Abstract

A system and method for allowing users to specify using commonly available mobile devices such as mobile telephones, transactions to be performed is described. More particularly, the invention provides a transaction interface layer which uses a predetermined lightweight message syntax to allow a user to specify transactions to be performed. The particular transactions envisaged are financial transactions such as stock or share trades, but the invention also allows other transaction types, such as information transactions, to be specified. When an information transaction is specified, the system of the invention acts to filter received information in accordance with a user-specified transaction, and to forward filtered information to a user mobile device as appropriate.

Claims

1. A transaction interface system comprising:

an input arranged to receive user messages sent via a mobile telecommunications network from user mobile devices;

a message parser arranged to parse said user messages received at said input in accordance with a predetermined lightweight message syntax, to determine the information content of each message; and

a transaction controller arranged to perform one or more user transactions in response to the information contained within said user messages as determined by said message parser.

2. A transaction interface system according to claim 1, wherein one or more of the user messages contain information specifying a financial transaction to be performed, and wherein the transaction controller is arranged to perform the financial transaction in response to the user message.

3. A transaction interface system according to claim 2, wherein the financial transaction is a purchase or sale of stocks and/or shares, and wherein the transaction controller is arranged to interface with a brokerage system to cause the transaction to be performed.

4. A transaction interface system according to claim 1, wherein, if the user transaction cannot be performed upon receipt of the message ordering the transaction, the transaction information is buffered in data storage until such time as said transaction may be performed.

A transaction interface system according to claim 1, wherein one or more of the user messages contain data specifying information to be forwarded to a user mobile device, the system further comprising a second input arranged to receive information content from an information source, the transaction controller being further arranged to compare the received information content at said second input with the user specified information, and to forward received information content to the user mobile device via the mobile telecommunications network in the event that it corresponds to the user specified information.

A transaction interface system according to claim 5, wherein one or more of the user messages additionally contain information filter data, the transaction controller being arranged to apply said filter data to one or more predetermined logical conditions to determine if received information content corresponding to user specified information content should be sent to the user mobile device, in dependence on the logical conditions.

7. A transaction interface system according to claim 5, wherein the received information content is forwarded to a user in any message format belonging to the group of formats comprising:

short message service (SMS) messages, multimedia message service (MMS) messages, or email messages.

8. A transaction interface system according to claim 1, wherein the user messages are in a format of any one belonging to the group of formats comprising:

short message service (SMS) messages, multimedia message service (MMS) messages, or email messages.

9. A transaction interface method comprising the steps of:

receiving user messages sent via a mobile telecommunications network from user mobile devices;

parsing said received user messages in accordance with a predetermined lightweight message syntax, to determine the information content of each message; and

performing one or more user transactions in response to the information contained within said user messages.

10. A transaction interface method according to claim 9, wherein one or more of the user messages contain information specifying a financial transaction to be performed, and wherein the financial transaction is performed in response to the user message.

11. A transaction interface method according to claim 10, wherein the financial transaction is a purchase or sale of stocks and/or shares, the method further comprising the step of interfacing with a brokerage system to cause the transaction to be performed.

12. A transaction interface method according to claim 9, wherein, if the user transaction cannot be performed upon receipt of the message ordering the transaction, the transaction information is buffered until such time as said transaction may be performed.

13. A transaction interface method according to claim 9, wherein one or more of the user messages contain data specifying information to be forwarded to a user mobile device, the method further comprising:

receiving information content from an information source;

comparing the received information content with the user specified information;

forwarding received information content to the user mobile device via the mobile telecommunications network in the event that it corresponds to the user specified information.

14. A transaction interface method according to claim 13, wherein one or more of the user messages additionally contain information filter data, the method further comprising:

applying said filter data to one or more predetermined logical conditions to determine if received information content corresponding to user specified information content should be forwarded to the user mobile device, in dependence on the logical conditions.

15. A transaction interface method according to claim 13, wherein the received information content is forwarded to a user in any message format belonging to the group of formats comprising:

short message service (SMS) messages, multimedia message service (MMS) messages, or email messages.

16. A transaction interface method according to claim 9, wherein the user messages are in a format of any one belonging to the group of formats comprising:

short message service (SMS) messages, multimedia message service (MMS) messages, or email messages.

17. A computer program or suite of computer programs arranged such that when executed by a computer system they cause the computer system to operate in accordance with the method of claim 9.

18. A computer readable storage medium storing a computer program or one or more of the suite of computer programs according to claim 17.
