Abstract

Disclosed herein are devices and methods for occluding intracardiac defects, for example, a patent foramen ovale (PFO). The devices according to the invention have various features that enhance the flexibility of the device and improve the device'"'"'s ability to conform to the location of the intracardiac defect. In particular, intracardiac occluders with curved arms are disclosed.

Claims

1. An intracardiac occluder, comprising:

a central body portion;

a proximal occlusion shell comprising a plurality of arms, at least one of said arms comprising a curve extending from a hub end to a free end in a constantly changing plane around a central axis; and

,

a distal occlusion shell, wherein said central body portion is secured between said proximal occlusion shell and said distal occlusion shell for positioning said device in a defect.

2. The intracardiac occluder of claim 1, wherein said arms are joint-free.

3. The proximal occlusion shell of claim 1, comprising a second arm comprising a curve extending from said hub end to a free end in a constantly changing plane around a central axis.

4. The proximal occlusion shell of claim 3, wherein said second arm curves in a direction opposite a direction of said at least one arm comprising a curve.

5. The proximal occlusion shell of claim 3, wherein said at least one arm comprising a curve and said second arm curve in a same direction.

6. The proximal occlusion shell of claim 4, wherein said second arm and said at least one arm comprising a curve are adjacent to one another.

7. The proximal occlusion shell of claim 1, further comprising at least one arm wherein the arm curves such that the free end of said at least one arm is in a same plane as said hub end of said arm and all other points on said arm.

8. The proximal occlusion shell of claim 1, wherein an arm is made of a material selected from the group consisting of nitinol, MP35N, polymers, bioresorbable polymers, and a metal.

9. The proximal occlusion shell of claim 1, wherein at least one arm comprises a plurality of wires.

10. The proximal occlusion shell of claim 9, wherein a cross-section of at least one of said wires is a shape selected from the group consisting of a circle, a triangle, a square, a rectangle, and an oval.

11. An intracardiac occluder, comprising:

a central body portion;

a proximal occlusion shell comprising a plurality of arms, each arm extending from a hub end to a free end, wherein at least one of said plurality of arms comprises a curve extending from the hub end to the free end, and at least one other of said plurality of arms is straight; and

a distal occlusion shell, wherein said central body portion is secured between said proximal occlusion shell and said distal occlusion shell for positioning said device in a defect.

12. The intracardiac occluder of claim 11, wherein said arms are joint-free.

13. The proximal occlusion shell of claim 11, wherein the at least one arm comprising a curve extends from said hub end to said free end in a constantly changing plane around a central axis.

14. The proximal occlusion shell of claim 11, wherein the free end of said at least one arm comprising a curve remains in a same plane as said hub end and all other points on said at least one arm comprising a curve.

15. The proximal occlusion shell of claim 11, wherein said at least one arm comprising a curve extending from the hub end to the free end of the arm is adjacent to said at least one arm that is straight.

16. The proximal occlusion shell of claim 11, wherein the at least one arm that is straight differs in length compared to another arm that is straight.

17. The proximal occlusion shell of claim 11, wherein the at least one arm comprising a curve differs in length compared to another arm comprising a curve.

18. An intracardiac occluder, comprising:

a central body portion;

a proximal occlusion shell comprising a first arm comprising a curve extending from a hub end to a free end of the first arm and a second arm comprising a curve extending from a hub end to a free end of the second arm, said second arm curving in a direction opposite to a direction of the first arm; and

a distal occlusion shell, wherein said central body portion is secured between said proximal occlusion shell and said distal occlusion shell for positioning said device in a defect.

19. The intracardiac occluder of claim 18, wherein said plurality of arms are joint-free.

20. The proximal occlusion shell of claim 18, wherein said second arm comprising a curve is adjacent to said first arm comprising a curve.

21. The proximal occlusion shell of claim 18, wherein at least one of said first arm or said second arm comprises a curve extending from the hub end to the free end in a constantly changing plane around a central axis.

22. The proximal occlusion shell of claim 18, wherein at least one of said first arm or said second arm curves such that the hub end is in a same plane as the free end and all other points on the arm.

23. The proximal occlusion shell of claim 22, wherein the hub end and the free end of said first arm are in a first plane and the hub end and the free end of said second arm are in a second plane.

24. The proximal occlusion shell of claim 18, further comprising at least one straight arm.
