Abstract

An improved system and method are disclosed for peer-to-peer communications. In one example, the method enables a conference session to be established by an endpoint and then controlled by the endpoint using direct signaling with other endpoints.

Claims

1. A method for execution by a first endpoint to establish a conference session in a peer-to-peer hybrid network comprising:

requesting that a conference session be established on a host;

receiving information needed to connect to the conference session;

joining the conference session on the host using the information; and

sending at least a portion of the information to second and third endpoints so that the second and third endpoints can join the conference session on the host using the portion of the information, wherein the first endpoint sends signaling information for the conference session directly to the second and third endpoints, and wherein the first endpoint receives signaling information for the conference session directly from the second and third endpoints.

2. The method of claim 1 further comprising:

receiving a message directly from the second endpoint indicating that the second endpoint is leaving the conference session; and

informing the third endpoint that the second endpoint has left the conference session.

The method of claim 1 wherein requesting that the conference session be established includes sending the request to a conference controller coupled to the host, wherein the conference controller communicates with the host to set up the conference session and responds to the first endpoint after the conference session is established.

4. The method of claim 3 wherein, of the first, second, and third endpoints, only the first endpoint communicates with the conference controller during the conference session.

5. The method of claim 1 further comprising sending a message directly from the first endpoint to the second and third endpoints instructing the first and second endpoints to disconnect from the host.

6. The method of claim 1 wherein sending at least a portion of the information to the second and third endpoints includes sending an invitation directly from the first endpoint to each of the second and third endpoints to join the conference session.

7. The method of claim 6 further comprising receiving a response to the invitation directly from the second and third endpoints.

8. A peer-to-peer hybrid system for a conference session comprising:

a first endpoint coupled to second and third endpoints;

a host coupled to the first, second, and third endpoints; and

a plurality of instructions for establishing and maintaining the conference session, including instructions for;

establishing a conference session on the host at the request of the first endpoint;

sending a message directly from the first endpoint to the second and third endpoints inviting the second and third endpoints to join the conference session;

routing conference session media traffic between the first, second, and third endpoints

via the host; and

sending signaling messages for the conference session directly from the first endpoint to the second and third endpoints and directly from the second and third endpoints to the first endpoint.

9. The system of claim 8 further comprising a conference controller coupled to the first endpoint and the host, wherein the instructions for establishing the conference session include instructions for:

sending a request for the conference session from the first endpoint to the conference controller;

sending a request for the conference session from the conference controller to the host;

sending a response to the conference controller'"'"'s request from the host to the conference controller; and

sending a response to the first endpoint'"'"'s request from the conference controller to the first endpoint based on the response received by the conference controller from the host.

10. The system of claim 9 wherein, of the first, second, and third endpoints, only the first endpoint communicates with the conference controller during the conference session.

11. The system of claim 9 wherein the conference controller and the host are combined in a single device.

12. The system of claim 8 further comprising instructions for:

sending a notification directly from the second endpoint to the first endpoint that the second endpoint is leaving the conference session; and

sending a notification directly from the first endpoint to the third endpoint that the second endpoint has left the conference session.

13. The system of claim 12 further comprising instructions for sending a notification from the second endpoint to the host that the second endpoint is leaving the conference session.

14. The system of claim 8 further comprising instructions for:

determining, by the second endpoint, whether the first endpoint has dropped from the conference session; and

sending a notification from the second endpoint to the host that the second endpoint is leaving the conference session if the first endpoint has dropped.

15. The system of claim 8 further comprising instructions for sending a notification directly from the first endpoint to the second and third endpoints that the first endpoint is leaving the conference session.

16. A method for conducting a conference session in a peer-to-peer hybrid network comprising:

establishing, by a first endpoint, a conference session on a host;

joining, by the first endpoint, the conference session; and

sending an invitation to join the conference session from the first endpoint directly to second and third endpoints, wherein signaling information during the conference session is sent from the first endpoint directly to the second and third endpoints, and wherein media traffic for the conference session is sent by each endpoint through the host.

17. The method of claim 16 further comprising:

sending a notification from the second endpoint directly to the first endpoint that the second endpoint is leaving the conference session; and

sending a notification from the first endpoint directly to the third endpoint that the second endpoint has left the conference session.

18. The method of claim 16 further comprising:

detecting, by the second endpoint, whether the first endpoint has dropped from the call; and

informing the host that the second endpoint is leaving the call if the first endpoint has dropped.

19. The method of claim 16 wherein establishing the conference session on the host includes:

sending a request for the conference session from the first endpoint; and

receiving information corresponding to the conference session at the first endpoint, wherein the information includes a port and address for the conference session.

20. The method of claim 19 wherein sending the invitation to join the conference session from the first endpoint directly to the second and third endpoints includes sending the port and address information.
