Abstract

A wireless phone system comprises a base station and a wireless handset that selectively communicates with the base station using at least one of first and second wireless modes. The second wireless mode has a greater range and higher operating power than the first wireless mode.

Claims

1. A wireless phone system comprising:

a base station;

a wireless handset that selectively communicates with said base station using at least one of first and second wireless modes,

wherein said second wireless mode has a greater range and higher operating power than said first wireless mode.

2. The wireless phone system of claim 1 wherein said base station comprises a control module that selectively transitions said base station between said first and second wireless modes.

3. The wireless phone system of claim 1 wherein said wireless handset comprises a control module that selectively transitions said wireless handset between said first and second wireless modes.

4. The wireless phone system of claim 3 wherein said control module selects one of said first and second wireless modes for operation based on a wireless signal strength between said base station and said wireless handset.

5. The wireless phone system of claim 2 wherein said control module selects one of said first and second wireless modes for operation based on a wireless signal strength between said wireless handset and said base station.

6. The wireless phone system of claim 3 wherein said control module selects one of said first and second wireless modes for operation based on a data error rate between said base station and said wireless handset.

7. The wireless phone system of claim 2 wherein said control module selects one of said first and second wireless modes for operation based on a data error rate between said wireless handset and said base station.

8. The wireless phone system of claim 1 wherein said first wireless mode is Bluetooth compliant.

9. The wireless phone system of claim 1 wherein said second wireless mode operates at least one of 900 MHz, 2.4 GHz and/or 5.8 GHz.

10. The wireless phone system of claim 2 wherein said base station includes:

a first transceiver that communicates with said control module and that transmits and receives wireless signals using said first wireless mode; and

a second transceiver that communicates with said control module and that transmits and receives wireless signals using said second wireless mode.

11. The wireless phone system of claim 3 wherein said wireless handset includes:

a first transceiver that communicates with said control module and that transmits and receives wireless signals using said first wireless mode; and

a second transceiver that communicates with said control module and that transmits and receives wireless signals using said second wireless mode.

12. The wireless phone system of claim 2 wherein said base station includes a transceiver that communicates with said control module and that selectively transmits and receives wireless signals using said first or said second wireless mode.

13. The wireless phone system of claim 3 wherein said wireless handset includes a transceiver that communicates with said control module and that selectively transmits and receives wireless signals using said first or second wireless mode.

14. The wireless handset of claim 1 wherein at least one of said first or second wireless modes is complaint with IEEE 802.11, 802.11a, 802.11b, 802.11g, and 802.11n.

15. A wireless phone system comprising:

base station means for providing an external phone connection;

wireless handset means for selectively communicating with said base station using at least one of first and second wireless modes,

wherein said second wireless mode has a greater range and higher operating power than said first wireless mode.

16. The wireless phone system of claim 15 wherein said base station means comprises control means for selectively transitioning said base station means between said first and second wireless modes.

17. The wireless phone system of claim 15 wherein said wireless handset means comprises control means for selectively transitioning said wireless handset means between said first and second wireless modes.

18. The wireless phone system of claim 17 wherein said control means selects one of said first and second wireless modes for operation based on a wireless signal strength between said base station means and said wireless handset means.

19. The wireless phone system of claim 16 wherein said control means selects one of said first and second wireless modes for operation based on a wireless signal strength between said wireless handset means and said base station means.

20. The wireless phone system of claim 17 wherein said control means selects one of said first and second wireless modes for operation based on a data error rate between said base station means and said wireless handset means.

21. The wireless phone system of claim 16 wherein said control means selects one of said first and second wireless modes for operation based on a data error rate between said wireless handset means and said base station means.

22. The wireless phone system of claim 15 wherein said first wireless mode is Bluetooth compliant.

23. The wireless phone system of claim 15 wherein said second wireless mode operates at least one of 900 MHz, 2.4 GHz and/or 5.8 GHz.

24. The wireless phone system of claim 16 wherein said base station means includes:

first transceiver means for communicating with said control means and for transmitting and receiving wireless signals using said first wireless mode; and

second transceiver means for communicating with said control means and for transmitting and receiving wireless signals using said second wireless mode.

25. The wireless phone system of claim 17 wherein said wireless handset means includes:

first transceiver means for communicating with said control means and for transmitting and receiving wireless signals using said first wireless mode; and

second transceiver means for communicating with said control means and for transmitting and receiving wireless signals using said second wireless mode.

26. The wireless phone system of claim 16 wherein said base station means includes transceiver means for communicating with said control means and for selectively transmitting and receiving wireless signals using said first or said second wireless mode.

27. The wireless phone system of claim 17 wherein said wireless handset means includes transceiver means for communicating with said control means and for selectively transmitting and receiving wireless signals using said first or said second wireless mode.

28. The wireless handset means of claim 15 wherein at least one of said first or second wireless modes is complaint with IEEE 802.11, 802.11a, 802.11b, 802.11g, and 802.11n.

29. A method for operating a wireless phone system, comprising:

providing a base station and a wireless handset;

selectively communicating between said wireless handset and said base station using at least one of first and second wireless modes; and

selecting said second wireless mode to have a greater range and higher operating power than said first wireless mode.

30. The method of claim 29 further comprising selectively transitioning said base station between said first and second wireless modes.

31. The method of claim 29 further comprising selectively transitioning said wireless handset between said first and second wireless modes.

32. The method of claim 31 further comprising selecting one of said first and second wireless modes for operation based on a wireless signal strength between said base station and said wireless handset.

33. The method of claim 30 further comprising selecting one of said first and second wireless modes for operation based on a wireless signal strength between said wireless handset and said base station.

34. The method of claim 31 further comprising selecting one of said first and second wireless modes for operation based on a data error rate between said base station and said wireless handset.

35. The method of claim 30 further comprising selecting one of said first and second wireless modes for operation based on a data error rate between said wireless handset and said base station.

36. The method of claim 29 wherein said first wireless mode is Bluetooth compliant.

37. The method of claim 29 wherein said second wireless mode operates at least one of 900 MHz, 2.4 GHz and/or 5.8 GHz.

38. The method of claim 29 wherein at least one of said first or second wireless modes is complaint with IEEE 802.11, 802.11a, 802.11b, 802.11g, and 802.11n.
