A method is also provided for temporarily storing a surgical instrument inside the body cavity of a patient.

18. A storage device for temporarily holding a surgical instrument within a body of a patient during a surgical procedure, the storage device comprising:

a pouch with at least one compartment having an opening for receiving a surgical instrument;
a rod attached to the pouch and having a piercing tip, the rod including a channel extending therethrough;
a purse string retained by the pouch and positioned around the opening, the purse string having at least one free end passing through the channel such that when the piercing tip is penetrated through the body wall so that the piercing tip and a portion of the rod extends outside the body wall, the free end of the purse string may be pulled from outside of the body wall.

22. A method of temporarily storing a surgical instrument within a body cavity of a patient during a surgical procedure comprising:

providing a storage device for holding a surgical instrument within a body cavity of a patient during the surgical procedure, the retaining device comprising a pouch having an opening and at least one compartment, and an attaching element joined to the pouch;
wherein the pouch is removably attachable by the attaching element to a structure within the body cavity of the patient;
introducing the storage device into the body cavity of the patient via a surgical opening;
attaching the storage device to a structure within the body cavity of the patient;
storing a surgical instrument in the compartment of the storage device; and
