Abstract

Embodiments of the present disclosure include a handheld multi-parameter patient monitor capable of determining multiple physiological parameters from the output of a light sensitive detector capable of detecting light attenuated by body tissue. For example, in an embodiment, the monitor is capable of advantageously and accurately displaying one or more of pulse rate, plethysmograph data, perfusion quality, signal confidence, and values of blood constituents in body tissue, including for example, arterial carbon monoxide saturation (“HbCO”), methemoglobin saturation (“HbMet”), total hemoglobin (“Hbt”), arterial oxygen saturation (“SpO₂”), fractional arterial oxygen saturation (“SpaO₂”), or the like. In an embodiment, the monitor advantageously includes a plurality of display modes enabling more parameter data to be displayed than the available physical display real estate.

Claims

1. A method of indicating abnormal behavior of one or more physiological parameters, the method comprising:

noninvasively determining measured values of a monitored physiological parameter;

based on a precision of the noninvasive determination, mapping the measured values to a qualitative indication; and

presenting the qualitative indication.

2. The method of claim 1, wherein the measured values include at least blood parameters other than blood oxygen saturation

3. The method of claim 2, wherein the blood parameters comprise at least one of a measurement of carbon monoxide, a measurement of methemoglobin, a measurement of total hemoglobin, a measurement of fractional saturation.

4. The method of claim 1, wherein the qualitative indication comprises combinations of some of the measured values.

5. The method of claim 1, wherein the qualitative indication comprises a LED activation.

6. The method of claim 1, wherein the qualitative indication comprises an alarm message.

7. The method of claim 1, wherein the qualitative indication comprises audible alarms.

8. The method of claim 7, wherein the audible alarms change as measured values move further from one or more thresholds.

9. A method of indicating abnormal behavior of one or more physiological parameters, the method comprising:

noninvasively measuring one or more physiological parameters; and

based on the measurement presenting a non-numerical indication of a behavior status of one or more physiological parameters.

10. The method of claim 9, wherein the indication of the behavior status comprises an abnormal status indication.

11. The method of claim 9, wherein the indication of the behavior status comprises one of a normal or abnormal status indication.

12. The method of claim 9, wherein the indication of the behavior status comprises one of a low, moderate, or high behavior status indication.

13. The method of claim 9, wherein the indication of the behavior status comprises one of a plurality of indicators indicating a range of the behavior status.

14. The method of claim 13, wherein the range of the behavior status is nonlinear.

15. The method of claim 9, wherein the indication of a behavior status comprises a light indicator.

16. The method of claim 15, wherein the light indicator comprises an LED.

17. The method of claim 9, wherein the indication of a behavior status comprises an auditory indicator.

18. The method of claim 17, wherein the auditory indicator sounds when an abnormal behavior status is presented.

19. The method of claim 17, wherein the auditory indicator comprises a beep sound.

20. The method of claim 19, the auditory beep comprises a rate of beeping increases with increasingly abnormal behavior.

21. The method of claim 9, wherein the indication of the behavior status comprises a flashing display.

22. The method of claim 21, wherein a rate of the flashing display increases with increasingly abnormal behavior status.
