Abstract

A method of creating alerts in a database system is disclosed. The method may include allowing the selection of at least one field or record to be monitored, determining the data in a database that affects the value of the selected field or record, storing a trigger related to the data determined to affect the value of the selected field or record wherein the trigger communicates if the data is accessed and creating a notification of the communication of the trigger.

Claims

1. A method of creating alerts in a database system comprising:

allowing the selection of at least one field or record to be monitored;

determining the data in a database that affects the value of the selected field or record;

storing a trigger related to the data determined to affect the value of the selected field or record wherein the trigger communicates if the data is accessed; and

creating a notification of the communication of the trigger.

2. The method of claim 1, further comprising allowing the selection of the field or record from a form used to display the field

3. The method of claim 1, further comprising allowing a user to view the accessed field or record in a form by selecting the notification of the accessed field or record.

4. The method of claim 3, wherein the form is one of the form used to create the alert and a default form for the selected field or record.

5. The method for claim 1, further comprising allowing time to be used as a condition for triggering an alert.

6. The method of claim 1, further comprising allowing access related information to be displayed by selecting the notification of the communication of the trigger.

7. The method of claim 1, further comprising allowing a previously created alert rule to be used as a template to create a new alert rule.

8. A computing apparatus, comprising:

a display unit that is capable of generating video images;

an input device;

a processing apparatus operatively coupled to said display unit and said input device, said processing apparatus comprising a processor and a memory operatively coupled to said processor,

a network interface connected to a network and to the processing apparatus;

said processing apparatus being programmed to;

allow the selection of at least one field or record to be monitored;

determine the data in a database that affects the value of the selected field or record;

store a trigger related to the data determined to affect the value of the selected field or record wherein the trigger communicates if the data is accessed; and

create a notification of the communication of the trigger.

9. The computing apparatus of claim 8, the processing apparatus being further programmed to allow the selection of the field or record from a form used to display the field or record

10. The computing apparatus of claim 9, the processing apparatus being further programmed to allow a user to view the selected field or record in a form by selecting the notification of the accessed data.

11. The computing apparatus of claim 10, wherein the form is one of the form used to create the alert and a default form for the selected field or record.

12. The computing apparatus of claim 8, the processing apparatus being further programmed to allow time to be used as a condition for triggering an alert.

13. The computing apparatus of claim 8, the processing apparatus being further programmed to allow access related information to be displayed by selecting the notification of the communication of the trigger.

14. The computing apparatus of claim 8, the processing apparatus being further programmed to allow a previously created alert rule to be used as a template to create a new alert rule.

15. A computer readable medium having computer executable instructions for performing a method of creating alerts in a database system comprising:

computer executable instructions for allowing the selection of at least one field or record to be monitored;

computer executable instructions for determining the data in a database that affects the value of the selected field or record;

computer executable instructions for storing a trigger related to the data determined to affect the value of the selected field or record wherein the trigger communicates if the data is accessed; and

computer executable instructions for creating a notification of the communication of the trigger.

The computer readable medium of claim 15, further comprising computer executable instructions for allowing the selection of the field or record from a form used to display the field or record and allowing a user to view the selected field or record in a form by selecting the notification of the communication of the trigger.

17. The computer readable medium of claim 16, wherein the form is one of the form used to create the alert and a default form for the selected field or record.

18. The computer readable medium of claim 15, further comprising computer executable instructions for allowing access related information to be displayed by selecting the notification of the communication of the trigger.

19. The computer readable medium of claim 15, further comprising computer executable instructions for allowing time to be used as a condition for triggering an alert.

20. The computer readable medium of claim 15, further comprising computer executable instructions for allowing a previously created alert rule to be used as a template to create a new alert rule.
