Abstract

Systems and methods for detecting targets using pulse-compressed radar signals are disclosed. In one application, relatively small targets that are masked by the time-sidelobes of a larger target'"'"'s return signal can be detected. The methods include a signal expansion type algorithm that is used to process the pulse-compressed return signal. Specifically, a generalized Fourier expansion expression having a summation of PSF terms is used to expand the pulse-compressed signal. Each term represents a respective target and includes a point spread function and a complex coefficient. The signal expansion procedure can be used to determine a set of optimum complex coefficients, with one coefficient for each range bin. Doppler frequency can be used together with range to optimize the complex coefficients. Next, targets are detected by analyzing each range bin to determine whether the corresponding complex coefficient has an absolute magnitude greater than a pre-determined threshold.

Claims

1. A method for detecting a plurality of targets, said method comprising the steps of:

transmitting a coded pulse signal for scattering by each target to generate a return signal;

receiving said return signal;

applying pulse compression to said return signal to create a pulse-compressed signal;

expanding said pulse-compressed signal to a generalized Fourier expansion expression, said expression being a summation of terms, with each term including a point spread function and a complex coefficient; and

processing said complex coefficients to detect said targets.

2. A method as recited in claim 1 wherein said coded pulse signal has a pseudo-random coded waveform.

3. A method as recited in claim 1 wherein said coded pulse signal has a linear frequency modulated waveform.

4. A method as recited in claim 1 wherein each said complex coefficient has an amplitude component and a phase component.

5. A method as recited in claim 1 wherein a constant false alarm rate (CFAR) technique is used to process said complex coefficients and detect the targets.

6. A method as recited in claim 1 further comprising the step of identifying a range and radar cross section for each target.

7. A method as recited in claim 1 wherein each said point spread function is generated in two-dimensional (range×

Doppler) space.

8. A method as recited in claim 1 wherein said signal expansion step includes the step of calculating a covariance matrix for a point spread function.

9. A method as recited in claim 8 wherein said calculating step is performed in real time.

10. A method as recited in claim 8 wherein said calculating step is performed off-line.

11. A method for detecting a plurality of targets, said method comprising the steps of:

transmitting a coded pulse signal for scattering by each target to generate a return signal;

receiving said return signal;

applying pulse compression to said return signal to create a pulse-compressed signal;

developing an expansion expression, said expression being a summation of terms, with each term including a point spread function and a complex coefficient;

applying said expansion expression to said pulse-compressed signal to optimize said complex coefficients; and

processing said complex coefficients to detect said targets.

12. A method as recited in claim 11 wherein said expansion expression is a function of range, and said applying step produces a set of complex coefficients, with each complex coefficient corresponding to a specific range.

13. A method as recited in claim 12 wherein said processing step is accomplished by:

calculating a magnitude for each complex coefficient; and

comparing the magnitude for each complex coefficient to a threshold value to a set of ranges in which targets are detected.

14. A method as recited in claim 13 wherein said comparing step is accomplished using a constant false alarm rate (CFAR) technique.

15. A method as recited in claim 11 wherein said expansion expression is a function of range and Doppler frequency, and said applying step produces a set of complex coefficients, with each complex coefficient corresponding to a specific range.

16. A radar system for detecting a plurality of targets, said radar system comprising:

a transmitter for transmitting a coded pulse signal for scattering by each target to generate a return signal;

a receiver for receiving said return signal and creating a pulse-compressed signal therefrom;

a means for expanding said pulse-compressed signal to a generalized Fourier expansion expression, said expression being a summation of terms, with each term including a point spread function and a complex coefficient; and

a processing means for detecting said targets from said complex coefficients.

17. A radar system as recited in claim 16 wherein said coded pulse signal has a pseudo-random coded waveform.

18. A radar system as recited in claim 16 wherein said coded pulse signal has a linear frequency modulated waveform.

19. A radar system as recited in claim 16 wherein each said complex coefficient has an amplitude component and a phase component.

20. A radar system as recited in claim 16 wherein a constant false alarm rate (CFAR) technique is used to process said complex coefficients and detect the targets.
