Abstract

Targeted content may be provided to a designated set of one or more interconnected resources. Programmatic operations are executed using resources that are private to the one or more interconnected devices. The operations, when executed, cause or result in (i) monitoring activities of one or more users of the designated set; (ii) developing profile information of the one or more users, where the profile information is based at least partially on information determined from monitoring activities of the one or more users; (iii) generating, from the profile information, a set of coded data that represent selection criteria; and (iv) communicating the set of coded data to a programmatic source external to the system, where the represented selection criteria enables programmatic selection of content resources from a content library for the system.

Claims

1. A method for providing targeted content to a designated set of one or more interconnected computing resources, the method comprising:

executing programmatic operations using resources that are private to the one or more connected devices, the executed operations including;

monitoring activities of one or more users of the designated set;

developing profile information of the one or more users, wherein the profile information is based at least in part on information determined from monitoring activities of the one or more users;

generating, from the profile information, a set of coded data that represent selection criteria;

communicating the set of coded data to a programmatic source external to the system, wherein when decoded, the represented selection criteria enables programmatic selection of content resources from a content library for the system.

2. The method of claim 1, wherein generating the set of coded data includes generating a set of parameters that identify selection criteria, and wherein the set of parameters can be identified as the selection criteria through use of a parameter reference resource.

3. The method of claim 1, wherein communicating the set of coded data includes querying a content resource management system for content resources that match against the represented selection criteria.

4. The method of claim 1, wherein monitoring activities of one or more users on a system includes monitoring one or more activities selected from a group consisting of:

(i) web browsing activities, (ii) media rendering activities, (iii) channel selection for television, (iv) Digital Video Recorder (DVR) selections, and (v) online purchases.

5. The method of claim 4, wherein web browsing activities includes (i) bookmark selection, (ii) downloading, and (iii) web page viewing.

6. The method of claim 4, wherein media rendering activities include music and video playback.

7. The method of claim 5, wherein media rendering activities include play-list selection and streaming media reception.

8. The method of claim 1, wherein generating, from the profile information, a set of coded data that represent selection criteria includes processing a set of heuristics that in order to make determinations of selection criteria.

The method of claim 8, wherein processing a set of heuristics that in order to make determinations of selection criteria includes receiving heuristic model information from a source external to the system, and determining parameters that correspond to results of heuristic determinations made through use of the heuristic model information.

10. The method of claim 9, wherein communicating the set of coded data includes communicating the parameters that correspond to results of heuristic determinations.

11. The method of claim 1, wherein developing profile information includes developing information through input provided by the user.

12. A system for enabling targeted content to be delivered to one or more interconnected devices that comprise a designated set for one or more users, the system comprising:

a profile engine configured to build one or more profiles of one or more users of the designated set;

a content requestor component that communicates a set of coded data to a programmatic source that is external to the designated set, wherein the set of coded data represents selection criteria determined from the one or more profiles, and wherein when the set of coded data is decoded by the external programmatic source, the represented selection criteria enables programmatic selection of content resources from a content library for the system.

13. The system of claim 12, wherein the profile engine is configured to observe activities on the designated, and the build the one or more profiles using, at least in part, information determined from the observed activities.

14. The system of claim 13, further comprising a profile data store containing data received from or about the one or more users, and wherein the profile engine is configured to build the one or more profiles using, in part, data from the profile store.

15. The system of claim 12, further comprising a heuristic engine that uses a heuristic model to generate the set of coded data from the one or more profiles.

16. The system of claim 15, wherein the heuristic model is created at least in part using heuristic model data received from an external source.

17. A system for enabling targeted content to be delivered to one or more interconnected devices that comprise a designated set, the system comprising:

a heuristic engine that is configured to;

receive heuristic model information to identify a set of heuristics;

identify profile information from the one or more users;

make a series of heuristic determinations using the identified profile information and the set of heuristics;

generate a coded data set based on the series of heuristic determinations; and

a content requester module configured to generate a request for content that is selected based on the coded data set.

18. A method for enabling targeted content to be delivered to one or more interconnected devices that comprise a designated set, the method comprising:

receiving heuristic model data to identify a set of heuristics;

identifying profile information from the one or more users;

making a series of heuristic determinations using the identified profile information and the set of heuristics; and

generating coded data set based on the series of heuristic determinations.

19. The method of claim 18, further comprising formulating a request for content that is selected based on the coded data set.

20. The method of claim 18, wherein receiving heuristic model data includes receiving updates to the heuristic model data.
