Abstract

A method on a computing device is provided for enhancing the memory and cognitive ability of an older adult by requiring the adult to listen to two or more aurally processed syllables, presented serially, view the syllables graphically, and then designate the order in which the syllables were aurally presented. A number of trials are presented to the adult. As the adult correctly determines the syllable order in trials, the difficulty of the trials is increased by increasing the number of syllables presented, and by reducing the amount of processing that is applied to the syllables.

Claims

1. A computer-implemented method for enhancing memory and cognition in a person, the method comprising:

presenting a sequence of one or more auditory instructions that have been processed by the computer, the auditory instructions indicating a corresponding sequence of actions to be performed by the person, wherein the actions comprise manipulations of graphical objects displayed on a display of a computing device;

receiving input from the person, wherein the input manipulates the graphical objects on the display;

determining if the person has correctly performed the sequence of actions;

indicating whether the person has correctly performed the sequence of actions; and

repeating said presenting, said receiving, said determining, and said indicating with respect to each of a plurality of sequences of auditory instructions in an iterative manner to improve the person'"'"'s ability to process auditory instructions.

2. The method of claim 1, wherein the auditory instructions comprise:

instructions of lower complexity directed to stimulus discrimination, composing a first category;

instructions of higher complexity directed to stimulus discrimination, composing a second category;

instructions of lower complexity directed to memory, composing a third category; and

instructions of higher complexity directed to memory, composing a fourth category.

3. The method of claim 2, wherein each of the instructions of lower complexity directed to stimulus discrimination comprises an instruction to:

select a respective graphical object with a pointing device.

4. The method of claim 2, wherein each of the instructions of higher complexity directed to stimulus discrimination comprises an instruction to:

select a respective graphical object with a pointing device, wherein the respective graphical object is qualified by one or more adjectives and/or one or more prepositional phrases.

5. The method of claim 2, wherein each of the instructions of lower complexity directed to memory comprises an instruction to:

move a respective first graphical object with respect to a respective second graphical object.

6. The method of claim 2, wherein each of the instructions of higher complexity directed to memory comprises an instruction to:

move a respective first graphical object with respect to a respective second graphical object, wherein one or both of the respective first graphical object and the respective second graphical object are qualified by one or more adjectives and/or one or more prepositional phrases.

7. The method of claim 1, wherein each of the plurality of sequences of auditory instructions has a respective difficulty based on one or more of:

a stage, corresponding to the number of instructions in the sequence;

complexity of the instructions; and

a level of processing of the auditory instructions, wherein the level of processing corresponds to the degree to which the auditory instructions have been processed to enhance clarity of the auditory instructions.

8. The method of claim 7, wherein the complexity of the instructions is based on one or more of:

use of adjectives qualifying one or more objects referred to in the instructions; and

use of prepositional phrases qualifying one or more objects referred to in the instructions.

9. The method of claim 7, wherein the level of processing of the auditory instructions is based one or more of:

modifying a rate at which at least a portion of the auditory instructions are played, wherein said modifying maintains characteristic pitch-pulse-phase synchronous temporal structure of voiced speech sounds; and

emphasizing portions of the auditory instructions, wherein said emphasizing uses band-modulation deepening to selectively enhance relatively fast-changing events in the voiced speech sounds.

10. The method of claim 7,

wherein a trial comprises said performing said presenting, said receiving, said determining, and said indicating with respect to a respective sequence of auditory instructions;

and

wherein a block comprises a specified number of trials with respect to instructions of a respective category, stage, and level of processing.

11. The method of claim 10, further comprising:

conducting a plurality of blocks of trials, wherein said conducting the plurality of blocks of trials comprises said presenting, said receiving, said determining, said indicating, and said repeating.

12. The method of claim 11, wherein said conducting the plurality of blocks of trials comprises:

upon completion of each block of trials, evaluating the person'"'"'s performance for the block;

selecting a next block of trials to conduct based on said evaluating.

13. The method of claim 12, wherein, for each block, instructions are selected randomly from the category of instructions for the block.

14. The method of claim 12, further comprising:

prior to said conducting the plurality of blocks of trials, conducting one or more initial blocks of trials as an initiation process;

if the person performs satisfactorily in the initiation process, performing said conducting the plurality of blocks of trials.

15. The method of claim 14, wherein the initiation process comprises:

providing visual cues for a first trial of each of the one or more initial blocks;

if the person correctly performs the action for the first trial, omitting the visual cues for subsequent trials until the person incorrectly performs an action, then resuming provision of the visual cues.

16. The method of claim 12, wherein said conducting the plurality of blocks of trials is performed over a series of sessions with the person, the method further comprising:

changing one or more of the category, the level of processing, and the stage during the session, depending on the performance of the person.

17. The method of claim 16, wherein the series of session comprises an initial session, wherein the initial session begins with:

a trial of the first category, with a high level of processing, and a lowest stage, wherein the lowest stage corresponds to single instructions.

18. The method of claim 16, wherein each subsequent session in the series of sessions begins with the category, the level of processing, and the stage at which the previous session ended.

19. The method of claim 17, further comprising:

prior to each session in the series of sessions, conducting one or more single instruction warm-up trials using instructions selected randomly from the session'"'"'s category.

20. The method of claim 17, wherein said conducting the plurality of blocks of trials comprises progressing within a current category by:

conducting a block of trials, of the current category, with a current level of processing, at a first stage;

if the person achieves a first level of success with the block of trials, incrementing the current stage, limited by a maximum stage;

if the person achieves a second level of success with the block of trials, retaining the current stage; and

if the person achieves a third level of success with the block of trials, decrementing the stage, limited by a minimum stage of one.

21. The method of claim 17, wherein said conducting the plurality of blocks of trials comprises:

exiting and closing a category when first criteria are met, wherein instructions of a closed category are not available for use, and wherein a closed category is reopened when;

the level of processing changes;

or

the person returns from an initiation process.

22. The method of claim 21, wherein the first criteria comprise any of:

the person achieving a first level of success with a block of trials of the category;

the person achieving a second level of success with a first specified number of consecutive blocks of trials of the category;

the person achieving a third level of success with a second specified number of consecutive blocks of trials of the category;

the person consecutively advancing and retreating a specified number of times between two stages in the category; and

the person completing a specified number of trials in the category without meeting any other first criteria.

23. The method of claim 22, further comprising:

if the person achieves the third level of success with the second specified number of consecutive blocks of trials of the first category at a lowest stage, returning the person to an initiation process.

24. The method of claim 21, wherein, after exiting and closing a category, the person progresses to a next category according to a specified sequence of categories.

25. The method of claim 24, wherein the specified sequence of categories is specified by iteratively cycling through the first category, the second category, the third category, and the fourth category in order, wherein the specified sequence of categories is maintained across sessions.

26. The method of claim 17, wherein said conducting the plurality of blocks of trials comprises:

exiting a category when exiting criteria are met, wherein the exiting criteria comprise any of;

the person achieving a first level of success with a first specified number of block of trials of the category at a highest stage;

the person achieving a second level of success with a second specified number of consecutive blocks of trials of the category at the same stage;

the person achieving a third level of success with a third specified number of consecutive blocks of trials of the category; and

a time-out.

27. The method of claim 26, wherein said conducting the plurality of blocks of trials comprises:

closing a category when first criteria are met, wherein instructions of a closed category are not available for use, and wherein a closed category is reopened when;

the level of processing changes;

or

the person returns from an initiation process.

28. The method of claim 27, wherein the first criteria comprise:

the person exiting the category a specified number of times.

29. The method of claim 28, further comprising:

if the person exits the first category due to the person achieving the third level of success with the third specified number of consecutive blocks of trials of the category at a lowest stage, returning the person to an initiation process.

30. The method of claim 27, wherein the first criteria comprise:

the person exiting the category a first specified number of times by achieving the first level of success with the first specified number of block of trials of the category at the highest stage;

the person exiting the category a second specified number of times by achieving the second level of success with the second specified number of consecutive blocks of trials of the category at the same stage;

the person exiting the category a third specified number of times by achieving the third level of success with the third specified number of consecutive blocks of trials of the category; and

the person exiting the category a fourth specified number of times by consecutively advancing and retreating a fifth specified number of times between two stages in the category.

31. The method of claim 30, further comprising:

if the person exits the first category due to the person achieving the third level of success with the third specified number of consecutive blocks of trials of the category at a lowest stage, returning the person to an initiation process.

32. The method of claim 12, wherein said conducting the plurality of blocks of trials comprises:

when all categories are closed at a current level of processing, incrementing the level of processing.

33. The method of claim 32, wherein the level of processing is incremented only after the person has progressed through at least two stages at the level of processing.

34. The method of claim 10, wherein each trial is invoked by the person via a graphical user interface (GUI).

35. The method of claim 1, wherein said conducting a plurality of blocks of trials comprises:

performing said conducting with respect to more difficult sequences until a specified performance level is achieved by the person.

36. The method of claim 1, wherein the plurality of sequences of auditory instructions comprises:

a first set of sequences directed to stimulus discrimination; and

a second set of sequences directed to memory; and

wherein said performing said repeating with respect to more difficult sequences until a specified performance level is achieved by the person is performed with respect to sequences directed to stimulus discrimination and sequences directed to memory independently.

37. The method of claim 1, wherein graphical objects displayed with respect to a sequence of instructions comprise a confusable superset of objects referred to in the instructions.

38. The method of claim 1, wherein graphical objects displayed with respect to a sequence of instructions comprise moveable foreground objects and non-moveable background objects.

39. The method of claim 1, wherein said indicating whether the person correctly performed the sequence of actions comprises one or more of:

presenting a respective sound indicating correctness or incorrectness;

presenting a respective graphical indication of correctness or incorrectness; and

awarding points.

40. The method of claim 39, wherein said presenting a graphical indication comprises:

if the person correctly performed the sequence of actions, performing one or more of;

revealing at least a portion of a reward image on the display; and

presenting an animation on the display.

41. The method of claim 1, wherein the auditory instructions are presented via headphones attached to the computing device.

42. The method of claim 1, wherein for each sequence of instructions, no instruction is presented twice in a row.

43. The method of claim 1, wherein the sequences of instructions relate to one or more of:

making a machine;

following a recipe; and

manipulating people and objects in a scene.

44. The method of claim 1, wherein said repeating is performed a specified number times each day, for a specified number of days.

45. The method of claim 1, wherein the person is an elderly adult.

46. A computer accessible memory medium comprising program instructions for enhancing memory and cognition in a person, wherein the program instructions are executable to implement:

presenting a sequence of one or more auditory instructions processed by the computer, the auditory instructions indicating a corresponding sequence of actions to be performed by the person, wherein the actions comprise manipulations of graphical objects displayed on a display of a computing device;

receiving input from the person, wherein the input manipulates the graphical objects on the display;

determining if the person has correctly performed the sequence of actions;

indicating whether the person has correctly performed the sequence of actions; and

repeating said presenting, said receiving, said determining, and said indicating with respect to each of a plurality of sequences of auditory instructions in an iterative manner to improve the person'"'"'s ability to process auditory instructions.
