Abstract

The present invention relates to a system and method for identifying and tracking gaming objects and game states on a gaming table. Through the use of imaging devices and identity and positioning modules gaming objects are detected. An identity and positioning module identifies the value and position of cards on the gaming table. An intelligent position analysis and tracking (IPAT) module performs analysis of the identity and position data of cards and interprets them intelligently for the purpose of tracking game events, game states and general game progression. As a game progresses it changes states. A game tracking module processes data from the IPAT module and keeps track of game events and game states. Ambiguity resolution mechanisms such as backward tracking, forward tracking and multiple state tracking may be used in the process of game tracking. All events on the gaming table are recorded and stored on video and as data for reporting and analysis.

Claims

1. A method of tracking a gaming object on a gaming table, said method comprising obtaining a position profile for a gaming object and resolving said position profile on said gaming table.

2. The method of claim 1 wherein said position profile comprises a shape descriptor and said resolving comprises:

locating a first positioning feature of said shape descriptor;

interpolating a second positioning feature based on said first positioning feature; and

analyzing said first positioning feature and said second positioning feature in relation to said shape descriptor.

3. The method of claim 2, wherein said analyzing utilizes a points in contour test.

4. The method of claim 2, wherein said first positioning feature and said second positioning feature are convex corners, said convex corners utilized to determine if a playing card resides within said shape descriptor.

5. The method of claim 4 further comprising identifying convex corners as matched corners, thereby preventing said matched corners from being analyzed.

6. The method of claim 2 further comprising determining if said gaming object contains a playing card.

7. The method of claim 2 further comprising determining if an object other than a playing card, resides within said shape descriptor.

8. The method of claim 1 further comprising organizing cards into card hands defined by a plurality of playing cards on said gaming table, said organizing comprising:

determining a position profile for one or more of said playing cards;

selecting at least two cards from said playing cards;

identifying a card configuration defined by said at least two cards;

evaluating the validity of said card configuration according to a set of rules associated with the game being played; and

determining if said at least two cards belong in the same card hand based upon said evaluating.

9. The method of claim 8 further comprising establishing an order of selection of said plurality of playing cards.

10. The method of claim 9 wherein said establishing an order comprises ordering said plurality of playing cards by distance from a reference point.

11. The method of claim 8 further comprising rotating said position profile for the purpose of said evaluating.

12. The method of claim 1 further comprising partitioning a contour comprising overlapping card hands by:

detecting said contour; and

applying an erosion algorithm to said contour, whereby said contour is eroded into at least two contours.

13. The method of claim 1 further comprising performing an analysis of said gaming object by:

detecting an event in a vicinity of said gaming object according to said position profile; and

analyzing said gaming object based upon said event.

14. The method of claim 13 wherein said event comprises a presence of motion in the vicinity of said position profile.

15. The method of claim 13 wherein said event comprises detecting an object overlapping said position profile of said gaming object.

16. The method of claim 13 wherein said event comprises the presence of a skin colored object in the vicinity of said position profile in an overhead image of said gaming object.

43. The method of claim 1 wherein said method is embodied in computer instructions in a computer readable medium.

17. A method of tracking gaming objects on a gaming table comprising:

recording temporally sequential data relating to a plurality of said gaming objects;

determining an identity and a position profile of a tracked one of said gaming objects at a first instant in time from said data;

determining a position profile of an investigated one of said objects at a second instant in time from said data;

identifying a compatibility between said position profile of said investigated one and said position profile of said tracked one; and

assigning said identity to said investigated one of said objects according to said compatibility.

18. The method of claim 17 wherein said recording sequential data comprises recording top view images of said game table periodically.

19. The method of claim 17 wherein said tracked one of said objects is a playing card, and said position profile of said tracked one comprises a position of a boundary feature of said playing card.

20. The method of claim 17 further comprising utilizing multiple data frames within said sequential data for said determining an identity and a position profile.

21. The method of claim 17 further comprising utilizing multiple data frames within said sequential data for said identifying a compatibility.

44. The method of claim 17 wherein said method is embodied in computer instructions in a computer readable medium.

22. A system for tracking a gaming object on a gaming table, said system comprising means for obtaining a position profile for a gaming object and means for resolving said position profile on said gaming table.

23. The system of claim 22 wherein said position profile comprises a shape descriptor and said means for resolving comprises:

means for locating a first positioning feature of said shape descriptor;

means for interpolating a second positioning feature based on said first positioning feature; and

means for analyzing said first positioning feature and said second positioning feature in relation to said shape descriptor.

24. The system of claim 23, wherein said means for analyzing utilizes a points in contour test.

25. The system of claim 23, wherein said first position feature and said second positioning feature are convex corners, said convex corners utilized to determine if a playing card resides within said shape descriptor.

26. The system of claim 25 further comprising means for identifying convex corners as matched corners, thereby preventing said matched corners from being analyzed.

27. The system of claim 23 further comprising means for determining if said gaming object contains a playing card.

28. The system of claim 23 further comprising means for determining if an object other than a playing card, resides within said shape descriptor.

29. The system of claim 22 further comprising means for organizing cards into card hands defined by a plurality of playing cards on said gaming table, said means for organizing cards comprising;

means for determining a position profile for one or more of said playing cards;

means for selecting at least two cards from said playing cards;

means for identifying a card configuration defined by said at least two cards;

means for evaluating the validity of said card configuration according to a set of rules associated with the game being played; and

means for determining if said at least two cards belong in the same card hand based upon said evaluating.

30. The system of claim 29 further comprising means for establishing an order of selection of said plurality of playing cards.

31. The system of claim 30 wherein said means for establishing an order comprises means for ordering said plurality of playing cards by distance from a reference point.

32. The system of claim 29 further comprising means for rotating said position profile for the purpose of said evaluating.

33. The system of claim 22 further comprising means for partitioning a contour comprising overlapping card hands, said means for partitioning a contour comprising:

means for detecting said contour; and

means for applying an erosion algorithm to said contour, whereby said contour is eroded into at least two contours.

34. The system of claim 22 further comprising means for performing an analysis of said gaming object, said means for performing an analysis comprising:

means for detecting an event in a vicinity of said gaming object according to said position profile; and

means for analyzing said gaming object based upon said event.

35. The system of claim 34 wherein said event comprises a presence of motion in the vicinity of said position profile.

36. The system of claim 34 wherein said event comprises detecting an object overlapping said position profile of said gaming object.

37. The system of claim 34 wherein said event comprises the presence of a skin colored object in the vicinity of said position profile in an overhead image of said gaming object.

38. A system for tracking gaming objects on a gaming table comprising:

means for recording temporally sequential data relating to a plurality of said gaming objects;

means for determining an identity and a position profile of a tracked one of said gaming objects at a first instant in time from said data;

means for determining a position profile of an investigated one of said objects at a second instant in time from said data;

means for identifying a compatibility between said position profile of said investigated one and said position profile of said tracked one; and

means for assigning said identity to said investigated one of said objects according to said compatibility.

39. The system of claim 38 wherein said means for recording sequential data comprises means for recording top view images of said game table periodically.

40. The system of claim 38 wherein said tracked one of said objects is a playing card, and said position profile of said tracked one comprises a position of a boundary feature of said playing card.

41. The system of claim 38 further comprising means for utilizing multiple data frames within said sequential data for use by said means for determining an identity and a position profile.

42. The system of claim 38 further comprising means for utilizing multiple data frames within said sequential data for use by said means for identifying a compatibility.
