Abstract

A particle detection system uses a reflective optic comprising a curved surface to detect high angle scattered light generated by a particle in a liquid medium, when a laser beam is incident on the particle. When the particles transit the laser beam, light is scattered in all directions and is described by MIE scattering theory for particles about the size of the wavelength of light and larger or Rayleigh Scattering when the particles are smaller than the wavelength of light. By using the reflective optic, the scattered light can be detected over angles that are greater than normally obtainable.

Claims

1. A system for detecting and identifying a particle in a liquid, the system comprising:

an optical axis;

a target zone, the optical axis intersecting the target zone;

a reflective optic comprising a curved reflecting surface, the reflective optic index coupled with a liquid medium in the target zone, the reflective optic configured to collect and reflect light scatter by particle in the liquid medium in the target zone;

a detector configured to detect the reflected light; and

a light source configured to generate a light beam and direct the light beam through the target zone.

2. The system of claim 1, wherein the reflective optic is a second surface curved mirror.

3. The system of claim 1, wherein the detector comprises a plurality of detectors.

4. The system of claim 3, wherein the plurality of detectors form a linear detector array.

5. The system of claim 3, wherein the plurality of detectors form a 2 dimensional array.

6. The system of claim 3, wherein the plurality of detectors form a Charge Coupled Device (CCD).

7. The system of claim 1, wherein the detector is a linear photo diode camera.

8. The system of claim 1, wherein the detector is a square array of photodiodes.

9. The system of claim 1, wherein the detector comprises an array of photodiodes arranged in segmented concentric circles.

10. The system of claim 1, further comprising a beam stop configured to deflect the light beam after it has passed through the target zone.

11. The system of claim 1, wherein the light beam is incident at an angle, and wherein the light beam is internally reflected by the interface of the liquid medium with the atmosphere eliminating the need for a beam stop to deflect the light beam after it has traveled through the target zone.

12. The system of claim 1, further comprising a plurality of light sources each configured to a produce a light beam, wherein at least some of the light beams are incident at an angel relative to the optical access.

13. The system of claim 12, wherein each of the plurality of light sources is switched on and off at a rate that is fast compared to the transit of the particle through the light beams.

14. The system of claim 1, wherein the reflective optic allows light scattered through an angel of 90°

to be captured by the detector.

15. A system for detecting and identifying a particle in a liquid, the system comprising:

an optical axis;

a flow cell comprising a target zone, the optical axis intersecting the target zone;

an interface optic;

a reflective optic comprising a curved reflecting surface, the reflective optic index coupled with a liquid medium in the target zone, the reflective optic configured to collect and reflect light scatter by particle in the liquid medium in the target zone;

a detector configured to detect the reflected light; and

a light source configured to generate a light beam and direct the light beam through the target zone.

16. The system of claim 15, further comprising a prism configured to direct the light beam through the target zone.

17. The system of claim 15, wherein the reflective optic comprises a non reflective area configured to allow the light beam to pass through the reflective optic.

18. The system of claim 15, wherein the interface optic is integral to the flowcell.

19. The system of claim 15, wherein the reflective optic is integral to the flowcell.

20. The system of claim 15, wherein the system of claim 15, wherein the detector comprises a 256-pixel detector packaged array.

21. The system of claim 20, wherein the detector further comprises signal conditioning amplifiers.

22. The system of claim 20, wherein the detector further comprises multiplex analog switches.

23. The system of claim 20, wherein the detector further comprises a 14-bit Analog to Digital Converter (ADC).

24. The system of claim 20, wherein the detector further comprises a microcontroller.

25. The system of claim 20, wherein the detector further comprises communications chip.

26. The system of claim 25, wherein the communications chip is a USB communications chip.
