Abstract

An identification device that combines an antimicrobial coating with a printable substrate. For example, the invention includes a wristband with a face stock supporting indicia which are applied on (such as through thermal transfer printing) or through (such as through direct thermal printing) an antimicrobial layer. The antimicrobial layer is preferably a coating or varnish that is applied as the outermost layer and can bind with thermal transfer printing ink or supports pass through of direct thermal printing on a chemically receptive sublayer. The antimicrobial varnish includes varnish compounds and antimicrobial compounds such as a silver zeolite ion that is configured to react to moisture with a controlled release of microbial disinfectant. Preferably, the wristband is a hospital wristband bearing on-site printed identification indicia for a patient.

Claims

1. An identification device comprising:

a face stock;

a protective coating positioned at least one of proximate or adjacent to at least a portion of at least one surface of said face stock;

an antimicrobial coating positioned on at least a portion of said protective coating; and

indicia imprinted at least one of on or through said antimicrobial layer using a printing process.

2. The identification device according to claim 1, further comprising a thermal chemical imaging layer positioned between, and adjacent to, said face stock and said protective coating.

3. The identification device according to claim 2, wherein said thermal chemical imaging layer comprises at least one heat sensitive thermal imaging chemical capable of transferring said indicia onto said thermal chemical imaging layer using a direct thermal printing process.

4. The identification device according to claim 1, wherein said indicia is imprinted directly onto at least said antimicrobial coating using a thermal transfer printing process.

5. The identification device according to claim 1, wherein said antimicrobial coating comprises a silver zeolite compound.

6. The identification device according to claim 1, wherein said antimicrobial coating comprises a water-based varnish receptive to a printing process.

7. The identification device according to claims 1, wherein said antimicrobial coating comprises a Triclosan compound.

8. The identification device according to claim 1, wherein said protective coating is hydrophobic.

9. The identification device according to claim 1, wherein said face stock comprises a flexible material.

10. The identification device according to claim 1, wherein said face stock comprises at least one of a polypropylene, polyester, polyethylene, and woven nylon material.

11. The identification device according to claim 1, wherein said antimicrobial layer is ultraviolet curable.

12. The identification device according to claim 1, further comprising a radio frequency identification device.

13. The identification device according to claim 1, wherein the identification device is a wristband.

14. The identification device according to claim 12, wherein the wristband comprises a pair of long edges, a pair of short edges, a body portion and a connector portion, and wherein said connector portion is shorter and narrower than said body portion.

15. The identification device according to claim 13, wherein said connector portion is an adhesive patch.

16. The identification device according to claim 14, wherein said antimicrobial coating and said indicia are located on at least a portion of the body portion.

17. The identification device according to claim 1, wherein said indicia comprises identifying indicia for a patient.

19. The identification device according to claim 17, further comprising a protective layer positioned between, and adjacent to, said thermal chemical imaging layer and said antimicrobial layer.

20. The identification device according to claim 17, wherein said thermal chemical imaging layer comprises at least one heat sensitive thermal imaging chemical capable of transferring said indicia onto said thermal chemical imaging layer using a direct thermal printing process.

21. The identification device according to claim 17, wherein said antimicrobial coating comprises a silver zeolite compound.

22. The identification device according to claims 17, wherein said antimicrobial coating comprises a Triclosan compound.

23. The identification device according to claim 17, wherein said antimicrobial layer is ultraviolet curable.

24. The identification device according to claim 17, further comprising a radio frequency identification device.

25. The identification device according to claim 17, wherein the identification device is a wristband.

28. The method of claim 25, wherein positioning comprises applying the protective coating directly onto the face stock.

29. The method of claim 25, further comprising applying a thermal chemical imaging layer directly onto at least a portion of the face stock.

30. The method of claim 28, wherein positioning comprises applying the protective coating directly onto at least a portion of the thermal chemical imaging layer.

31. The method of claim 28, wherein imprinting comprises transferring the indicia on the thermal chemical imaging layer using a direct thermal printing process.

32. The method of claim 25, wherein applying comprises applying the antimicrobial coating using a flexographic printing press.

34. The method of claim 32, further applying a protective coating directly onto at least a portion of the thermal chemical imaging layer.

18. An identification device comprising:

a face stock;

a thermal chemical imaging layer applied to at least a portion of at least one surface of said face stock;

an antimicrobial coating positioned proximate to at least a portion of said thermal chemical imaging layer; and

indicia imprinted on said chemical layer using direct thermal printing.

26. A method of constructing an identification device comprising:

providing a face stock;

positioning a protective coating at least one of proximate or adjacent to at least a portion of at least one surface of the face stock;

applying an antimicrobial coating on at least a portion of the protective coating; and

imprinting indicia on or through at least a portion of the antimicrobial coating.

27. The method of Clam 25, wherein imprinting comprises printing said indicia directly on the antimicrobial coating using a thermal transfer printing process.

33. A method of constructing an identification device comprising:

providing a face stock;

applying a thermal chemical imaging layer on at least one surface of at least a portion of the face stock;

positioning an antimicrobial coating proximate to at least a portion of the thermal chemical imaging layer; and

printing indicia on at least a portion of the thermal chemical imaging layer using a direct thermal printing process.

35. The method of claim 33, wherein positioning comprises applying the antimicrobial coating directly onto the thermal chemical imaging layer.
