Abstract

A network based distribution system and method for distributing/temporarily renting playable media items, such as movies in a digital format. The distribution system includes software logic for selecting and delivering titles based on a variety of factors, including a scoring and weighing adjustment on a title/subscriber basis.

Claims

1. A method of distributing playable media items, the playable media items corresponding to machine readable media readable by a subscriber machine player, the method comprising the steps of:

(a) setting up a subscriber rental queue for a subscriber with a computing system, said subscriber rental queue consisting of an ordered list of one or more playable media items to be delivered to the subscriber;

wherein said subscriber rental queue, including an order of said list, is set up at least in part in response to item selection directions provided by the subscriber;

(b) determining with said computing system which of said titles are available titles which can be delivered to the subscriber;

(c) selecting with said computing system from said available titles from said subscriber rental queue for delivery to the subscriber;

wherein said available titles are not considered for selection by said computing system based exclusively on an order in which they are designated within the subscriber rental queue and can be considered for delivery in a sequence which differs from said ordered list.

2. The method of claim 1, wherein during step (c) a limited subset of items N taken from a set of M top ranked items in said ordered list of one or more playable media items is selected and scored to identify a title to be delivered next in sequence.

3. The method of claim 2, wherein N is determined by randomly selecting items from said set of M top ranked items.

4. The method of claim 2, wherein said N items are scored by taking into consideration at least two of the following scoring factors:

a. a ranking (R) on the subscriber list;

b. a demand/supply (S) for the title in question;

c. an amount of time (T) the title has been in the rental queue;

d. a proximity/distance (D) of the distribution center to the subscriber;

e. a recommender prediction (P) score for the title estimated by the recommender engine for the subscriber;

f. a correlation value (C) identified for the title compared to a title that was recently delivered to the subscriber;

g. an influence factor (I) identified for the title based on a rating provided by another subscriber affiliated with the subscriber.

5. The method of claim 4, further including a step:

computing a set of weighting factors to be used with each of said scoring factors.

6. The method of claim 5, further including a step:

computing a final score for each of said N items by forming a vector based on said scoring factors and associated set of weighting factors.

7. The method of claim 2, wherein after a title is identified for delivery, the remaining N−

1 items are re-scored.

8. The method of claim 7 wherein said N−

1 items are re-scored by a routine which weights items which were ranked higher by said subscriber.

9. The method of claim 7 wherein said N−

1 items are supplemented by an additional item which is also scored to determine a title for delivery.

10. The method of claim 1, including a step:

determining with the computing system that a first item selected by the subscriber can be delivered to said subscriber at the same time or prior to a second item selected by the subscriber, and in response to said subscriber designating said a first item with a higher ranking than said second item in said ordered list, said computing system nonetheless first selects said second item from said subscriber rental queue for delivery prior to said first item;

wherein said subscriber perceives that such computing system is operating in accordance with a ranking provided by the subscriber at least for some time periods based on actually receiving said first item prior to or at the same time as said second item.

11. The method of claim 1, further including a step:

providing a visual indicator of a title to be delivered next to the subscriber from anywhere in said ordered list.

12. The method of claim 1, further including a step:

receiving a target requested date for delivery from the subscriber for a particular title.

13. A method of distributing playable media items, the playable media items corresponding to machine readable media readable by a subscriber machine player, the method comprising the steps of:

(a) setting up a subscriber rental queue for a subscriber with a computing system, said subscriber rental queue consisting of an ordered list of one or more playable media items to be delivered to the subscriber;

wherein said subscriber rental queue, including an order of said list, is set up at least in part in response to item selection directions provided by the subscriber;

(b) selecting available titles from said subscriber rental queue with said computing system and placing them in a first sequence in a subscriber delivery queue;

(c) delivering titles from said subscriber delivery queue in a second sequence which differs from said first sequence.

14. The method of claim 13, wherein said first sequence is based primarily on an ordering provided by the subscriber in said ordered list for at least a first set of N titles.

15. The method of claim 13, wherein N titles are placed in said subscriber delivery queue, and said second sequence is based on scoring each of said N titles based on a plurality of scoring factors.

16. The method of claim 13, wherein N titles are placed in said subscriber delivery queue, and said second sequence is based on random selection.

17. The method of claim 13, wherein said titles are actually received by said subscriber in a sequence which tracks said ordered list at least for certain periods.

18. A method of distributing playable media items, the playable media items corresponding to machine readable media readable by a subscriber machine player, the method comprising the steps of:

setting up a subscriber rental queue for a subscriber with a computing system, said subscriber rental queue consisting of an ordered list of one or more playable media items to be delivered to the subscriber;

wherein said subscriber rental queue, including an order of said list, is set up at least in part in response to item selection directions provided by the subscriber;

identifying a set of M top ranked titles from said subscriber;

selecting a subset N of titles from said set of M top ranked titles;

scoring each title in said subset of N titles to determine a delivery sequence for said N titles;

wherein said scoring for a title includes factors other than a ranking identified by the subscriber for such title;

delivering titles from said subscriber rental queue in a sequence which differs from said ordered list.

19. The method of claim 18 wherein said N titles are selected at random from said set of M top ranked titles.

20. The method of claim 18 wherein said subscriber actually receives said titles in accordance with said ranking for at least some periods.
