Abstract

A one-time password (OTP) generator in combination with a conventional credit/debit card comprising a card having a magnetic bar stripe, raised imprint card numbers and name, expiration date and four digit code as are known in the art is provided. Full smart card functionality may also be provided. The card also includes a microprocessor and software, dedicated chip or a memory chip for generating the OTP. A visual and/or audio display is provided on the card to output the OTP to the user. The end user inputs the OTP to access the secured system. The credit/debit card functionality may be used apart from the OTP generator functionality.

Claims

1. An apparatus compromising:

a one-time password generator for generating a one-time password;

a display for displaying the one-time password;

a power source; and

an authentication device allowing the apparatus to be used as a credit/debit card.

2. The apparatus of claim 1 where the one-time password generator comprises a special purpose integrated circuit chip.

3. The apparatus of claim 1 where the one-time password generator comprises a microprocessor chip.

4. The apparatus of claim 1 where the one-time password generator generates the one-time password using a HOTP algorithm.

5. The apparatus of claim 1 where the one-time password generator generates the one-time password using a time/clock-based algorithm.

6. The apparatus of claim 1 where audio signals representing the one-time password are generated.

7. The apparatus of claim 1 wherein the authentication device comprises a coded magnetic stripe.

8. The apparatus of claim 1 wherein the authentication device includes a processor for storing information and a means for transmitting the information.

9. The apparatus of claim 1 further including raised numbers on said body.

10. The apparatus of claim 1 further including a physical contact interface for transmitting the one-time password.

11. The apparatus of claim 1 further including a body having the approximate size and shape of a credit/debit card.

12. A credit/debit card and one-time password generator, comprising:

a body the size and shape of a credit/debit card;

a one-time password generator for generating a one-time password;

a display for displaying the one-time password;

a power source; and

an authentication device for authenticating the use of the card as a credit/debit card.

13. The device of claim 12 where the authentication device includes a magnetic stripe.

14. The device of claim 12 wherein the authentication device includes a signature block.

15. The device of claim 12 wherein the authentication device includes a smart card processor.

16. The device of claim 12 wherein the authentication device includes a card number.

17. The apparatus of claim 12 where the one-time password generator comprises a special purpose integrated circuit chip.

18. The apparatus of claim 12 where the one-time password generator comprises a microprocessor chip.

19. The apparatus of claim 12 wherein the one-time password generator generates the one-time password using a HOTP algorithm.

20. The apparatus of claim 12 wherein the one-time password generator generates the one-time password using a time/clock-based algorithm.

21. A method for using a credit/debit card and one-time password generator comprising:

authenticating use of the card as a credit card;

generating a one-time password;

displaying the one-time password on the card; and

transmitting the one-time password to an authentication node.

22. The method of claim 21 where the one-time password is generated using a special purpose integrated circuit chip.

23. The method of claim 21 where the one-time password is generated using a microprocessor chip.

24. The method of claim 21 where the one-time password is generated using a HOTP algorithm.

25. The method of claim 21 where the one-time password is generated using a time/clock-based algorithm.

26. The method of claim 21 further generating audio signals representing the one-time password.

27. The method of claim 21 wherein the authenticating comprises using a coded magnetic stripe.

28. The method of claim 21 wherein the authenticating comprises using a processor on the card for storing and transmitting information.
