Abstract

A storage device temporarily holds a surgical instrument within a body cavity of a patient during a surgical procedure. The storage device has a pouch with at least one compartment, and an opening for receiving at least one surgical instrument. The storage device has an attaching element joined to the pouch to removably attach the storage device to a structure within the body cavity of the patient. A method is also provided for temporarily storing a surgical instrument inside the body cavity of a patient.

Claims

1. A storage device for holding a surgical instrument within a body cavity of a patient during a surgical procedure, the storage device comprising:

a pouch having an opening and at least one compartment; and

an attaching element joined to the pouch;

wherein the storage device is removably attachable to a structure within the body cavity of the patient.

2. The storage device of claim 1, further comprising a closing element for holding the opening of the pouch in a closed configuration.

3. The storage device of claim 2, wherein the closing element is extendable through the body wall to the outside of the patient.

4. The storage device of claim 2, wherein the closing element comprises a string.

5. The storage device of claim 1, wherein the pouch has a plurality of compartments, and the compartments are formed by at least one partition.

6. The storage device of claim 1, further comprising a retaining element attached to the pouch, wherein the attaching element is joined to the retaining element.

7. The storage device of claim 1, wherein the pouch is made of polyvinylchloride film.

8. The storage device of claim 1, wherein the attaching element comprises a rod having a piercing tip and a plurality of teeth aligned along the length of the rod.

The storage device of claim 8, wherein the attaching element further comprises a button that is removably attachable to the teeth of the rod such that when the piercing tip is penetrated through the body wall so that the piercing tip and a portion of the rod extends outside the body wall, the button may be attached to the portion to retain the storage device on the body wall.

10. The storage device of claim 1, wherein the attaching element comprises a rod having a piercing tip and a plurality of holes aligned along the length of the rod.

The storage device of claim 10, wherein the attaching element further comprises a pin that is removably insertable into one of the holes of the rod such that when the piercing tip is penetrated through the body wall so that the piercing tip and a portion of the rod extends outside the body wall, the pin may be inserted into one of the holes to retain the storage device on the body wall.

12. The storage device of claim 1, wherein the attaching element comprises an elastic loop.

13. The storage device of claim 12, wherein the loop is removably attachable to a surgical instrument within the body cavity of the patient.

14. The storage device of claim 1, wherein the attaching element comprises a clip.

15. The storage device of claim 14, wherein the clip is removably attachable to a surgical instrument within the body cavity of the patient.

16. The storage device of claim 1, wherein the attaching element comprises a suture.

17. The storage device of claim 16, wherein the attaching element further comprises a surgical needle attached to the free end of the suture.

18. A storage device for temporarily holding a surgical instrument within a body of a patient during a surgical procedure, the storage device comprising:

a pouch with at least one compartment having an opening for receiving a surgical instrument;

a rod attached to the pouch and having a piercing tip, the rod including a channel extending therethrough;

a purse string retained by the pouch and positioned around the opening, the purse string having at least one free end passing through the channel such that when the piercing tip is penetrated through the body wall so that the piercing tip and a portion of the rod extends outside the body wall, the free end of the purse string may be pulled from outside of the body wall.

22. A method of temporarily storing a surgical instrument within a body cavity of a patient during a surgical procedure comprising:

providing a storage device for holding a surgical instrument within a body cavity of a patient during the surgical procedure, the retaining device comprising a pouch having an opening and at least one compartment, and an attaching element joined to the pouch;

wherein the pouch is removably attachable by the attaching element to a structure within the body cavity of the patient;

introducing the storage device into the body cavity of the patient via a surgical opening;

attaching the storage device to a structure within the body cavity of the patient;

storing a surgical instrument in the compartment of the storage device; and

removing the storage device from the body cavity of the patient.

19. The storage device of claim 21, wherein the attaching element further comprises a cap that may be attached to the rod to cover the piercing tip.

20. The storage device of claim 22, wherein the cap covers the portion of the rod extending on the outside of the body wall, thereby retaining the pouch against the inside of the body wall.

21. The storage device of claim 22, wherein the cap fits tightly on the rod, and may affix the free end of the purse string against the rod to hold the pouch in a closed configuration.
