Abstract

Methods and systems for reconfiguring communications systems are provided. A communications system comprises one or more radio head interface modules and a call processing software module. The one or more radio head interface modules are adapted to communicate with the call processing software module. The call processing software module performs modulation and demodulation of voice and data streams using one or more air interface standards. The one or more radio head interface modules receive reconfiguration parameters from the call processing software module for one or more logical channels. The call processing software module and the one or more radio head interface modules communicate one or more pages of data samples to each other, each of the one or more pages of data samples having a page header. Reconfiguration parameters are contained in the page header.

Claims

1. A communications system, the system comprising:

one or more radio head interface modules; and

a call processing software module, the one or more radio head interface modules adapted to communicate with the call processing software module;

wherein the call processing software module performs modulation and demodulation of voice and data streams using one or more air interface standards;

wherein the one or more radio head interface modules receive reconfiguration parameters from the call processing software module for one or more logical channels;

wherein the call processing software module and the one or more radio head interface modules communicate one or more pages of data samples to each other, each of the one or more pages of data samples having a page header;

wherein reconfiguration parameters are contained in the page header.

2. The system of claim 1, further comprising:

one or more interface devices, wherein the one or more radio head interface modules communicate with the call processing software module over the one or more interface devices.

The system of claim 2, wherein the one or more interface devices includes at least one of a PCI-X interface, an ATCA interface, a PCI Express interface, a Gigabit Ethernet interface, a SCSI interface, a Rocket I/O interface, a UDP/IP link interface, a TCP/IP link interface, a Serial ATA interface, a Card bus for PCMIA card interface, a high speed serial interface and a high speed parallel interface.

The system of claim 1, wherein the one or more air interface protocols include at least one of Global System for Mobile communications (GSM), Advanced Mobile Phone System (AMPS), code division multiple access (CDMA), Wide-band CDMA, time division multiple access (TDMA), Cellular Digital Packet Data (CDPD), Enhanced Data rates for GSM Evolution (EDGE), General Packet Radio Service (GPRS), Integrated Digital Enhanced Network (iDEN), and Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing (OFDM).

5. The system of claim 1, wherein the reconfiguration parameters include at least one of a frequency hopping indicator, RF frequency channel parameters, a protocol reconfiguration indicator, channel modulation protocol assignment parameters, a signal bandwidth indicator, signal bandwidth allocation parameters, a signal gain indicator, signal gain parameters, a timing trigger.

6. The system of claim 5, wherein the timing trigger is a designated time.

7. The system of claim 6, wherein the designated time correlates to a time count internal to the radio head interface module.

8. The system of claim 7, wherein the radio head interface module further comprises a global positioning system receiver, wherein the time count internal to the radio head interface module is synchronized with an output signal from the global positioning system receiver.

9. The system of claim 8, wherein the call processing software module is synchronized with an output signal from the global positioning system receiver.

10. The system of claim 5, wherein the timing trigger is a designated data sample.

11. The system of claim 5, wherein when the page header includes RF frequency channel parameters, the page header also includes the frequency hopping indicator.

12. The system of claim 11, wherein when the page header includes RF frequency channel parameters and the frequency hopping indicator, the page header also includes the timing trigger.

13. The system of claim 5, wherein when the page header includes channel modulation protocol assignment parameters, the page header also includes the protocol reconfiguration indicator.

14. The system of claim 13, wherein when the page header includes channel modulation protocol assignment parameters and the protocol reconfiguration indicator, the page header also includes the timing trigger.

15. The system of claim 5, wherein when the page header includes signal bandwidth allocation parameters, the page header also includes the signal bandwidth indicator.

16. The system of claim 15, wherein when the page header includes signal bandwidth allocation parameters and the signal bandwidth indicator, the page header also includes the timing trigger.

17. The system of claim 5, wherein when the page header includes signal gain parameters, the page header also includes the signal gain indicator.

18. The system of claim 17, wherein when the page header includes signal gain parameters and the signal gain indicator, the page header also includes the timing trigger.

19. The system of claim 5, wherein a page of data samples further comprises a plurality of quadwords.

20. The system of claim 19, wherein one or more quadwords of the plurality of quadwords each contain one or more data samples.

21. The system of claim 20, wherein each data sample is a complex RF data sample.

22. The system of claim 19, wherein one or more of the plurality of quadwords contain the page header.

23. The system of claim 22, wherein within the page of data samples, the one or more quadwords containing the page header precede one or more quadwords each containing one or more data samples.

24. The system of claim 19, wherein each quadword is 64 bits long.

25. The system of claim 5, wherein the radio head interface module further comprises:

a transmit buffer, the transmit buffer adapted to receive a data stream from the call processing software module and store the data stream as a page of data samples;

a transmit engine;

a digital upconverter, the transmit engine adapted to transfer the page of data samples from the transmit buffer to the digital upconverter;

a configuration management unit adapted to receive reconfiguration parameters from the call processing software module; and

a memory adapted with digital upconverter parameters;

wherein the configuration management unit is further adapted to access the memory to lookup associated digital upconverter parameters based on the reconfiguration parameters;

wherein the configuration management unit is further adapted to output the associated digital upconverter parameters to the digital up converter.

26. The system of claim 25, wherein the radio head interface module further comprises:

a receive buffer;

a receive engine; and

a digital downconverter;

the receive engine adapted to transfer a data stream from the digital downconverter to the receive buffer, the receive buffer adapted to store the data stream as a page of data samples, the receive buffer further adapted to output the page of data samples to the call processing software;

the memory further adapted with digital downconverter parameters;

wherein the configuration management unit is further adapted to access the memory to lookup associated digital downconverter parameters based on the reconfiguration parameters; and

wherein the configuration management unit is further adapted to output the associated digital downconverter parameters to the digital downconverter.

27. The system of claim 26, wherein configuration information for an associated set of forward and reverse logical channels is included within the page header of a reverse logical channel of the one or more logical channels.

28. A communications system, comprising:

a server, including;

one or more radio head interface modules; and

a call processing software module, the one or more radio head interface modules adapted to communicate with the call processing software module;

wherein the call processing software performs modulation and demodulation of voice and data streams using one or more air interface protocols; and

a radio head unit coupled to the radio head interface module over one or more transport mediums;

wherein the radio head unit communicates with one or more subscriber units using the one or more air interface protocols;

wherein the radio head interface module receives one or more pages of data samples from the call processing software module for one or more logical channels;

wherein each of the one or more pages of data samples has a page header;

wherein reconfiguration parameters are contained in the page header;

wherein the radio head interface module reconfigures itself for one or more logical channels based on the reconfiguration parameters.

29. The system of claim 28, wherein one or more air interface protocols include at least one of Global System for Mobile communications (GSM), Advanced Mobile Phone System (AMPS), code division multiple access (CDMA), Wide-band CDMA, time division multiple access (TDMA), Cellular Digital Packet Data (CDPD), Enhanced Data rates for GSM Evolution (EDGE), General Packet Radio Service (GPRS), Integrated Digital Enhanced Network (iDEN), and Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing (OFDM).

The system of claim 28, wherein the reconfiguration parameters include at least one of a frequency hopping indicator, RF frequency channel parameters, a protocol reconfiguration indicator, channel modulation protocol assignment parameters, a signal bandwidth indicator, signal bandwidth allocation parameters, a signal gain indicator, signal gain parameters, a timing trigger.

31. The system of claim 30, wherein the radio head interface module further comprises:

a transmit buffer, the transmit buffer adapted to receive a data stream from the call processing software module and store the data stream as a page of data samples;

a transmit engine;

a digital upconverter, the transmit engine adapted to transfer the page of data samples from the transmit buffer to the digital upconverter;

a configuration management unit adapted to receive reconfiguration parameters from the call processing software module; and

a memory adapted with digital upconverter parameters;

wherein the configuration management unit is further adapted to access the memory to lookup the associated digital upconverter parameters based on the reconfiguration parameters;

wherein the configuration management unit is further adapted to output the associated parameters to the digital up converter.

32. The system of claim 31, wherein the radio head interface module further comprises:

a receive buffer;

a receive engine;

a digital downconverter; and

the receive engine adapted to transfer a data stream from the digital downconverter to the receive buffer, the receive buffer adapted to store the data stream as a page of data samples, the receive buffer further adapted to output the page of data samples to the call processing software;

the memory further adapted with digital downconverter parameters;

wherein the configuration management unit is further adapted to access the memory to lookup associated digital downconverter parameters based on the reconfiguration parameters;

wherein the configuration management unit is further adapted to output the associated parameters to the digital downconverter.

33. The system of claim 32, wherein the receive engine is further adapted to add a page header to the page of data samples stored in the receive buffer, wherein the page header includes configuration information for a forward logical channel and an associated reverse logical channel.

34. A radio head interface for a communications system, the radio head interface comprising:

one or more digital frequency converters; and

a configuration management unit, the configuration management unit adapted to receive reconfiguration parameters from the communications system for a digital frequency converter of the one or more digital frequency converters, the configuration management unit further adapted to reconfigure the digital frequency converter of the one or more digital frequency converters based on the reconfiguration parameters, wherein the reconfiguration parameters are contained within a page of data samples received by the radio head interface.

35. The radio head interface of claim 34, wherein the digital frequency converter is a digital up-converter.

36. The radio head interface of claim 34 wherein the digital frequency converter is a digital down-converter.

37. The radio head interface of claim 34, wherein the page of data samples further comprises a page header, wherein the reconfiguration parameters are contained in the page header.

38. The radio head interface of claim 37, wherein reconfiguration parameters include at least one of a frequency hopping indicator, RF frequency channel parameters, a protocol reconfiguration indicator, channel modulation protocol assignment parameters, a signal bandwidth indicator, signal bandwidth allocation parameters, a signal gain indicator, signal gain parameters, a timing trigger.

39. The radio head interface of claim 38, wherein the timing trigger is a designated time.

40. The radio head interface of claim 39, wherein the designated time correlates to a time count internal to the radio head interface module.

41. The radio head interface of claim 38, wherein the timing trigger is a designated data sample.

42. The radio head interface of claim 38, wherein when the page header includes RF frequency channel parameters, the page header also includes the frequency hopping indicator.

43. The radio head interface of claim 42, wherein when the page header includes RF frequency channel parameters and the frequency hopping indicator, the page header also includes the timing trigger.

44. The radio head interface of claim 38, wherein when the page header includes channel modulation protocol assignment parameters, the page header also includes the protocol reconfiguration indicator.

45. The radio head interface of claim 44, wherein when the page header includes channel modulation protocol assignment parameters and the protocol reconfiguration indicator, the page header also includes the timing trigger.

46. The radio head interface of claim 38, wherein when the page header includes signal bandwidth allocation parameters, the page header also includes the signal bandwidth indicator.

47. The radio head interface of claim 46, wherein when the page header includes signal bandwidth allocation parameters and the signal bandwidth indicator, the page header also includes the timing trigger.

48. The radio head interface of claim 38, wherein when the page header includes signal gain parameters, the page header also includes the signal gain indicator.

49. The radio head interface of claim 48, wherein when the page header includes signal gain parameters and the signal gain indicator, the page header also includes the timing trigger.

50. The radio head interface of claim 38, wherein a page of data samples further comprises a plurality of quadwords.

51. The radio head interface of claim 50, wherein one or more quadwords of the plurality of quadwords contains one or more data samples.

52. A radio head interface module, the module comprising:

a transmit buffer, the transmit buffer adapted to receive a data stream from a call processing software module and store the data stream as a page of data samples having a page header;

a transmit engine;

a digital upconverter, the transmit engine adapted to transfer the page of data samples from the transmit buffer to the digital upconverter;

a configuration management unit adapted to receive reconfiguration parameters from the call processing software module, wherein the reconfiguration parameters are included within the page header; and

a memory adapted with digital upconverter parameters;

wherein the configuration management unit is further adapted to access the memory to lookup associated digital upconverter parameters based on the reconfiguration parameters;

wherein the configuration management unit is further adapted to output the associated parameters to the digital up converter.

53. The system of claim 52, the module further comprising:

a receive buffer;

a receive engine; and

a digital downconverter;

the receive engine adapted to transfer a data stream from the digital downconverter to the receive buffer, the receive buffer adapted to store the data stream as a page of data samples having a page header, the receive buffer further adapted to output the page of data samples to the call processing software;

the memory further adapted with digital downconverter parameters;

wherein the configuration management unit is further adapted to access the memory to lookup the associated digital downconverter parameters based on the reconfiguration parameters; and

wherein the configuration management unit is further adapted to output the associated parameters to the digital downconverter.

54. The system of claim 53, wherein configuration information for an associated set of forward and reverse logical channels is included within the page header of a reverse logical channel of the one or more logical channels.

55. A method for dynamic reconfiguration of resources, the method comprising:

communicating channel reconfiguration parameters from a call processing software module to a radio head interface module;

adding a header to a page of data samples;

embedding channel reconfiguration parameters into the header; and

sending the page of data samples and header to the radio head interface module.

56. The method of claim 55, further comprising:

extracting the channel reconfiguration parameters from the header; and

reconfiguring the channel based on the channel reconfiguration parameters.

57. The method of claim 55, wherein reconfiguration parameters include at least one of:

a frequency hopping indicator, RF frequency channel parameters, a protocol reconfiguration indicator, channel modulation protocol assignment parameters, a signal bandwidth indicator, signal bandwidth allocation parameters, a signal gain indicator, signal gain parameters, a timing trigger.

58. A method for dynamic reconfiguration of resources, the method comprising:

communicating channel information from a radio head interface module to a call processing software module;

adding a header to a page of data samples;

embedding information about a channel into the header; and

sending the page of data samples and header to the call processing software module.

59. The method of claim 58, further comprising extracting the information from the header.

60. A computer-readable medium having computer-executable instructions for dynamic reconfiguration of resources, the method comprising:

communicating channel reconfiguration parameters from a call processing software module to a radio head interface module;

adding a header to a page of data samples;

embedding channel reconfiguration parameters into the header; and

sending the page of data samples and header to the radio head interface module.

The method of claim 60, wherein reconfiguration parameters include at least one of a frequency hopping indicator, RF frequency channel parameters, a protocol reconfiguration indicator, channel modulation protocol assignment parameters, a signal bandwidth indicator, signal bandwidth allocation parameters, a signal gain indicator, signal gain parameters, a timing trigger.

62. The method of claim 60, wherein the method further comprises:

receiving the page of data samples and header from the call processing software module;

extracting channel reconfiguration parameters from the header; and

reconfiguring the channel based on the channel reconfiguration parameters.

63. A computer-readable medium having computer-executable instructions for dynamic reconfiguration of resources, the method comprising:

communicating channel reconfiguration information from a call processing software module to a radio head interface module;

receiving a page of data samples from a call processing software module;

extracting channel reconfiguration parameters from a page header included in the page of data samples; and

reconfiguring the channel based on the channel reconfiguration parameters.

64. The method of claim 63, wherein reconfiguration parameters include at least one of a frequency hopping indicator, RF frequency channel parameters, a protocol reconfiguration indicator, channel modulation protocol assignment parameters, a signal bandwidth indicator, signal bandwidth allocation parameters, a signal gain indicator, signal gain parameters, a timing trigger.

65. A computer-readable medium having computer-executable instructions for dynamic reconfiguration of resources, the method comprising:

communicating channel information from a radio head interface module to a call processing software module;

adding a header to a page of data samples;

embedding information about a channel into the header; and

sending the page of data samples and header to the call processing software module.

66. The method of claim 65, further comprising extracting the information from the header.

67. A communication system comprising:

a software module;

a radio head interface module;

means for embedding channel reconfiguration parameters into a page header of a page of data samples;

means for communicating the page of data samples and page header from the software module to the radio head interface module;

means for extracting the channel reconfiguration parameters from the header; and

means for reconfiguring a communications channel based on the channel reconfiguration parameters.

68. A method for dynamic reconfiguration of resources, the method comprising:

communicating voice and data streams between a call processing software module and one or more radio head interface modules;

modulating and demodulating voice and data streams using one or more air interface standards;

receiving reconfiguration parameters for the one or more radio head interface modules; and

communicate one or more pages of data between the call processing software module and the one or more radio head interface modules, each of the one or more pages of data samples having a page header, wherein the reconfiguration parameters are contained in the page header.

69. A communications system, the system comprising:

a radio head interface module;

means for modulating and demodulating voice and data streams using one or more air interface standards;

means for communicating voice and data streams with the radio head interface module; and

means for communicating reconfiguration parameters with the radio head interface module, wherein the reconfiguration parameters are contained in a page header of a page of data samples.

70. The system of claim 69, wherein the one or more air interface protocols include at least one of Global System for Mobile communications (GSM), Advanced Mobile Phone System (AMPS), code division multiple access (CDMA), Wide-band CDMA, time division multiple access (TDMA), Cellular Digital Packet Data (CDPD), Enhanced Data rates for GSM Evolution (EDGE), General Packet Radio Service (GPRS), Integrated Digital Enhanced Network (iDEN), and Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing (OFDM).

71. The method of claim 69, wherein the reconfiguration parameters include at least one of a frequency hopping indicator, RF frequency channel parameters, a protocol reconfiguration indicator, channel modulation protocol assignment parameters, a signal bandwidth indicator, signal bandwidth allocation parameters, a signal gain indicator, signal gain parameters, a timing trigger.

72. The system of claim 71, wherein the radio head interface module further comprises:

means to receive forward voice and data streams and store the forward voice and data streams as a page of data samples;

a digital upconverter;

means to transfer the page of data samples to the digital upconverter;

means for memory adapted with digital upconverter parameters;

means to access the memory to lookup digital upconverter parameters based on the reconfiguration parameters; and

means to output the associated parameters to the digital up converter.

73. The system of claim 72, wherein the radio head interface module further comprises:

means to store reverse voice and data streams, wherein the reverse voice and data streams are stored as a page of data samples;

a digital downconverter;

means to transfer reverse voice and data streams from the digital downconverter to the means to store reverse voice and data streams;

means to output the page of data samples to the means for modulating and demodulating voice and data streams using one or more air interface standards;

means to access the memory to lookup digital downconverter parameters based on the reconfiguration parameters; and

means to output the associated parameters to the digital downconverter;

means for memory further adapted with digital downconverter parameters.

74. The system of claim 73, wherein the timing trigger is a designated time.

75. The system of claim 73, wherein the designated time correlates to a time count internal to the radio head interface module.

76. The system of claim 73, wherein the timing trigger is a designated data sample.
