Abstract

Techniques are described for accurately measuring a density or other parameter of a fluid traveling through a vibratable conduit, using a flowmeter. The techniques involve obtaining measurements of a frequency of vibration of the conduit, as a function of a phase difference between two sensors measuring the vibration. Using the measurements, a corrected frequency corresponding to a zero phase difference can be estimated, and this corrected frequency can be used to perform density calculations. These techniques remove an undesirable dependency between the frequency/phase difference variables.

23. A flowmeter comprising:

a vibratable flowtube;

a driver connected to the flowtube and operable to impart motion to the flowtube;

a first sensor connected to a first portion of the flowtube and operable to sense a motion of the flowtube and generate a first sensor signal;

a second sensor connected to a second portion of the flowtube and operable to sense the motion of the flowtube and generate a second sensor signal; and

a controller operable to;

access a frequency correction that is determined based on a characteristic curve of frequency versus phase difference;

determine an apparent frequency of the motion from the first and second signal; and

adjust the apparent frequency based on the accessed frequency correction and a phase difference between the first sensor signal and the second sensor signal, thereby obtaining a corrected frequency.

24. The flowmeter of claim 23 wherein the controller is operable to determine a density of a material flowing through the flowtube based on the corrected frequency.

25. The flowmeter of claim 23 wherein the controller is operable to determine a mass flow rate of a material flowing through the flowtube based on the corrected frequency and the phase difference.

26. The flowmeter of claim 23 wherein the controller stores data indicative of the characteristic curve and determines the frequency correction based on the stored characteristic curve.

27. The flowmeter of claim 26 wherein the controller is configured to determine the frequency correction based on a linear regression.

28. The flowmeter of claim 26 wherein the controller is configured to determine the frequency correction based on a quadratic fit.

29. The flowmeter of claim 23 wherein the corrected frequency corresponds to a phase difference of zero.

30. The flowmeter of claim 23 wherein the controller is operable to store the frequency correction in conjunction with an operational parameter of the flowmeter, the operational parameter including at least one of:

a size of the vibratable flowtube, an orientation of the vibratable flowtube, a substance flowing through the vibratable flowtube, a type of the vibratable flowtube, and a temperature of the vibratable flowtube.

31. The flowmeter of claim 30 wherein the controller is operable to output the corrected frequency based on an input of one of the operational parameter.

32. A method comprising:

vibrating a flowtube containing a material;

determine an apparent frequency of the vibration of the flowtube;

access a frequency correction that is determined based on a characteristic curve of frequency versus phase difference; and

adjust the apparent frequency based on the accessed frequency correction and a phase difference between the first sensor signal and the second sensor signal, thereby obtaining a corrected frequency.

33. The method of claim 32 further comprising determining a parameter of the material contained in the flowtube based on the corrected frequency.

34. The method of claim 33 wherein determining the parameter comprises determining a density of the material.

35. The method of claim 33 wherein determining the parameter comprises determining a mass flow rate of the material.

36. The method of claim 33 wherein the corrected frequency corresponds to a phase difference of zero.

37. The method of claim 32 further comprising:

determining an operational parameter associated with an operation of a flowmeter; and

wherein accessing the frequency correction comprises accessing a frequency correction associated with the operational parameter.

38. The method of claim 37 wherein the operational parameter includes at least one of:

a size of the flowtube, an orientation of the flowtube, the material flowing through the flowtube, a type of the flowtube, and a temperature of the flowtube.

39. The method of claim 32 further comprising determining the frequency correction based on the characteristic curve of frequency versus phase difference.

40. A flowmeter controller comprising:

a measurement system operable to receive a first sensor signal and a second sensor signal and determine an apparent frequency of vibration of a flowtube based on the first sensor signal and the second sensor signal, the flowtube containing a material;

a frequency correction system operable to;

access a frequency correction that is determined based on a characteristic curve of frequency versus phase difference; and

adjust the apparent frequency based on the accessed frequency correction and a phase difference between the first sensor signal and the second sensor signal, thereby obtaining a corrected frequency; and

a flow parameter determination system operable to determine a parameter of the material based on the corrected frequency.

41. The controller of claim 40 wherein the parameter comprises a density of the material.

42. The controller of claim 40 wherein the parameter comprises a mass flow rate of the material.

43. The controller of claim 40 wherein the frequency correction system stores data indicative of the characteristic curve and determines the frequency correction based on the stored characteristic curve.
