Abstract

A method of introducing a beneficial substance into the body is presented. The method includes the steps of loading biodendrimer with the beneficial substance, and positioning the biodendrimer relative to the body, such that the beneficial substance can be absorbed by the body.

Claims

1. An lens for altering the refractive properties of an eye, comprising:

a polymerized first portion formed from a first material, at least a portion of said first portion positioned substantially adjacent a first surface of said lens; and

a second portion formed from an unpolymerized second material, at least a portion of said second portion positioned substantially adjacent a second surface of said lens;

wherein at least a portion of said second material is adapted to increase in volume, when exposed to energy selected from the group consisting of laser light, a chemical and thermal heat or decrease in volume, when exposed to a second energy, while the volume of said first material remains substantially unchanged.

2. A lens according to claim 1, wherein

said first portion and said second portion are formed from the same material.

3. A lens according to claim 2, wherein

said lens is a contact lens.

4. A lens according to claim 1, wherein

said first material and said second material are formed from a synthetic material containing loose monomers and an polymerization initiator.

5. A lens according to claim 1, wherein

at least one of said first material and said second material includes biodendrimer.

6. A lens according to claim 1, wherein

the lens is loaded with a beneficial substance.

7. A method producing a lens to alter the refractive properties the eye, comprising the steps of

forming a first portion of the lens having a first material therein,

fixing the volume of the first material,

forming a second portion of the inlay adjacent the first portion, the second portion having an unpolymerized second material therein, and

exposing the second material to energy to change the configuration of the second portion.

8. A method according to claim 7, wherein

said first material and said second material are substantially the same material.

9. A method according to claim 7, wherein

said lens is a contact lens.

10. A method according to claim 7, further comprising the steps of

positioning the lens on a surface of cornea prior to the step of exposing the second material to energy.

11. A method according to claim 7, further comprising the steps of

fixing the volume of the second material.

12. A lens according to claim 7, wherein

at least one of said first material and said second material includes biodendrimer.

13. A lens according to claim 7, wherein

the lens is loaded with a beneficial substance.

14. A device for altering the refractive properties of an eye, comprising:

an unpolymerized material adapted to be affixed to a lens;

wherein a first surface of said lens is adapted to be positioned adjacent a surface of the cornea and said unpolymerized material is adapted to be positioned substantially adjacent a second surface of said lens; and

wherein at least a portion of said unpolymerized material is adapted to increase in volume, when exposed to energy selected from the group consisting of laser light, a chemical and thermal heat, while the volume of said lens remains substantially unchanged.

15. A device according to claim 14, wherein

at least a portion of said lens is adapted to be positioned between surfaces of the cornea.

16. A device according to claim 14, wherein

said lens is adapted to be positioned adjacent the external surface of the cornea.

17. A device according to claim 14, wherein

said unpolymerized material is formed from a synthetic material containing loose monomers and an polymerization initiator.

18. A device according to claim 14, wherein

at least one of said first material and said second material includes biodendrimer.

19. A device for altering the refractive properties of an eye, comprising:

an unpolymerized material adapted to be affixed to a lens;

wherein said lens portion is adapted to be positioned in the anterior or posterior chamber of the cornea and said unpolymerized material is adapted to be positioned substantially adjacent a surface of said lens; and

wherein at least a portion of said unpolymerized material is adapted to increase in volume, when exposed to energy selected from the group consisting of laser light, a chemical and thermal heat, while the volume of said lens remains substantially unchanged.

20. A device according to claim 19, wherein

said device is adapted to be an intraocular lens.

21. A device according to claim 19, wherein

said unpolymerized material is formed from a synthetic material containing loose monomers and an polymerization initiator.

22. A device according to claim 19, wherein

said unpolymerized material includes biodendrimer.
