1. A touch panel device comprising:

  • a substrate;

    a plurality of excitation elements, disposed on two facing sides of a quadrilateral detection range defined on said substrate, for respectively exciting surface acoustic waves; and

    a plurality of receiving elements, disposed on the other two facing sides of said detection range, for respectively receiving surface acoustic waves, said touch panel device being characterized by;

    transmitting surface acoustic waves from the respective plurality of excitation elements in two diagonal directions respectively, and receiving the surface acoustic waves from the two diagonal directions by the respective plurality of receiving elements, thus propagating surface acoustic waves across said substrate, between the facing excitation elements and receiving elements; and

    detecting a position of an object in contact with said substrate, based on received results in said receiving elements.
