Abstract

A backlight display has improved display characteristics. An image is displayed on the display which includes a liquid crystal material with a light valve. The display receives an image signal, modifies the light valve with an overdrive for a first region of the image based upon the timing of the illumination of the region, and modifies the light valve with an overdrive for a second region of the image based upon the timing of the illumination of the second region.

Claims

1. A method for displaying an image on a liquid crystal display including a light valve comprising:

(a) receiving an image signal;

(b) modifying said light valve with an overdrive for a first region of said image based upon a timing of an illumination of said region; and

(c) modifying said light valve with an overdrive for a second region of said image based upon a timing of an illumination of said second region.

2. The method of claim 1 wherein said display includes a single backlight.

3. The method of claim 1 wherein said display includes a plurality of backlights.

4. The method of claim 3 wherein said first region and said second region are generally consistent with regions of said backlights.

5. The method of claim 1 wherein said first region and said second region are within a region generally consistent with a single backlight element.

6. The method of claim 5 wherein said display includes a plurality of backlights.

7. The method of claim 3 wherein said plurality of backlights are illuminated in a temporally spaced manner during a frame.

8. The method of claim 1 wherein said display is illuminated with a plurality of backlights in a temporally spaced manner during a frame.

9. A method for displaying an image on a display including a light valve comprising:

(a) receiving an image signal; and

(b) modifying a first pixel of said light valve with an overdrive signal for said first pixel of said light valve changing from a first value to a second value that is different than an overdrive signal for a second pixel of said light value changing from a first state to a second state, wherein said display includes a plurality of light emitting diodes forming a backlight providing light to said light valve.

10. The method of claim 9 wherein said overdrive signal is based upon addressing timing of an illumination of a respective said light emitting diode.

11. A method for displaying an image on a display including a light valve comprising:

(a) receiving an image signal; and

(b) modifying a first pixel of said light value with an overdrive signal for said first pixel of said light valve changing from a first value to a second value that is different than an overdrive signal for a second pixel of said light value changing from a first state to a second state, wherein said first pixel and said second pixel are illuminated simultaneously.

12. The method of claim 11 wherein said display includes a plurality of separate backlight regions illuminated at different times during a frame.

13. A method for displaying an image on a liquid crystal display including a light valve comprising:

(a) receiving an image signal;

(b) modifying said light valve with an overdrive for a first pixel within a region of said image based upon a timing of an illumination of said region;

(c) modifying said light valve with an overdrive for a second pixel of said region of said image based upon a timing of an illumination of said region; and

(d) simultaneously illuminating said first pixel and said second pixel while not illuminating at least one other pixel of said display.
