Abstract

For Quality of Service (QoS) implementation in a multiple-access communication system, a base station processes data transmissions from terminals for all QoS classes supported by the system and obtains status information for the data transmissions. The status information may indicate whether each packet is decoded correctly or in error and the delay for each packet. For each QoS class, the base station derives one or more metrics based on the status information for data transmissions from disadvantaged terminals and updates the QoS parameter based on the metrics and requirements for the QoS class. The QoS parameter for each QoS class determines the transmit powers for the data transmissions sent for that QoS class. The base station broadcasts the QoS parameters for all QoS classes. Each terminal uses the QoS parameter for an applicable QoS class for power control of the data transmission sent to the base station.

Claims

1. An apparatus comprising:

a processor operative to process at least one data transmission for a Quality of Service (QoS) class and to provide status information for the at least one data transmission; and

a controller operative to update a QoS parameter for the QoS class based on the status information and at least one requirement for the QoS class and to generate power control information based upon the QoS parameter.

The apparatus of claim 1, wherein the processor is operative to provide status of packets received for the at least one data transmission, and wherein the controller is operative to derive at least one metric based on the status of the packets and to update the QoS parameter based on the at least one metric and the at least one requirement for the QoS class.

The apparatus of claim 1, wherein the processor is operative to provide status of packets received for the at least one data transmission, and wherein the controller is operative to determine an error event rate for the at least one data transmission and to update the QoS parameter based on the error event rate and an error event limit for the QoS class.

4. The apparatus of claim 3, wherein the controller is operative to consider each packet decoded in error and each packet received after a predetermined maximum delay as an error event.

5. The apparatus of claim 1, further comprising:

a channel estimator operative to estimate a channel gain for each of a plurality of terminals, and wherein the controller is operative to select at least one terminal based on channel gains for the plurality of terminals, and wherein the at least one data transmission is from the at least one terminal.

6. The apparatus of claim 1, wherein the at least one data transmission is from at least one disadvantaged terminal in the QoS class, and wherein data transmissions from other terminals in the QoS class are not used to update the QoS parameter for the QoS class.

7. The apparatus of claim 1, wherein the controller is operative to maintain a plurality of QoS parameters for a plurality of QoS classes and to update QoS parameter for each QoS class based on status information and at least one requirement for the QoS class.

8. The apparatus of claim 7, wherein the plurality of QoS classes correspond to a plurality of sets of ports.

9. The apparatus of claim 1, wherein controller is configured to determine a minimum transmit power, a maximum transmit power, or both minimum and maximum transmit powers for each of the at least one data transmission based upon the QoS parameter.

10. The apparatus of claim 1, wherein controller is configured to determine transmit power for each of the at least one data transmission based upon the QoS parameter.

11. The apparatus of claim 1, wherein controller is configured to determine a signal-to-noise-and-interference ratio (SNR) for each of the at least one data transmission based upon the QoS parameter.

12. The apparatus of claim 1, wherein controller is configured to determine at least one transmission parameter for the at least one data transmission based upon the QoS parameter.

13. An apparatus comprising:

means for processing at least one data transmission for a Quality of Service (QoS) class to obtain status information for the at least one data transmission; and

means for updating a QoS parameter for the QoS class based on the status information and at least one requirement for the QoS class and for generating power control information based upon the QoS parameter.

14. The apparatus of claim 13, further comprising:

means for identifying at least one disadvantaged terminal in the QoS class, wherein the at least one data transmission is from the at least one disadvantaged terminal.

15. A method of implementing Quality of Service (QoS) in a communication system, comprising:

processing at least one data transmission for a QoS class to obtain status information for the at least one data transmission; and

updating a QoS parameter for the QoS class based on the status information and at least one requirement for the QoS class, wherein the QoS parameter is used for power control of the at least one data transmission.

16. The method of claim 15, further comprising:

identifying at least one disadvantaged terminal in the QoS class, wherein the at least one data transmission is from the at least one disadvantaged terminal.

17. An apparatus comprising:

a processor operative to process at least one data transmission for each of a plurality of Quality of Service (QoS) classes and to provide status information for the at least one data transmission in each QoS class; and

a controller operative to update a QoS parameter for each QoS class based on at least one requirement for the QoS class and the status information for the at least one data transmission in the QoS class and to generate power control information for the at least one data transmission in the QoS class based upon the QoS parameter for the QoS class.

18. The apparatus of claim 17, wherein the plurality of QoS classes support a plurality of services, and wherein the at least one requirement for each QoS class is determined based on at least one performance requirement for a service mapped to the QoS class.

19. The apparatus of claim 17, wherein the QoS parameter for each QoS class is a power control parameter used to determine transmit powers for data transmissions sent by terminals belonging in the QoS class.

20. An apparatus comprising:

a processor operative to process a plurality of data transmissions from a plurality of terminals in communication with a base station, wherein the plurality of data transmissions comprise at least one data transmission for each of at least one Quality of Service (QoS) class; and

a controller operative to update a QoS parameter for each of the at least one QoS class based on at least one requirement for the QoS class and status information for the at least one data transmission for the QoS class.

21. The apparatus of claim 20, further comprising:

at least one transmitter unit operative to broadcast the QoS parameter for each QoS class.

22. The apparatus of claim 20, wherein the processor is operative to derive a signal-to-noise-and-interference ratio (SNR) estimate for each of the plurality of terminals, and wherein the controller is operative to generate a transmit power control (TPC) command for each terminal based on the SNR estimate for the terminal.

23. The apparatus of claim 20, further comprising:

an interference estimator operative to estimate inter-sector interference observed by the base station, and wherein the controller is operative to generate an indication of the inter-sector interference observed by the base station.

24. The apparatus of claim 23, wherein the controller is operative to generate an other-sector interference (OSI) bit indicative of the inter-sector interference observed by the base station relative to an interference threshold.

25. The apparatus of claim 20, wherein the controller is operative to determine at least one performance metric for the plurality of transmissions and to update an overlapping factor based on the at least one performance metric, the overlapping factor being indicative of an average number of overlapping transmissions for the base station.

26. An apparatus comprising:

means for processing a plurality of data transmissions from a plurality of terminals in communication with a base station, wherein the plurality of data transmissions comprise at least one data transmission for each of at least one Quality of Service (QoS) class; and

means for updating a QoS parameter for each of the at least one QoS class based on at least one requirement for the QoS class and status information for the at least one data transmission for the QoS class.

27. The apparatus of claim 26, further comprising:

means for deriving a signal-to-noise-and-interference ratio (SNR) estimate for each of the plurality of terminals; and

means for generating a transmit power control (TPC) command for each terminal based on the SNR estimate for the terminal.

28. The apparatus of claim 26, further comprising:

means for estimating inter-sector interference observed by the base station; and

means for generating an other-sector interference (OSI) bit indicative of the inter-sector interference observed by the base station relative to an interference threshold.

29. An apparatus comprising:

a processor operative to obtain a Quality of Service (QoS) parameter for a QoS class, the QoS parameter being used for power control to meet at least one requirement for the QoS class; and

a controller operative to determine transmit power for data transmission to a base station based on the QoS parameter.

30. The apparatus of claim 29, wherein the processor is operative to detect a transmit power control (TPC) command from the base station, and wherein the controller is operative to determine the transmit power for the data transmission further based on the detected TPC command.

31. The apparatus of claim 30, wherein the controller is operative to adjust a reference power level based on the detected TPC command and to determine the transmit power for the data transmission based on the reference power level.

32. The apparatus of claim 29, wherein the processor is operative to obtain at least one indication of interference observed by at least one neighbor base station, and wherein the controller is operative to determine the transmit power for the data transmission further based on the at least one indication of interference.

33. The apparatus of claim 32, wherein the controller is operative to adjust a transmit power delta based on the at least one indication of interference, to limit the transmit power delta based on the QoS parameter, and to determine the transmit power for the data transmission based on the transmit power delta.

34. The apparatus of claim 29, wherein the processor is operative to obtain an overlapping factor indicative of an average number of overlapping transmissions for the base station, and wherein the controller is operative to determine the transmit power for the data transmission further based on the overlapping factor.

35. An apparatus comprising:

means for obtaining a Quality of Service (QoS) parameter for a QoS class, the QoS parameter being used for power control to meet at least one requirement for the QoS class; and

means for determining transmit power for data transmission to a base station based on the QoS parameter.

36. The apparatus of claim 35, further comprising:

means for detecting a transmit power control (TPC) command from the base station, and wherein the means for determining the transmit power for the data transmission comprises means for determining the transmit power for the data transmission further based on the detected TPC command.

37. The apparatus of claim 35, further comprising:

means for obtaining at least one indication of interference observed by at least one neighbor base station, and wherein the means for determining the transmit power for the data transmission comprises means for determining the transmit power for the data transmission further based on the at least one indication of interference.

38. The apparatus of claim 35, further comprising:

means for obtaining an overlapping factor indicative of an average number of overlapping transmissions for the base station, and wherein the means for determining the transmit power for the data transmission comprises means for determining the transmit power for the data transmission further based on the overlapping factor.
