Abstract

A method and apparatus are provided for modeling circulation in a living subject. The method includes the steps of developing a model for living subjects in general and correcting the model to substantially conform to the overall cerebral physiology of the living subject. The method further includes the step of calculating a cerebral flow of the living subject based upon the corrected model and a selected cerebral blood flow perturbation.

Claims

1. A method, comprising:

displaying selected views of a 3D image of a portion of a patient'"'"'s vasculature derived from 3D MRI volume data;

selecting a particular image plane of the 3D MRI volume data from the 3D image;

calculating a 2D image corresponding to the selected image plane from the 3D MRI volume data;

defining a region of interest around a selected blood vessel in the 2D image, refining the region of interest to obtain the border of the selected blood vessel, and calculating a center point of the blood vessel;

deriving a set of center points of the selected blood vessel from the 3D MRI volume data as the selected image plane is moved generally along the length of the selected blood vessel; and

,

defining a location and slice orientation for phase contrast magnetic resonance angiography corresponding to a selected pair of the identified center points.

2. The method of claim 1 further comprising selecting a particular image plane of the 3D MRI volume data from a set of available image planes, wherein the selected image plane is the one most nearly perpendicular to the direction of blood flow within the selected blood vessel.

3. The method of claim 1 further comprising refining the region of interest to obtain the border of the selected blood vessel by image segmentation using thresholding.

4. The method of claim 1 further comprising:

employing a line-fitting algorithm to fit the derived center points of the blood vessel to one or more lines;

selecting the line of the one or more lines with the maximum length; and

,

defining a location and slice orientation for phase contrast magnetic resonance angiography corresponding to a center and an endpoint of the selected line.

5. The method of claim 1 further comprising:

drawing the region of interest in the 3D image of the patient'"'"'s vasculature as correlated from the region of interest in the 2D image; and

,

moving the image plane generally along the length of the selected blood vessel by moving the region of interest along the selected blood vessel in the 3D image and correlating the moved region of interest to an image plane of the 3D volume data.

6. The method of claim 1 further comprising constructing the 3D image of a portion of the patient'"'"'s vasculature from the 3D MRI volume data by generating a polygonal mesh corresponding to the surfaces of the blood vessels in the 3D MRI volume data using a marching cube algorithm.

7. The method of claim 6 further comprising converting the polygonal mesh into a 3D scenegraph object.

8. The method of claim 7 further comprising rotating, translating, and zooming in and out of the 3D scenegraph object to select a region of interest and image plane.

9. The method of claim 1 further comprising calculating a cross-sectional area of the selected blood vessel.

10. The method of claim 9 further comprising:

performing phase contrast magnetic resonance angiography using the selected location and slice orientation; and

,

calculating a blood flow through the selected blood vessel.

11. An apparatus, comprising:

means for displaying selected views of a 3D image of a portion of a patient'"'"'s vasculature derived from 3D MRI volume data;

means for allowing selection a particular image plane of the 3D MRI volume data from the 3D image;

means for calculating a 2D image corresponding to the selected image plane from the 3D MRI volume data;

means for allowing definition of a region of interest around a selected blood vessel in the 2D image, refining the region of interest to obtain the border of the selected blood vessel, and calculating a center point of the blood vessel;

means for deriving a set of center points of the selected blood vessel from the 3D MRI volume data as the selected image plane is moved generally along the length of the selected blood vessel; and

,

means for defining a location and slice orientation for phase contrast magnetic resonance angiography corresponding to a selected pair of the identified center points.

The apparatus of claim 11 further comprising mean for allowing selection of a particular image plane of the 3D MRI volume data from a set of available image planes, wherein the selected image plane is the one most nearly perpendicular to the direction of blood flow within the selected blood vessel.

13. The apparatus of claim 11 further comprising means for refining the region of interest to obtain the border of the selected blood vessel by image segmentation using thresholding.

14. The apparatus of claim 11 further comprising:

means for fitting the derived center points of the blood vessel to one or more lines;

means for allowing selection of the line of the one or more lines with the maximum length; and

,

means for defining a location and slice orientation for phase contrast magnetic resonance angiography corresponding to a center and an endpoint of the selected line.

15. The apparatus of claim 11 further comprising:

means for allowing the drawing of the region of interest in the 3D image of the patient'"'"'s vasculature as correlated from the region of interest in the 2D image; and

,

means for allowing the image plane to be moved generally along the length of the selected blood vessel by moving the region of interest along the selected blood vessel in the 3D image and correlating the moved region of interest to an image plane of the 3D volume data.

The apparatus of claim 11 further comprising means for constructing the 3D image of a portion of the patient'"'"'s vasculature from the 3D MRI volume data by generating a polygonal mesh corresponding to the surfaces of the blood vessels in the 3D MRI volume data using a marching cube algorithm.

17. The apparatus of claim 16 further comprising means for converting the polygonal mesh into a 3D scenegraph object.

18. The apparatus of claim 17 further comprising means for rotating, translating, and zooming in and out of the 3D scenegraph object to select a region of interest and image plane.

19. The apparatus of claim 11 further comprising means for calculating a cross-sectional area of the selected blood vessel.

20. The apparatus of claim 19 further comprising:

means for performing phase contrast magnetic resonance angiography using the selected location and slice orientation; and

,

means for calculating a blood flow through the selected blood vessel.
