Abstract

A food intake restriction device for forming a restriction in a patient'"'"'s gastro-intestinal tract and non-invasively communicating pressure data regarding the restriction to an external monitor. The device includes a food intake restriction device implanted substantially about a patient'"'"'s gastro-intestinal tract to form a restricted opening in the tract. A port is connected to the restriction device. The port contains a working fluid for affecting the size of the restricted opening. A pressure sensing system communicates with the working fluid to measure the pressure of the working fluid. A transmitter communicates the measured fluid pressure to the external monitor.

Claims

1. A method for non-invasively recording fluid pressure data for an implanted food intake restriction device, said method comprising the steps of:

implanting a food intake restriction device in the gastro-intestinal tract of a patient;

using a working fluid in the restriction device to form a restricted opening in the gastro-intestinal tract;

determining the pressure in the restricted opening by measuring the pressure of the working fluid using a pressure sensor in communication with the working fluid;

placing an external monitor adjacent the pressure sensor; and

transmitting the measured pressure data from the pressure sensor to the external monitor.

2. The method of claim 1, wherein the pressure determining step further comprises:

providing a fluid reservoir in fluid communication with the restriction device;

mechanically deflecting a surface of the pressure sensor in response to pressure changes in the working fluid in the reservoir; and

converting the mechanical deflections of the sensor surface into the measured pressure data.

3. The method of claim 2, further comprising the steps of:

transferring fluid between the fluid reservoir and the restriction device to adjust the restricted opening;

measuring the deflection of the pressure sensor surface while adjusting the restricted opening; and

transmitting the measured pressure data to the external monitor during the restricted opening adjustment.

4. The method of claim 2, further comprising the step of forming a closed hydraulic circuit between the restriction device and an implanted port to enable fluid to be displaced between the restriction device and the port to affect the restricted opening.

5. The method of claim 2, wherein the converting step further comprises:

attaching a variable resistance element to the surface of the pressure sensor;

measuring the differential voltage across the variable resistance; and

converting the differential voltage into the measured pressured data.

6. The method of claim 5, wherein the transmitting step further comprises transmitting the measured pressure data using an RF telemetry signal.

7. The method of claim 2, wherein the converting step further comprises:

attaching a variable capacitance capacitor to the surface of the pressure sensor;

incorporating the variable capacitance into an LC resonant circuit; and

converting the changes in resonant frequency of the circuit into the measured pressure data.

8. The method of claim 7, wherein the transmitting step further comprises magnetically coupling the resonant circuit to an inducing coil in the external monitor, and using the inducing coil to measure the variation in the resonant frequency of the circuit to determine the fluid pressure.

9. The method of claim 2, wherein the converting step further comprises:

providing an inductance coil adjacent the deformable surface of the pressure sensor;

varying the inductance of the coil in response to pressure changes in the working fluid;

incorporating the inductance coil into a resonant circuit; and

converting changes in resonant frequency of the circuit into the measured pressure data.

10. The method of claim 9, wherein the transmitting step further comprises magnetically coupling the resonant circuit to an inducing coil in the external monitor, and using the inducing coil to measure the variation in the resonant frequency of the circuit to determine the fluid pressure.

11. The method of claim 1, further comprising the step of using the transmitted pressure data to monitor operation of the restriction device.

12. The method of claim 11, wherein the measured pressure data is used to detect a working fluid leak in the restriction device.

13. The method of claim 11, wherein the measured pressure data is used to detect a blockage in the restriction device.

14. The method of claim 1, further comprising the step of displaying the measured pressure data on an external display.

15. A food intake restriction system for forming a restriction in a patient'"'"'s gastro-intestinal tract and non-invasively communicating pressure data regarding the restriction to an external monitor, the system comprising:

a food intake restriction device implanted to form a restriction in a patient'"'"'s gastro-intestinal tract;

an implanted port connected to the restriction device, the port containing a working fluid for affecting the size of the restriction in the gastro-intestinal tract; and

a pressure sensing system in communication with the working fluid for measuring the pressure of the working fluid and transmitting pressure measurement data to the external monitor.

16. The food intake restriction system of claim 15, wherein the pressure of the working fluid is proportional to the degree of restriction formed in the gastro-intestinal tract.

17. The food intake restriction system of claim 16, wherein the pressure sensing system includes a mechanically deformable surface in contact with the working fluid, and wherein the surface deforms in proportion to the pressure of the working fluid.

18. The food intake restriction system of claim 17, wherein the mechanical deformations of the surface are converted into an electrical signal indicative of the pressure within the working fluid.

19. The food intake restriction system of claim 18, wherein the pressure sensing system comprises two or more variable resistance elements attached to the deformable surface, the resistance of the elements varying in response to the mechanical deformations of the surface;

and wherein the resistance elements are connected in an electrical circuit, the output of the circuit providing a measurement of the working fluid pressure.

20. The food intake restriction system of claim 19, further comprising a tuned tank circuit in the port for non-invasively transmitting the pressure measurement data from the variable resistance circuit to the external monitor.

21. The food intake restriction system of claim 18, wherein the pressure sensing system includes a variable capacitance capacitor, the capacitance of the capacitor varying in response to pressure changes in the working fluid, the variation in the capacitance providing a measurement of the working fluid pressure.

22. The food intake restriction system of claim 18, wherein the working fluid is transferable between the port and the restriction device in a closed fluid circuit to affect the size of the gastro-intestinal restriction.

23. The food intake restriction system of claim 18, wherein the pressure sensing system measures the working fluid pressure and transmits the pressure measurement data to the external monitor during an adjustment of the food intake restriction device.

24. The food intake restriction system of claim 18, wherein the pressure sensing system includes a variable inductance coil adjacent the deformable surface, the inductance of the coil varying in response to pressure changes in the working fluid, the variation in inductance providing a measurement of the working fluid pressure.

25. An implanted bariatric treatment device for forming a food intake restriction in a patient'"'"'s gastro-intestinal tract and communicating the pressure of the restriction to an external monitor, the device comprising:

a restriction member implanted in contact with the patient'"'"'s stomach, the restriction member having a variable fluid volume for creating a food intake restriction in the stomach;

a control operatively connected to the restriction member for varying the volume of the restriction member; and

a pressure sensing system for measuring fluid pressure within the restriction member and non-invasively communicating the measured pressure to the external monitor, the measured pressure being proportional to the degree of restriction formed in the stomach.
