Abstract

A telephone includes logic to enable the telephone and a structured voice interaction system to exchange navigation information and commands via a data channel connection between the telephone and the structured voice interaction system, the navigation information coordinated with voice prompts and one or more navigation commands exchanged via a voice channel connection. The telephone stores representations of one or more navigation commands provided from the telephone to the structured voice interaction system.

115. A method comprising:

establishing a voice channel connection with a structured voice interaction system;

establishing a data channel connection with the structured voice interaction system;

providing one or more navigation commands to the structured voice interaction system over either or both of the voice or data channel connections; and

a calling device storing a stored representation of the one or more navigation commands.

116. The method of claim 115, wherein establishing a data channel connection with the structured voice interaction system further comprises:

establishing at least one of a short message service connection, an enhanced message service connection, or a multimedia message service connection.

117. The method of claim 115, further comprising:

receiving over the data channel navigation information for the structured voice interaction system, the data channel navigation information provided by the structured voice interaction system, the data channel navigation information coordinated with navigation information provided by the structured voice interaction system over the voice channel.

118. The method of claim 117, wherein receiving over the data channel navigation information for the structured voice interaction system further comprises:

receiving navigation information for levels of the structured voice interaction system other than or in addition to a current level of the structured voice interaction system.

119. The method of claim 117, wherein receiving over the data channel navigation information for the structured voice interaction system further comprises:

receiving navigation information for at least a level of the structured voice interaction system that results from providing one or more navigation commands to the structured voice interaction system.

120. The method of claim 117, wherein receiving over the data channel navigation information for the structured voice interaction system further comprises:

receiving over the data channel navigation information representing one or more shortcuts of the structured voice interaction system.

121. A telephone comprising:

logic to enable the telephone and a structured voice interaction system to exchange navigation information and commands via a data channel connection between the telephone and the structured voice interaction system, the navigation information coordinated with voice prompts and one or more navigation commands exchanged via a voice channel connection; and

logic to cause storage by the telephone of stored representations of one or more navigation commands provided from the telephone to the structured voice interaction system.

The telephone of claim 121, wherein the logic to enable the telephone and the structured voice interaction system to exchange navigation information and commands via a data channel connection between the telephone and the structured voice interaction system, the navigation information coordinated with voice prompts and one or more navigation commands exchanged via the voice channel connection further comprises:

logic to receive and process one or more spoken words or touch tones via the voice channel connection, or one or more navigation commands via the data channel connection, and to provide appropriate voice prompts and navigation information in response.

123. The telephone of claim 121, wherein the logic to enable the telephone and the structured voice interaction system to exchange navigation information and commands via a data channel connection between the telephone and the structured voice interaction system further comprises:

logic to enable the telephone and the structured voice interaction system to employ shortcuts that when applied to the structured voice interaction system result in bypassing at least one level of the structured voice interaction system.

124. The telephone of claim 123, wherein the representations of relative navigation actions from a particular level and/or state further comprises:

at least one of repeat entire navigation path last taken, repeat navigation command or commands last taken from a particular level and/or state, go up or back one or more levels, go down or forward one or more levels, or jump to a level or state.

125. The telephone of claim 121, wherein the representations of one or more navigation commands further comprise:

at least one indication that the one or more navigation commands are most recently used overall or in a particular context, or most frequently used overall or in a particular context.

126. The telephone of claim 121, wherein the representations of one or more navigation commands further comprise:

representations associated with at least one task, topic, or goal.

127. The telephone of claim 121, wherein the representations of one or more navigation commands further comprise:

one or more recorded caller voice responses to the structured voice interaction system or representations thereof.

128. The telephone of claim 121, wherein the representations of one or more navigation commands further comprise:

one or more recorded voice channel tones or representations thereof.

129. A structured voice interaction system comprising:

logic to communicate one or more voice prompts to a caller via a voice channel connection;

logic to communicate navigation information for the structured voice interaction system to the caller via a data channel connection; and

logic to provide to the caller navigation information including stored navigation history for the caller.

130. The structured voice interaction system of claim 129, wherein the logic to communicate navigation information for the structured voice interaction system to the caller via a data channel connection further comprises:

logic to communicate navigation information to the caller via at least one of a short message service connection, an enhanced message service connection, or a multimedia message service connection.

131. The structured voice interaction system of claim 129, further comprising:

logic to authenticate a caller; and

logic to provide stored navigation history for the caller to the caller as a result of authentication of the caller.

132. A telephone comprising:

logic to enable the telephone and the structured voice interaction system to exchange navigation information and commands via a data channel connection between the telephone and the structured voice interaction system, the navigation information coordinated with voice prompts and one or more navigation commands exchanged via a voice channel connection; and

logic to receive from the structured voice interaction system and to store one or more representations of one or more navigation commands that may be applied to the structured voice interaction system.

The telephone of claim 132, wherein the logic to enable the telephone and the structured voice interaction system to exchange navigation information and commands via a data channel connection between the telephone and the structured voice interaction system, the navigation information coordinated with voice prompts and one or more navigation commands exchanged via the voice channel connection further comprises:

logic to receive and process one or more spoken words or touch tones via the voice channel connection, or one or more navigation commands via the data channel connection, and to provide appropriate voice prompts and navigation information in response.

134. The telephone of claim 132, wherein the logic to enable the telephone and the structured voice interaction system to exchange navigation information and commands via a data channel connection between the telephone and the structured voice interaction system further comprises:

logic to enable the telephone and the structured voice interaction system to employ shortcuts that when applied to the structured voice interaction system result in bypassing at least one level of the structured voice interaction system.

135. The telephone of claim 132, wherein the representations of one or more navigation commands further comprise:

representations associated with at least one task, topic, or goal.

136. The telephone of claim 132, wherein the representations of one or more navigation commands further comprise:

one or more recorded caller voice responses to the structured voice interaction system or representations thereof.

137. The telephone of claim 132, wherein the representations of one or more navigation commands further comprise:

one or more recorded voice channel tones or representations thereof.

138. A method comprising:

receiving navigation information for a structured voice interaction system from a source other than the structured voice interaction system;

establishing a voice channel connection with the structured voice interaction system;

establishing a data channel connection with the structured voice interaction system; and

providing one or more navigation commands to the structured voice interaction system over either or both of the voice or data channel connections.

139. The method of claim 138, wherein establishing a data channel connection with the structured voice interaction system further comprises:

establishing at least one of a short message service connection, an enhanced message service connection, or a multimedia message service connection.
