Abstract

A video display apparatus for displaying a catalogue of one or more candidate video items for replay, each video item being represented in the catalogue by a catalogue entry having at least one displayed representative image comprises a user control device operable to resize a displayed catalogue entry by a select-and-drag operation; and means responsive to a resizing of a catalogue entry to select a number of distinct representative images, for display in respect of that video item, so that the number displayed increases with increasing size of the catalogue entry while the display size of each representative image stays substantially constant with respect to changes in the catalogue entry size.

Claims

1. A video display apparatus for displaying a catalogue of one or more candidate video items for replay, each video item being represented in said catalogue by a catalogue entry having at least one displayed representative image;

said apparatus comprising;

a user control device operable to resize a displayed catalogue entry by a select-and-drag operation; and

means responsive to a resizing of a catalogue entry to select a number of distinct representative images, for display in respect of that video item, so that a number displayed increases with increasing size of said catalogue entry while a display size of each representative image stays substantially constant with respect to changes in said catalogue entry size.

2. A display apparatus according to claim 1, in which, where said catalogue entry has n representative images, where n is one or more, said n representative images are taken from respective predetermined temporal positions within a corresponding video item.

3. A display apparatus according to claim 2, in which, when n is two or more, said predetermined temporal positions are substantially equispaced with respect to said video item.

4. A display apparatus according to claim 1, in which said representative images comprise a ranked set of statistically significant images form within said video item.

5. A display apparatus according to claim 1, in which, when said catalogue entry is increased in size so as to accommodate another representative image, the previously displayed representative image(s) continue to be displayed.

6. A display apparatus according to claim 1, in which said user control is a mouse pointer control.

7. A display apparatus according to claim 1, in which each representative image provides a link operable to start video replay at a temporal position corresponding to that representative image.

8. A video display method for displaying a catalogue of one or more candidate video items for replay in an arrangement having a user control device operable to resize a displayed catalogue entry by a select-and-drag operation, each video item being represented in said catalogue by a catalogue entry having at least one displayed representative image;

said method comprising the step of;

selecting, in response to a resizing of a catalogue entry, a number of distinct representative images, for display in respect of that video item, so that a number displayed increases with increasing size of said catalogue entry while a display size of each representative image stays substantially constant with respect to changes in said catalogue entry size.

9. Computer software having program code for carrying out a method according to claim 8.
