Abstract

A multiple pipette assembly is used for the purpose of sample immobilization for surface plasmon resonance (SPR) assay, and dispenses and introduces sample fluid of a sample to a sensing surface of a sensor unit. The sensor unit includes a flow channel having first and second orifices, and the sensing surface, positioned in the flow channel, for detecting the reaction of the sample. First and second pipette devices access the orifices. First and second pumps are connected with respectively the pipette devices, for pressurization to dispense the sample fluid through the pipette devices, or for decompression to aspirate the sample fluid through the pipette devices. The pumps are driven in a manner independent from one another. While the first and second pipette devices move away from the sensor unit, the pumps are caused to decompress a space in the first and second pipette devices and the flow channel.

Claims

1. A fluid dispenser for dispensation and introduction of sample fluid to a sensing surface of a sensor unit including a flow channel having plural orifices, and said sensing surface positioned in said flow channel for detecting reaction of sample in said sample fluid, said fluid dispenser comprising:

a pipette device group, having plural pipette devices for accessing respectively said orifices;

plural pumps, connected respectively with said pipette devices, for pressurization to dispense said sample fluid through said pipette devices, or for decompression to aspirate said sample fluid through said pipette devices; and

a pump controller for driving said pumps in a manner independent from one another.

2. A fluid dispenser as defined in claim 1, further comprising a pressure sensor for detecting pipette inner pressure of each of said pipette devices, to output an electric signal;

wherein said pump controller controls said pumps according to said electric signal.

3. A fluid dispenser as defined in claim 2, further comprising a failure checking unit, responsive to said electric signal from said pressure sensors, for checking said pipette inner pressure of said pipette devices for failure according to said electric signal from a pressure sensor;

a treating unit for performing a predetermined treating process when failure is determined from at least one of said pipette devices.

A fluid dispenser as defined in claim 3, wherein while said sample fluid is in said flow channel, said pump controller causes a first one of said pipette devices to aspirate and a second one of said pipette devices to dispense in an alternate manner repeatedly, to create a flow in turbulence of said sample fluid in said flow channel.

5. A fluid dispenser as defined in claim 3, wherein said treating process is a fail-safe interrupt process to cause said pump controller to stop said pumps, and to stop dispensation to said flow channel from said pipette device group.

6. A fluid dispenser as defined in claim 5, wherein said flow channel in said sensor unit is constituted by plural flow channels, and said pipette device group is constituted by plural pipette device groups associated with respectively said flow channels.

7. A fluid dispenser as defined in claim 6, wherein said treating unit performs said interrupt process for one of said plural pipette device groups having a pipette device of which failure is detected by said failure checking unit.

8. A fluid dispenser as defined in claim 6, further comprising an alarm signal generator, responsive to detection of failure in said failure checking unit, for generating a signal of occurrence of failure in said pipette inner pressure of one of said pipette devices.

9. A fluid dispenser as defined in claim 6, further comprising an input device for inputting a restart command signal to said treating unit to terminate said interrupt process;

wherein said treating unit continues said interrupt process until said restart command signal is input.

10. A fluid dispenser as defined in claim 6, wherein after entry of said interrupt process, said treating unit removes failure in said pipette inner pressure for recovery, and then terminates said interrupt process.

11. A fluid dispenser as defined in claim 2, wherein while said plural pipette devices move away from said sensor unit, said pump controller causes said pumps to decompress a space in said plural pipette devices and said flow channel.

12. A fluid dispenser as defined in claim 3, wherein said treating unit records history information of history of occurrence of said failure.

13. A fluid dispensing method of dispensation and introduction of sample fluid of a sample to a sensing surface for assay of reaction of said sample, wherein a flow channel is positioned with said sensing surface disposed therein, and has plural orifices, said fluid dispensing method comprising steps of:

setting one of plural pipette devices in each of said orifices, for dispensing said sample fluid through at least a first one of said pipette devices, and for aspirating air or fluid through at least a second one of said pipette devices, to introduce said sample fluid to said sensing surface; and

causing said plural pipette devices to aspirate to decompress a space in said plural pipette devices and said flow channel, said plural pipette devices being caused to move away from said sensor unit while said plural pipette devices aspirate.

14. A fluid dispensing method as defined in claim 13, further comprising a step of detecting pipette inner pressure of each of said pipette devices by use of a pressure sensor, to output an electric signal;

wherein according to said electric signal, dispensation of said sample fluid is controlled, and aspiration of air or fluid in said flow channel is controlled.

15. A fluid dispensing method as defined in claim 13, wherein pressure of said aspiration of air or fluid in said flow channel is set higher than pressure of said dispensation of said sample fluid, to keep a decompressed state in said flow channel during a flow of said sample fluid.

A fluid dispensing method as defined in claim 15, wherein while said sample fluid is in said flow channel, a first one of said pipette devices is caused to aspirate and a second one of said pipette devices is caused to dispense in an alternate manner repeatedly, to create a flow in turbulence of said sample fluid in said flow channel.

17. A fluid dispensing method as defined in claim 16, wherein said pipette inner pressure of said pipette devices is checked for failure according to said electric signal from a pressure sensor;

a predetermined treating process is performed when failure is determined from at least one of said pipette devices.

An assay apparatus for assay in utilizing attenuated total reflection by use of a sensor unit, said sensor unit including a flow channel having plural orifices, and a dielectric medium, positioned on said flow channel, and overlaid with a thin film for detecting reaction of sample in sample fluid within said flow channel, said assay apparatus including a light source for applying illuminating light to said sensor unit in a form to satisfy a total reflection condition, and a photo detector for detecting said illuminating light reflected by said sensor unit, to output an electric signal by conversion, said assay apparatus comprising:

a pipette device group, having plural pipette devices for accessing respectively said orifices;

plural pumps, connected with respectively said pipette devices, for pressurization to dispense said sample fluid through said pipette devices, or for decompression to aspirate said sample fluid through said pipette devices; and

a pump controller for driving said pumps in a manner independent from one another.

A fluid dispenser for dispensation and introduction of a sample to a sensing surface in a sensor unit, wherein said sensor unit includes a flow channel with first and second orifices, and said sensing surface positioned inside said flow channel for detecting reaction of said sample, said fluid dispenser comprising:

a pipette device group, having first and second pipette devices for being set at respectively said first and second orifices;

a dispensing pump for causing said first pipette device to dispense said sample;

an aspirating pump for causing said second pipette device to aspirate said sample; and

a speed controller for controlling speeds of said dispensing and aspirating pumps to cancel a finite difference between a dispensing flow rate and an aspirating flow rate, said dispensing flow rate being associated with said first pipette device and said dispensing pump and per unit time, and said aspirating flow rate being associated with said second pipette device and said aspirating pump and per unit time.

20. A fluid dispenser as defined in claim 19, wherein said speed controller includes:

a memory for storing information of a corrected speed of at least one of said dispensing and aspirating pumps, to cancel a finite difference between said dispensing flow rate and said aspirating flow rate; and

a pump driver for driving said dispensing and aspirating pumps according to said corrected speed.

21. A fluid dispenser as defined in claim 19, wherein said pipette device group is constituted by plural pipette device groups;

further comprising;

a memory for storing information of a corrected speed of said aspirating pump for each of said plural pipette device groups, to cancel a finite difference between said dispensing flow rate and said aspirating flow rate; and

a pump driver for driving said aspirating pump according to said corrected speed.

An assay apparatus for assay in utilizing attenuated total reflection, in which a sensor unit is used and includes a flow channel with first and second orifices, and a sensing surface positioned inside said flow channel, having a thin film, for detecting reaction of a sample, said assay apparatus comprising:

a fluid dispenser for dispensation and introduction of said sample to said sensing surface, and including;

(A) a pipette device group, having first and second pipette devices for being set at respectively said first and second orifices;

(B) a dispensing pump for causing said first pipette device to dispense said sample;

(C) an aspirating pump for causing said second pipette device to aspirate said sample;

(D) a speed controller for controlling speeds of said dispensing and aspirating pumps to cancel a finite difference between a dispensing flow rate and an aspirating flow rate, said dispensing flow rate being associated with said first pipette device and said dispensing pump and per unit time, and said aspirating flow rate being associated with said second pipette device and said aspirating pump and per unit time; and

a light source for emitting illuminating light toward said thin film; and

a photo detector for detecting said illuminating light reflected by said thin film.

A fluid dispensing method of dispensing a sample to a sensing surface in a sensor unit, wherein said sensor unit includes a flow channel with first and second orifices, and said sensing surface positioned inside said flow channel for detecting reaction of said sample, said fluid dispensing method comprising steps of:

setting first and second pipette devices at respectively said first and second orifices, said first and second pipette devices constituting a pipette device group; and

controlling speeds of dispensing and aspirating pumps to cancel a finite difference between a dispensing flow rate and an aspirating flow rate, said dispensing flow rate being associated with said first pipette device and said dispensing pump and per unit time, and said aspirating flow rate being associated with said second pipette device and said aspirating pump and per unit time.
