 m/hour and 1000 ml/hour of medical fluid.

83. The pumping system of claim 68, wherein said first direction is one of a clockwise and counterclockwise direction.

84. The pumping system of claim 83, wherein said second direction is the opposite of said first direction.

85. The pumping system of claim 68, wherein said pumping device is a rotary peristaltic pump.

86. A method for delivering a medical fluid at varying rates using a single pump, the method comprising:

interconnecting a medical fluid line with one pump;

first operating a bi-directional drive member in a first direction to produce a first drive output, wherein said first drive output drives said one pump in one direction; and

,

second operating said bi-directional drive member in a second direction to produce a second drive output, wherein said second drive output drives said one pump in said one direction.

87. The method of claim 86, wherein said bi-directional drive member is operable to selectively provide said first output within a first predetermined operating range and to selectively provide said second output within a second predetermined operating range, wherein said first predetermined operating range corresponds to a first medical fluid delivery rate range, and wherein said second predetermined operating range corresponds to a second medical fluid delivery rate range, wherein said first and second medical fluid delivery rate ranges are at least partially non-overlapping.

88. The method of claim 87, wherein said first and second medical fluid delivery rate ranges are non-overlapping.

89. The method of claim 87, wherein said first medical fluid delivery rate range has a minimum fluid delivery rate of 5 ml per hour, and wherein said second medical fluid delivery rate range has a maximum fluid delivery rate of 100 ml per hour.

90. The method of claim 89, wherein said first medical fluid delivery rate has a maximum fluid delivery rate of 1000 ml per hour.

91. The method of claim 89, wherein said second medical fluid delivery rate range has a minimum fluid delivery rate of 0.1 ml per hour.

92. The method of claim 86, wherein said bi-directional drive member comprises a bi-directional motor.

93. The method of claim 86, wherein said first operating step comprises movement of said bi-directional drive member in one of a clockwise and counterclockwise direction, and wherein said second operating step comprises movement of said bi-directional drive member in the opposite direction of said first operating step.

94. The method of claim 86, wherein said first operating step comprises:

first driving a pump drive member in a rotational direction in response to motion from a first motion transfer member, wherein said pump drive member is mechanically interfaced with said one pump and said first motion transfer member, and wherein said first motion transfer member is mechanically interfaced with said bi-directional drive member.

95. The method of claim 94, wherein said second operating step comprises:

second driving said pump drive member in said rotational direction in response to motion from a second motion transfer member, wherein said pump drive member is mechanically interfaced with said second motion transfer member, and wherein said second motion transfer member is mechanically interfaced with said bi-directional drive member.

96. The method of claim 94, wherein said second motion transfer member does not drive pump drive member during said first driving step, and wherein said first motion transfer member does not drive said pump drive member during said second driving step.

97. The method of claim 86, wherein said interconnecting step comprises:

moving a component of said one pump in linear response to an angular output of an angular element to enable placement of said medical fluid line within said pump.

98. The method of claim 97, wherein said component of said pump is an anvil and said angular element is a cover.

99. The method of claim 97, wherein said angular output comprises rotational movement of said angular element from a first position to a second position.

100. A pinch-valve adapted for engaging a medical fluid delivery line, the pinch valve comprising:

first and second elongated members, wherein at least one of said first and second elongated members is adapted to receive a medical fluid delivery line, wherein in a first position a portion of said medical fluid delivery line is pinched between said first and second elongated members to substantially occlude medical fluid flow therethrough; and

,

a biasing means for forcing at least one of said first and second elongated members in at least a first direction about a pivot point to said first position.

101. The pinch-valve of claim 100, wherein said pinch valve comprises a color designator for relating said pinch-valve to a valve actuator.

102. The pinch-valve of claim 100, wherein in said first position said portion of said medical fluid delivery line is contacted in at least three points by said pinch-valve.

103. The pinch-valve of claim 100, further comprising:

at least one interface adaptation for interfacing said pinch-valve with a valve actuator.

104. The pinch-valve of claim 103, wherein said at least one interface adaptation is an opening for matably receiving a protrusion.

105. The pinch-valve of claim 104, wherein said opening comprises at least one slot.

106. The pinch-valve of claim 103, wherein said at least one interface adaptation is a protrusion for matably protruding into an opening.

107. The pinch-valve of claim 106, wherein said protrusion comprises at least one pin.

108. The pinch-valve of claim 100, wherein in said first position medical fluid is substantially occluded from flowing through said portion of said medical fluid delivery line.

109. The pinch-valve of claim 100, wherein in a second position medical fluid may flow through said portion of said medical fluid delivery line.

110. The pinch-valve of claim 100, wherein said first elongated member comprises a first rib, said second elongated member comprises a first valley, and wherein in said first position said portion of said medical fluid line in pinched between said first rib and said first valley to form said portion of said medical fluid line into a serpentine path.

111. The pinch-valve of claim 101, further comprising:

a lock mechanism for locking said pinch-valve in said second position, wherein in said second position said portion of said medical fluid delivery line is at least partially non-occluded.

112. The pinch-valve of claim 111, wherein said lock mechanism is operatively interconnected with at least one of said first and second elongated members to maintain said pinch-valve in said second position.

113. The pinch-valve of claim 111, wherein said lock-mechanism is fixedly interconnected to at least one of said first and second elongated members.

114. The pinch-valve of claim 111, wherein said lock-mechanism is readily removable from said pinch-valve.

115. A method for delivering a medical fluid, the method comprising:

interconnecting, at first location, a plurality of valves to a corresponding plurality of medical fluid delivery lines, said interconnected plurality of valves and plurality of medical fluid delivery lines defining a medical fluid line set;

interfacing said medical fluid line set with a pump; and

delivering, at a second location remote from said first location, a medical fluid through at least one of said plurality of medical fluid delivery lines using said pump.

116. The method of claim 115, wherein said interconnecting step comprises:

attaching said plurality of valves to said corresponding plurality of medical fluid delivery lines.

117. The method of claim 115, further comprising:

second interconnecting said plurality of medical fluid delivery lines with a manifold.

118. The method of claim 117, wherein said second interconnecting occurs at said first location.

119. The method of claim 117, wherein said interfacing step comprises:

third interconnecting said manifold with a medical fluid output line; and

placing said medical fluid output line in a portion of said pump.

120. The method of claim 115, wherein said interfacing step occurs at said second location.

121. The method of claim 115, further comprising:

transferring said medical fluid line set from said first location to another location.

122. The method of claim 121, wherein said another location is said second location.

123. The method of claim 121, further comprising:

actuating, prior to said transferring step, at least one of said plurality of valves to a non-pinching position.

124. The method of claim 123, wherein in said non-pinching position said at least one of said plurality of valves does not substantially pinch a corresponding one of said plurality of medical fluid delivery lines.

125. The method of claim 123, further comprising:

maintaining, during said transferring step, said at least one of said plurality of valves in said non-pinching position.

126. The method of claim 123, further comprising:

de-actuating, after said transferring step, said at least one of said plurality of valves to a pinching position.

127. The method of claim 123, further comprising:

packaging said medical fluid line set.

128. The method of claim 127, wherein said packaging step occurs after said actuating step.

129. The method of claim 127, further comprising:

sterilizing said medical fluid line set.

130. The method of claim 129, wherein said sterilizing step occurs before said transferring step.

131. The method of claim 115, further comprising:

relating said plurality of valves to said plurality of medical fluid delivery lines.

132. The method of claim 131, wherein said relating step comprises:

matching a color designation of said plurality of valves to a color designation of said plurality of medical fluid delivery lines.

133. The method of claim 115, wherein each of said plurality of valves comprises a first interface adaptation, the method further comprising:

second interfacing said plurality of valves with a corresponding plurality of valve actuators, wherein each of said plurality of valve actuators comprises a second interface adaptation for interfacing with said first interface adaptation.

134. The method of claim 133, further comprising:

relating, prior to said second interfacing, said plurality of valves to said plurality of valve actuators.

135. The method of claim 134, wherein said relating step comprises:

matching a color designation of a component of said medical fluid line set to a color designation of a second component.

136. The method of claim 135, wherein said component of said medical fluid line set is one of said plurality of valve actuators and said plurality of medical fluid delivery lines.
