1. Personnel scanning apparatus for detecting and assisting in identifying certain categories of non-physiologic objects/materials being carried by a person comprising a defined personnel scanning zone, a microwave transmission/reception (TR) element having a transmission/reception operational axis, supported adjacent said zone with its axis aimed into the zone, and for selective reciprocal motion relative to the zone along its said axis, first circuitry operatively connected to said TR element, functional to effect operation of the element in a scanning phase simultaneously in transmission and reception modes of operation, whereby the element transmits microwave energy into, and is enabled to receive any such energy reflected from, said zone, and selectively reversible motor structure operatively and drivingly interposed said zone and said TR element, activatable selectively and reversibly during a scanning phase to shift said element in one of two selected, generally linear, reverse directions along the element'"'"'s axis so as to shift the element selectively toward or away from said zone.
