Abstract

A wireless communication system includes a base station that receives information regarding neighboring wireless systems and updates and stores this information for use in handover of user equipments (UEs).

Claims

1. In a wireless communication system, a method for updating a system database of a base station based on information sent by a user equipment (UE), comprising:

sending information to the base station when the UE detects a neighboring wireless system that uses a radio access technology different from the wireless communication system, and

updating the system database with information sent by multiple user equipments which have detected the neighboring wireless system, wherein the information from the multiple user equipments include geo-locations which form a basis for approximating the coverage area of the neighboring system.

2. The method of claim 1, further comprising the base station verifying the integrity of the information transmitted by any UE.

3. The method of claim 1, further comprising:

the UE receiving traffic loading information from the neighboring system; and

updating the system database at the base station to include traffic loading information of neighboring system.

4. The method of claim 1, where the UE sends information which includes signal power levels of the neighboring system.

5. The method of claim 1, where the UE sends the geo-location information responsive to being authenticated by the base station.

6. The method of claim 1, where the UE transmits the geo-location information together with a message authentication code.

7. The method of claim 1, where the UE encrypts information sent to the base station.

8. A wireless communication system having multiple user equipments (UEs), comprising:

a base station that includes a system database; and

a first UE configured to send information when it detects a neighboring wireless system which uses a radio access technology that is different than the wireless communication system, wherein the system database is configured to be updated based on the information sent by the first UE;

wherein the system database is configured to be updated with information sent by the multiple user equipments which have detected the neighboring wireless system, wherein the information from the multiple user equipments include geo-locations which form a basis for an approximation of the coverage area of the neighboring system.

9. The system of claim 8, wherein the base station is configured to verify the integrity of the information transmitted by any UE.

10. The system of claim 8, further comprising:

the UE receiving traffic loading information from the neighboring system; and

updating the system database at the base station to include traffic loading information of neighboring system.

11. The system of claim 8, where said UE sends information which includes signal power levels of the neighboring system.

12. The system of claim 8, where the UE sends the geo-location information responsive to being authenticated by the base station.

13. The system of claim 8, where the UE transmits the geo-location information together with a message authentication code.

14. The system of claim 8, where the UE encrypts information sent to the base station.
