Abstract

A method for transferring data from a first switch to a second switch selectively by line-switching or by packet-switching as wellas to a switch for carrying out the method. Data packets are thereby first transferred packet-switched through a packet-switching network to the second switch. With the presence of a corresponding control signal a line-switching connection is established from the first switch to the second switch and the data are then transferred through this connection. Where applicable a renewed changeover to a packet-switching transfer is carried out. A flexible packet-switching or line-switching data transfer linked with dynamic costs between the junctions of a telecommunications network is enabled.

Claims

1. A method of maintaining a predetermined quality of service level of data transfer from a first end terminal to a second end terminal over a packet switching network, comprising the steps of:

monitoring a quality of service parameter of said packet switching network;

comparing a monitored quality of service parameter with a predefined threshold; and

transferring data from said first end terminal to said second end terminal over a line switching network in response to said control signal when a monitored quality of service parameter crosses said predefined threshold.

2. The method of claim 1, wherein said step of monitoring is carried out during a data transfer set-up procedure between said first end terminal and said second end terminal.

3. The method of claim 1, wherein said step of monitoring is carried out during data transfer between said first end terminal and said second end terminal.

4. The method of claim 1, wherein said quality of service parameter comprises a data transmission delay time.

5. The method of claim 1, wherein said quality of service parameter comprises a transmission bandwidth.

6. The method of claim 1, wherein said quality of service parameter comprises a build-up of data packets for transmission.

7. A method of maintaining a predetermined quality of service level of data transfer from a first end terminal to a second end terminal over a packet switching network, comprising the steps of:

receiving a control signal that is indicative of a preselected quality of service parameter of said packet switching network crossing over a predefined threshold; and

transferring data from said first end terminal to said second end terminal over a line switching network in response to said control signal.

8. The method of claim 7, wherein said control signal is developed by a network management system.

9. The method of claim 7, wherein said control signal is received during a data transfer set-up procedure between said first end terminal and said second end terminal.

10. The method of claim 7, wherein said control signal is received during data transfer between said first end terminal and said second end terminal.
