Abstract

Techniques for detecting, managing, and presenting syndication XML (feeds) are disclosed. In one embodiment, a web browser automatically determines that a web site is publishing feeds and notifies the user, who can then access the feed easily. In another embodiment, a browser determines that a web page or feed is advertising relationship XML, and displays information about the people identified in the relationship XML. In yet another embodiment, a browser determines that a file contains a feed and enables the user to view it in a user-friendly way. In yet another embodiment, feed state information is stored in a repository that is accessible by applications that are used to view the feed. In yet another embodiment, if a feed'"'"'s state changes, an application notifies the repository, and the state is updated. In yet another embodiment, a feed is parsed and stored in a structured way.

Claims

1. A method for determining whether a file contains a feed, comprising determining, by a web browser, a file name extension of the file.

2. The method of claim 1, wherein the file name extension is determined based on a Uniform Resource Locator.

3. The method of claim 1, wherein the file name extension does not indicate that the file contains a feed.

4. The method of claim 3, further comprising modifying, by the web browser, the file name extension responsive to a determination that the file contains the feed.

5. The method of claim 1, further comprising:

receiving, by the web browser, a search query; and

displaying, by the web browser, at least one item from the feed that satisfies the search query,

responsive to a determination that the file contains the feed.

6. The method of claim 1, further comprising:

receiving, by the web browser, a first user input indicating the feed;

receiving, by the web browser, a second user input indicating an identifier; and

storing, by the web browser, an association between the feed and the identifier,

responsive to a determination that the file contains the feed.

7. The method of claim 1, further comprising displaying, by the web browser, the feed responsive to a determination that that the file contains the feed.

8. The method of claim 7, wherein the feed comprises a plurality of feed items, and further comprising:

receiving, by the web browser, a search query; and

removing, by the web browser, from display, at least one feed item that does not satisfy the search query.

9. A method for determining whether a file contains a feed, comprising determining, by a web browser, a Multipurpose Internet Mail Extension type of the file.

10. The method of claim 9, wherein the Multipurpose Internet Mail Extension type is determined based on a HyperText Transfer Protocol header.

11. The method of claim 9, wherein the Multipurpose Internet Mail Extension type does not indicate that the file contains a feed.

12. The method of claim 11, further comprising modifying, by the web browser, the Multipurpose Internet Mail Extension type responsive to a determination that the file contains the feed.

13. The method of claim 9, further comprising displaying, by the web browser, the feed responsive to a determination that that the file contains the feed.

14. A method for determining whether a file contains a feed, comprising determining, by a web browser, content of the file.

15. The method of claim 14, wherein determining, by the web browser, content of the file comprises determining, by the web browser, whether the file includes one HyperText Markup Language element of a group containing “

feed”

, “

rss”

, and “

atom.”

16. The method of claim 14, wherein determining, by the web browser, content of the file comprises determining, by the web browser, content of the file responsive to a determination that a MIME type of the file cannot be determined.

17. The method of claim 14, wherein determining, by the web browser, content of the file comprises determining, by the web browser, content of the file responsive to a determination that a MIME type of the file is “

text/plain.”

18. The method of claim 14, further comprising displaying, by the web browser, the feed responsive to a determination that that the file contains the feed.

19. A computer program product for determining whether a file contains a feed, the computer program product comprising a computer-readable medium, the computer-readable medium comprising:

program code for determining, by a web browser, a file name extension of the file;

program code for determining, by the web browser, a Multipurpose Internet Mail Extension type of the file; and

program code for determining, by the web browser, content of the file.

20. A web browser for determining whether a file contains a feed, comprising:

a file name extension module configured to determine a file name extension of the file;

a MIME type module configured to determine a Multipurpose Internet Mail Extension type of the file; and

a content module configured to determine content of the file.
