2. A method of controlling a transmission rate of overhead data bits in a sequence of frames in digital subscriber line communications using multicarrier modulation, the method being characterized by:
selecting a variable number of overhead data bits for each frame in the frame sequence such that the number of overhead data bits for at least one frame in the sequence is different than the number of overhead data bits for at least one other frame in the sequence. - View Dependent Claims (3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 13, 14, 15, 16, 17)

A digital subscriber line transceiver using multicarrier modulation designed to transmit a sequence of frames over a communications channel and characterized in that the transceiver is designed to control a transmission rate of overhead data by selecting a variable number of overhead data bits for each frame in the frame sequence such that the number of overhead data bits for at least one frame in the frame sequence is different than the number of overhead data bits for at least one other frame in the frame sequence.

A digital subscriber line transceiver using multicarrier modulation designed to receive a sequence of frames over a communications channel and characterized in that the transceiver is designed to control a reception rate of overhead data by selecting a variable number of overhead data bits for each frame in the frame sequence such that the number of overhead data bits for at least one frame in the frame sequence is different than the number of overhead data bits for at least one other frame in the frame sequence.
