Abstract

This invention relates to a bone implant that includes a bioinert substrate covered with a ceramic layer containing a plurality of indentations. The total surface area of the indentations is 30-70% of the total surface area of the ceramic layer. This invention also relates to a method of preparing such a bone implant. The method includes: (1) affixing a ceramic layer on the surface of a bioinert substrate; (2) forming a plurality of indentations in the ceramic layer, wherein the total surface area of the indentations is 30-70% of the total surface area of the ceramic layer; and (3) immobilizing a biopolymer onto the ceramic layer via covalent bonding.

Claims

1. A bone implant, comprising a bioinert substrate covered with a ceramic layer containing a plurality of indentations, wherein the total surface area of the indentations is 30-70% of the total surface area of the ceramic layer.

2. The bone implant of claim 1, wherein the total surface area of the indentations is 50-60% of the total surface area of the ceramic layer.

3. The bone implant of claim 2, wherein a first portion of the surface of the bioinert substrate has small ridges having widths of 10-30 μ

m and heights of 10-30 μ

m and a second portion of the surface of the bioinert substrate has large ridges having widths of 60-100 μ

m and heights of 40-80 μ

m.

4. The bone implant of claim 3, wherein the small ridges have widths of 15-20 μ

m and heights of 15-20 μ

m, and the large ridges have widths of 70-90 μ

m and heights of 50-70 μ

m.

5. The bone implant of claim 4, wherein the ceramic layer covers the second portion of the surface, but not the first portion of the surface.

6. The bone implant of claim 5, further comprising a biopolymer covalently bonded to the surface of the ceramic layer.

7. The bone implant of claim 6, wherein the biopolymer is a collagen-based biopolymer.

8. The bone implant of claim 7, wherein the bioinert substrate is titanium alloy based.

9. The bone implant of claim 8, further comprising a layer of metal oxides disposed between the ceramic layer and the bioinert substrate.

10. The bone implant of claim 9, further comprising a bone formation promoter covalently bonded to the ceramic layer.

11. The bone implant of claim 1, wherein a first portion of the surface of the bioinert substrate has small ridges having widths of 10-30 μ

m and heights of 10-30 μ

m and a second portion of the surface of the bioinert substrate has large ridges having widths of 60-100 μ

m and heights of 40-80 μ

m.

12. The bone implant of claim 11, wherein the small ridges have widths of 15-20 μ

m and heights of 15-20 μ

m, and the large ridges have widths of 70-90 μ

m and heights of 50-70 μ

m.

13. The bone implant of claim 12, wherein the ceramic layer covers the second portion of the surface, but not the first portion of the surface.

14. The bone implant of claim 1, further comprising a biopolymer covalently bonded to the surface of the ceramic layer.

15. The bone implant of claim 14, wherein the biopolymer is a collagen-based biopolymer.

16. The bone implant of claim 15, further comprising a bone formation promoter covalently bonded to the ceramic layer.

17. The bone implant of claim 1, wherein the bioinert substrate is titanium alloy based.

18. The bone implant of claim 17, further comprising a layer of metal oxides disposed between the ceramic layer and the bioinert substrate.

19. A method of preparing a bone implant, comprising:

affixing a ceramic layer on the surface of a bioinert substrate;

forming a plurality of indentations in the ceramic layer, wherein the total surface area of the indentations is 30-70% of the total surface area of the ceramic layer; and

immobilizing a biopolymer onto the ceramic layer via covalent bonding.

20. The method of claim 19, further comprising forming small ridges having widths of 10-30 μ

m and heights of 10-30 μ

m on a first portion of the surface of the bioinert substrate and forming large ridges having widths of 60-100 μ

m and heights of 40-80 μ

m on a second portion of the surface of the bioinert substrate before the affixing step.

21. The method of claim 19, wherein the ceramic layer covers the second portion of the surface, but not the first portion of the surface.

22. The method of claim 19, wherein the biopolymer is a collagen-based biopolymer.

23. The method of claim 19, wherein the bioinert substrate is titanium alloy based.
