Abstract

Systems, methods and apparatuses for managing ground transportation in a geographical area are disclosed. A system in accordance with the present invention comprises a graphical information systems (GIS) database that stores traffic data related to the geographical area, wherein the GIS database includes at least one node representing at least one geographical location within the geographic area and at least one arc representing at least one street within the geographic area, an impedance calculation engine, coupled to the GIS database, that determines impedances associated with the at least one node and at least one arc, and a data formatter, coupled to the GIS database and to the impedance calculation engine, for formatting incoming data used by the impedance calculation engine, wherein the impedance calculation engine updates impedances associated with the at least one node and the at least one arc based on inputs from the GIS database.

Claims

1. An interactive communications system for managing ground transportation in a geographical area, comprising:

a graphical information systems (GIS) database that stores traffic data related to the geographical area, wherein the GIS database includes at least one node representing at least one geographical location within the geographic area and at least one arc representing at least one street within the geographic area;

an impedance calculation engine, coupled to the GIS database, that determines impedances associated with the at least one node and at least one arc; and

a data formatter, coupled to the GIS database and to the impedance calculation engine, for formatting incoming data used by the impedance calculation engine, wherein the impedance calculation engine updates impedances associated with the at least one node and the at least one arc based on inputs from the GIS database.

2. The interactive communications system of claim 1, further comprising a routing tool, coupled to the GIS database, for computing a route between two points in the geographical area based on the impedances determined by the impedance calculation engine.

3. The interactive communications system of claim 2, wherein the route is computed by minimizing the impedances of any arc and node data from the GIS database is optimized to maximize a traffic flow along the route.

4. The interactive communications system of claim 3, wherein the impedances are determined based on one or more of:

time of day, road sensors, and real time traffic data.

5. The interactive communications system of claim 1, further comprising an evacuation route planning tool, coupled to the GIS database, for determining an emergency evacuation route.

6. The interactive communications system of claim 5, wherein the evacuation route planning tool further determines a response route for emergency personnel.

7. The interactive communications system of claim 4, wherein the system creates cluster data.

8. The interactive communications system of claim 4, wherein the impedances are verified using feedback.

9. The interactive communications system of claim 4, wherein impedances are calculated using data collected from at least one other vehicle travelling in the geographic area.

10. The interactive communications system of claim 4, wherein a new route is determined based on at least one data point received after the route was originally determined.

17. The apparatus of claim 4, the programs performed by the computer further creating cluster data.

11. An apparatus for determining evacuation routes for an emergency situation using a geographical information systems (GIS) database that represents a geographical area, wherein the GIS database includes at least one node representing at least one geographical location within the geographic area and at least one arc representing at least one street within the geographic area, comprising:

a computer system having a memory and a data storage device coupled thereto;

one or more programs, performed by the computer, for;

determining impedances associated with the at least one node and at least one arc; and

formatting incoming data, and

updating impedances associated with the at least one node and the at least one arc based on inputs from the GIS database.

12. The apparatus of claim 11, the programs performed by the computer further performing computing a route between two points in the geographical area based on the determined impedances.

13. The apparatus of claim 12, wherein the route is computed by minimizing the impedances of any arc and node data from the GIS database is optimized to maximize a traffic flow along the route.

14. The apparatus of claim 13, wherein the impedances are determined based on one or more of:

time of day, road sensors, and real time traffic data.

15. The apparatus of claim 11, the programs performed by the computer further determining an emergency evacuation route.

16. The apparatus of claim 15, the programs performed by the computer further determining a response route for emergency personnel.

18. The apparatus of claim 14, the programs performed by the computer further verifying the impedances using feedback.

19. The apparatus of claim 14, wherein impedances are calculated using data collected from at least one other vehicle travelling in the geographic area.

20. The apparatus of claim 14, the programs performed by the computer further determining a new route based on at least one data point received after the route was originally determined.
