Abstract

Methods and apparatus for initiating a PTT call from a caller client device to a recipient client device. The methods and apparatus register the caller client device with the PTT system, wherein caller data identifying the caller client device is transmitted to the PTT system; store the caller data; generate, at the caller client device, a channel request message comprising channel allocation data and call invite messaging information; transmit the channel request message to the PTT system; parse the call invite messaging information from the channel request message; generate a call invite message based upon the call invite messaging information and the stored caller data; and establish the PTT call between the caller client device and the recipient client device based upon the call invite message. Additionally, the call invite messaging information includes an identification number and not the URI of the recipient client device.

Claims

1. In a cellular network having a push-to-talk (PTT) system, a method for initiating a PTT call from a caller client device to a recipient client device, comprising the steps of:

registering the caller client device with the PTT system, wherein caller data identifying the caller client device is transmitted to the PTT system;

storing the caller data;

generating, at the caller client device, a channel request message comprising channel allocation data and call invite messaging information;

transmitting the channel request message to the PTT system;

parsing the call invite messaging information from the channel request message;

generating a call invite message based upon the call invite messaging information and the stored caller data;

establishing the PTT call between the caller client device and the recipient client device based upon the call invite message.

2. The method recited in claim 1, further comprising the steps of:

providing a push-to-talk (PTT) service server, a system server, and a router in the PTT system;

wherein the registering step registers the caller client device with the service server; and

wherein the caller data is stored at the service server.

3. The method recited in claim 2, further comprising the steps of:

transmitting the channel request message from the caller client device to the router;

transmitting the parsed call invite messaging information to the service server; and

transmitting the call invite message from the service server to the system server.

4. The method recited in claim 2, wherein the call invite message is a SIP Invite message.

5. The method recited in claim 1, wherein the call invite messaging information is based upon SIP.

6. The method recited in claim 1, wherein the call invite messaging information in the registration request message is in a binary format.

7. The method recited in claim 1, further comprising the steps of:

generating a contact list containing the universal resource identifier (URI) of the recipient client device and a corresponding identification number, wherein the identification number is smaller in size than the URI;

transmitting the contact list to the caller client device from the PTT system; and

storing the contact list in the caller client device;

wherein the call invite messaging information includes the identification number and not the URI of the recipient client device.

8. An apparatus for performing push-to-talk (PTT) communications over a wireless network, comprising:

a push-to-talk (PTT) server configured to communicate with user equipment over a wireless link, the PTT server including an application server and a call session control function (CSCF);

wherein the CSCF is configured to store caller identifying data received from the user equipment when registering the user equipment for PTT communications;

wherein the CSCF is configured to receive from the user equipment call invite messaging information during establishment of a communications channel;

wherein the CSCF is configured to generate a call invite message based upon the call invite messaging information and the stored caller data; and

wherein the application server establishes the PTT communications based upon the call invite message.

9. The apparatus recited in claim 8, further comprising:

user equipment configured to generate a channel request message comprising registration request data and call invite messaging information and transmit the channel request message to the CSCF.

10. The apparatus recited in claim 9, further comprising the steps of:

a router in wireless communication with the user equipment;

wherein the router is configured to parse the call invite messaging information from within the channel request message and transmit the call invite messaging information to the CSCF.

11. The apparatus recited in claim 10, wherein the call invite messaging information is at least a portion of a SIP Invite message in binary format.

12. The apparatus recited in claim 8, wherein the call invite message is a SIP Invite message.

13. The improved method recited in claim 8, further comprising the steps of:

wherein the PTT server is further comprising a list management function configured to generate a contact list containing the universal resource identifier (URI) of a recipient and a corresponding identification number, wherein the identification number is smaller in size than the URI;

wherein the user equipment is configured to request and store the contact list from the PTT server; and

wherein the call invite messaging information includes the identification number and not the URI of the recipient.

14. In a cellular network having a push-to-talk (PTT) system, a caller client device for initiating a PTT call to a recipient client device, comprising:

means for registering the caller client device with the PTT system, wherein caller data identifying the caller client device is transmitted to the PTT system;

means for generating a channel request message comprising channel allocation data and call invite messaging information, wherein the call invite messaging is embedded in the channel request message; and

means for transmitting the channel request message to the PTT system.

15. The device recited in claim 14, further comprising the steps of:

means for transmitting the channel request message from the caller client device to the router.

16. The device recited in claim 14, wherein the call invite messaging information in the channel request message is at least a portion of a SIP Invite message in binary format.

17. The device recited in claim 15, further comprising the steps of:

means for requesting a contact list from the PTT system;

means for receiving a contact list containing the universal resource identifier (URI) of the recipient client device and a corresponding identification number, wherein the identification number is smaller in size than the URI; and

means for storing the contact list;

wherein the means for generating includes the identification number and not the URI of the recipient client device the call invite messaging information.
