Abstract

An image display device includes a distance detecting unit for detecting a distance from an outputting signal out of a sensor unit to a viewer, an angle detecting unit for detecting an angle of the outputting signal out of the sensor unit relative to a holding position by a viewer, an approaching state detecting unit for detecting a state how the viewer is approaching the image display device, a display switching controlling unit for displaying an image on an image display unit by obtaining the image based on the detecting result of the approaching state detecting unit, a marker generating unit for generating a marker image to display an approaching position on the image to the viewer, and a sending/receiving unit for sending and receiving necessary image data to and from a magnified image database and a tilt variation close-up image database.

Claims

1. An image display device for displaying an image of a subject, comprising:

a distance detecting unit operable to detect, as a viewing distance, a distance between a viewer and said image display device;

an angle detecting unit operable to detect, as a viewing direction, one of an angle of said image display device as opposed to the angle of the viewer, and a moving direction of said image display device relative to the viewer; and

a display switching controlling unit operable to switch between a first display mode and a second display mode based on the viewing distance, and to display the image of the subject corresponding to one of the first display mode and the second display mode, wherein the first display mode changes a display magnification based on the viewing distance, and displays the image of the subject, and the second display mode displays the images with different directions of normal on the surface of the subject based on the viewing direction.

2. The image display device according to claim 1, further comprising

an approaching state detecting unit operable to calculate a display magnification of the image based on the viewing distance.

3. The image display device according to claim 2,

wherein said approaching state detecting unit is operable to calculate the display magnification (a) as one magnification, by assuming that the subject is located at a predetermined distance, in a case where the viewing distance is not greater than the predetermined distance, and (b) as less than one magnification, by assuming that the subject is located beyond the predetermined distance, in a case where the viewing distance is greater than the predetermined distance, and

said display switching controlling unit is operable to display the image of the subject in the first display mode in a case where the display magnification calculated by said approaching state detecting unit is less than one magnification, and to display the image of the subject in the second display mode in a case where the display magnification is one magnification.

4. The image display device according to claim 1

wherein, in the first display mode, said display switching controlling unit is operable to select an image of a part of the subject based on the display magnification and the viewing direction, and display the selected image.

5. The image display device according to claim 4,

wherein the part of the subject is one of predetermined areas, and

in the first display mode, said display switching controlling

unit is operable to select an image in the area out of the plurality of areas based on the viewing direction and the display magnification, and to display the selected image.

6. The image display device according to claim 1, further comprising

in the first display mode, a marker generating unit operable to display a first marker indicating one of the predetermined areas, and to display a second marker based on the viewing direction and the display magnification,

wherein said display switching controlling unit is operable to select one area out of the plurality of areas depending on a positional relation between the first marker and the second marker.

7. The image display device according to claim 6,

wherein said marker generating unit is operable to superimpose the first marker on an entire image of the subject beforehand, and to display the superimposed image.

8. The image display device according to claim 6,

wherein said marker generating unit is operable to superimpose the first marker on an entire image of the subject in a case where the second marker approaches the area indicated by the first marker, and to display the superimposed image.

9. The image display device according to claim 1,

wherein said display switching controlling unit is operable to display, in the second display mode, the image with different directions of normal on the surface of the subject based on the viewing direction and a lighting condition.

10. The image display device according to claim 1,

wherein said display switching controlling unit is operable to display, in the second display mode, an image shown by tilting the direction of normal on the surface of the subject in two degrees of freedom under a fixed lighting.

11. The image display device according to claim 1,

wherein said display switching controlling unit is operable to display, in the second display mode, a computer graphics image, the computer graphics image is generated by rendering an optical model which describes one of reflection, scattering and transmission of light on the surface of the subject, and the rendering is executed under a fixed lighting to a surface of one of an arbitrary plane and a curved surface.

12. The image display device according to claim 11,

wherein the optical model is a model calculated by using one of the bidirectional reflectance distribution function of the subject surface, the bidirectional surface scattering distribution function of the subject surface and the bidirectional texture function of the subject surface, and

said display switching controlling unit is operable to display, in the second display mode, a computer graphics image, the computer graphics image is generated by rendering the optical model, and the rendering is executed under the fixed lighting to a surface of one of an arbitrary plane and a curved surface.

13. The image display device according to claim 11,

wherein the optical model is a model calculated by using one of the bidirectional reflectance distribution function of the subject surface using viewing distance as a parameter, the bidirectional surface scattering distribution function of the subject surface using viewing distance as a parameter and the bidirectional texture function of the subject surface using viewing distance as a parameter, and

said display switching controlling unit is operable to display, in the second display mode, a computer graphics image, the computer graphics image is generated by rendering the optical model, and the rendering is executed under a fixed lighting to a surface of one of an arbitrary plane and a curved surface.

14. The image display device according to claim 1,

wherein said display switching controlling unit is operable to display, in the second display mode, a magnified image of the subject based on the viewing distance.

19. An imaging device for said image display device according to claim 1, said imaging device comprising:

a stage structure which tilts by an angle in two degrees of freedom and rotates by an angle in one degree of freedom relative to the subject;

a lighting unit operable to vary by an angle in one degree of freedom; and

a camera unit operable to vary by a distance in one degree of freedom,

wherein said imaging device measures a value of a bidirectional texture function of an image of a part of the subject using the variation of the viewing distance as a parameter.

15. An image display system for displaying on an image display device an image of a subject stored in a server device,

said image display device includes:

a distance detecting unit operable to detect, as a viewing distance, a distance between a viewer and said image display device;

an angle detecting unit operable to detect, as a viewing direction, one of an angle of said image display device as opposed to the angle of the viewer, and a moving direction of said image display device relative to the viewer;

a display switching controlling unit operable to switch between a first display mode and a second display mode based on the viewing distance, to request an image of the subject corresponding to one of the first display mode and the second display mode, and to display the image of the subject received upon the request, wherein the first display mode changes a display magnification based on the viewing distance, and displays the image of the subject, and the second display mode displays the images with different directions of normal on the surface of the subject based on the viewing direction; and

a sending/receiving unit operable to send an image request signal to said server device based on the request, and to receive an image based on the image request signal via a network,

said server device to which the network is connected, includes;

a subject database which stores the entire image of the subject, and sends the image based on the image request signal;

a magnified image database which stores an image of a part of a subject according to a display magnification, and sends the image based on the image request signal; and

a tilt variation close-up image database which stores a tilt variation close-up image generated by tilting, to the direction of normal, the image of the part of the subject, and sends the image based on the image request signal.

16. The image display system according to claim 15,

wherein said server device further includes

a BTF database which stores a bidirectional texture function for the image of the part of the subject.

17. The image display system according to claim 15,

wherein said server device further includes

a distance variable BTF database which stores the bidirectional texture function for the image of the part of the subject using variation of the viewing distance as a parameter.

18. The image display system according to claim 17

wherein, in said server device, the bidirectional texture function for the image of the part of the subject using the variation of the viewing distance as the parameter is a function using a position on the subject for the image of the part of the subject, the viewing distance, a lighting angle and the viewing direction as parameters.

20. An image display method for displaying an image of a subject, comprising:

a distance detecting step of detecting, as a viewing distance, a distance between a viewer and said image display device;

an angle detecting step of detecting, as a viewing direction, one of an angle of said image display device as opposed to the angle of the viewer, and a moving direction of said image display device relative to the viewer; and

a display switching controlling step of switching between a first display mode and a second display mode based on the viewing distance, and displaying an image of the subject corresponding to one of the first display mode and the second display mode, wherein the first display mode changes a display magnification based on the viewing distance and displays the image of the subject, and the second display mode displays the images with different directions of normal on the surface of the subject based on the viewing direction.

21. A program for displaying an image of a subject, said program causing a computer to execute:

a distance detecting step of detecting, as a viewing distance, a distance between a viewer and said image display device;

an angle detecting step of detecting, as a viewing direction, one of an angle of said image display device as opposed to the angle of the viewer, and a moving direction of said image display device relative to the viewer; and

a display switching controlling step of switching between a first display mode and a second display mode based on the viewing distance, and displaying an image of the subject corresponding to one of the first display mode and the second display mode, wherein the first display mode changes a display magnification based on the viewing distance and displays the image of the subject, and the second display mode displays the images with different directions of normal on the surface of the subject based on the viewing direction.
