Use of location awareness ot establish communications with a target clinician in a healthcare environment
First Claim
1. A method of communicating in a healthcare establishment, said method comprising:
- receiving data indicative of a desire to communicate with a target clinician;
receiving data regarding a wirelessly detectable tag associated with the target clinician;
determining a location of the target clinician within the healthcare establishment based at least in part on the data regarding the wirelessly detectable tag;
applying an unavailability policy to obtain an outcome indicating whether the target clinician is available for communication, the unavailability policy being a function of the location of the target clinician; and
responsive to the outcome indicating that the target clinician is available for communication, performing an action to cause communication with the target clinician.

Abstract
A method of communicating in a healthcare establishment. The method comprises receiving data indicative of a desire to communicate with a target clinician; receiving data regarding a wirelessly detectable tag associated with the target clinician; determining a location of the target clinician within the healthcare establishment based at least in part on the data regarding the wirelessly detectable tag; applying an unavailability policy to obtain an outcome indicating whether the target clinician is available for communication, the unavailability policy being a function of the location of the target clinician; and responsive to the outcome indicating that the target clinician is available for communication, performing an action to cause communication with the target clinician. In this way, time and effort will not be spent attempting to communicate with clinicians that are not considered to be available, even though they may be registered for duty.

50. A system for communicating in a healthcare establishment, said system comprising:
-
a first functional entity adapted to detect when communication with a target clinician is desired;
a second functional entity adapted to determine, based at least in part on data regarding a wirelessly detectable tag associated with the target clinician, the location of the target clinician within the healthcare establishment;
a third functional entity adapted to determine, based at least in part on the location of the target clinician, whether the target clinician is available for communication; and
a fourth functional entity adapted to cause communication with the target clinician if the third functional entity has determined that the target clinician is available for communication.

51. A computer-readable storage medium comprising a program element for execution by a computing device to communicate in a healthcare establishment, the program element including:
-
computer-readable program code for detecting when communication with a target clinician is desired;
computer-readable program code for determining, based at least in part on data regarding a wirelessly detectable tag associated with the target clinician, the location of the target clinician within the healthcare establishment;
computer-readable program code for determine, based at least in part on the location of the target clinician, whether the target clinician is available for communication; and
computer-readable program code for causing communication with the target clinician if the third functional entity has determined that the target clinician is available for communication.
